Maybe 3 or 4, hiding behind the couch as Dad watched a Star Trek TOS re-run on Channel 11. "Silicon-based life" that could go through cave walls like butter freaked me tf out. Funny that fictional silicon-based life (or is it? 👀) has become the stuff of 2026 nightmares.

Depends. Not 100% over the recharge rate on that particular geology. But the soil moisture from last year going into probable drought gives them a bit of a cushion Inshallah.

Yes and...spent my weekend making fundraising pitches for charity putting solar-powered water systems in Zimbabwean villages previously without water access. The most vulnerable people, who didn't cause the problem, are the ones who will suffer drought, floods, crop failures, famine.

I don't think they'd feel better after hearing Huang getting glazed by Ezra Klein before reassuring that he plans to do a lot more harm before anyone benefits. If I were Nvidia's PR I'd have died on the spot after hearing this.
If you want to turn a corner on climate change, if you want a future that’s sustainable, lean into A.I. It is the best opportunity we have to get there.

But we need to build the energy faster to do that.

That’s right. That’s right. I mean, that’s just life, you know?

There’s a market for it all. But you can subsidize it, and you can make it easier to build.

Yeah. It’s kind of like, in order to save you, they’ve got to hurt you first — that’s the nature of surgery. They’ve got to cut you open to save you. They’ve got to inflict an enormous amount of pain and suffering on you so that they can save you. And so I think A.I.’s kind of like that.

Tell me again why the Irish football manager and Eurovision-boycotting-culture Irish culture mavens are being hysterical? Tyrants, not generally famous for self-discipline, always tell you what they fear most. www.theguardian.com/film/2026/se...
The Israeli prime minister said he would seek new laws allowing the country to strip citizenship from people who “smear” Israeli soldiers and “defame” the state of Israel. Alongside the announcement, dozens of rightwing activists gathered outside Szor’s parents’ home.

Police and border police officers were deployed at the scene. One protester called for the “death penalty for traitors” and demanded that the homes of the film-makers’ families be demolished.

Speaking on Thursday, Abraham and Szor said: “We made this film out of a sense of obligation to use our position as Israelis to examine the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians for which our country is responsible.

“The threats from the Israeli government to revoke our citizenship and the death threats do not change that and will not stop the film. We thank our colleagues for the solidarity and look forward to sharing NAZA all over the world very soon.”

Last week, 43 local human rights organisations issued a joint statement urging Israeli authorities to stop what they described as incitement and threats against the film-makers, and not to prosecute either them or their sources.

More than 1,500 Israeli film-makers have also signed a petition defending “freedom of expression and creation” and expressing solidarity with Szor and Abraham.

Their sentiments have been echoed by a number of leading film-makers around the world, including Ken Loach, Joshua Oppenheimer, Paul Laverty, Laura Poitras, Nan Goldin, Richard Eyre and Hanif Kureishi. Oppenheimer, the US director of Oscar-nominated documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, said, “The Israeli government is waging a full-scale intimidation campaign against film directors. I am appalled and enraged.”

We are severely under-reacting to what is going to unfold over the next 100 days.
Donald Trump instigated a war against America’s democracy on January 6, 2021. He and his Republican allies would have crippled America’s democracy that day had his own vice president not refused to be party to the gravest constitutional offense a president can commit—the refusal to relinquish and peacefully transfer the power of the presidency to his duly elected successor.

Today, almost six years later, Donald Trump and his Republican congressional allies are even more determined to prosecute the president’s war against American democracy to its catastrophic end than they were on January 6, 2021.That catastrophic end could well come on January 3, 2027, when Trump and his Republican congressional allies wage the final battle in Trump’s determined war to corrupt America’s democracy and deliver a lasting political victory over the Democrats for his MAGA Republican Party.

Trump and his Republican allies have been preparing for this final battle since January 6, 2021. For the past six years, they have embarrassed themselves and the U.S. with their preposterous, win-at-any-cost denial that Trump lost the 2020 presidential election and their deceitful slander of America’s democracy. Since his return to the White House, Trump’s every unconstitutional act in his effort to seize control over the midterm elections—each hailed by his prostrate Republican Congress—has been toward the end of ensuring that Republicans retain a majority in the 120th Congress.

Well, at least the AfD local yokels in Saxony seem too racist to actually pull off a coalition
But shortly after its election victory in Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD also turned its fire on the BSW. Appearing on the far-right online channel Compact TV, AfD parliamentary group leader Oliver Kirchner referred to BSW politician Fabio De Masi as a "half-Italian." He went on to suggest that the BSW could not be relied upon if problems were ever to arise within a governing partnership.

Very keen to get a @kateraworth.bsky.social take on this.
Laying out a headline proposal on inflation control, the motion reads: “Interest rates will not be used as the primary tool for managing inflation, and as a result are likely to be significantly lower on average in the long run. Price stability will instead be maintained through the active shaping of markets”.

It then lays out five alternative levers of inflation control to replace interest rates: price controls (“of systematically significant prices”), “buffer stocks of critical commodities”, “strategic taxation to release resources”, credit regulation and strategic public investment.

Members of the policy working group blame “Treasury brain thinking” for Britain’s economic malaise and believe that the Labour government has also fallen prey to this despite a change of prime minister and chancellor earlier this year. The motion focuses particularly on the party’s approach to fiscal and monetary policy. One figure on the working group said this would radically distinguish the Greens’ economic policy from that of the Labour Party. They told the NS that the purpose of the motion was to provide Green politicians with straightforward answers when they are asked: “how are you going to pay for your plans?” The NS understands that motion C05 is backed by the party leadership.

The motion includes a range of other radical commitments. If passed, it would oblige a Green government to drop Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of economic policy success because the widely used measure of total monetary value “does not distinguish between socially beneficial production and activity that is environmentally destructive, socially harmful or economically wasteful.”

C05 also recommends “progressively restricting resource use in sectors that generate pollution, ecological degradation or socially harmful outcomes”.

Guess Tom Watson and Wes Streeting were using the same consultants as these jamokes *still* telling Democrats not to go hard vs AI data centres. It doesn't take a genius to ask for a sec who consultant clients might be off-cycle. www.politico.com/news/2026/09...
Democratic consultants are privately encouraging their battleground candidates to avoid talking about artificial intelligence regulations out of fear that powerful tech groups will unleash a tidal wave of spending against them ahead of November.
That guidance came from strategists in three separate top-tier House races, according to people involved in those races, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal conversations. And it follows a surge in AI panic on Capitol Hill as industry leaders warn about existential threats posed by their rapidly developing technology.
