#RiceU Ph.D. student, Kelsey Murphy, is mapping the future of the #MississippiRiver by decoding its past. Using climate models and centuries of data, her work delivers the evidence needed to safeguard the region in an uncertain #climate. Read more: tinyurl.com/mpm7d6u3
A geological map of the US interior and Gulf Coast is the background. The slide focuses on Kelsey Murphy, and the title reads: "Rice Graduate Student Dr. Kelsey Murphy Maps the Mississippi River's Uncertain Future. The background shows a section of river. The text introduces the critical role of the Mississippi River and the uncertainty of its future due to extreme climate conditions, which threaten communities and the economy. It concludes by stating that Dr. Kelsey Murphy is addressing this high-stakes problem. The background is a photo Kelsey Murphy with her research poster. The text details Murphy's research methods. It explains she uses 1,000 years of climate model simulations to investigate flow changes and forecast the basin's response to greenhouse gases and human land-use changes

The background is a section of river. The overlaying text summarizes Murphy's findings: greenhouse gases tend to dry the basin while land-use changes increase flood risk, and the river's future is heterogeneous across its tributaries.

Picture of Ainsley with other eeps students in a rock potholeQ:What was your favorite non-academic activity during your time at Rice? A: I enjoyed being part of the performing arts scene!
