When relatives answer on someone else’s behalf, men’s earnings are reported too low. In Mexico, this makes the measured gender wage gap 25% narrower.

The latest paper I accepted at the JDE: many surveys let another household member report a worker's earnings when the worker isn't home. @ricardoestradam.bsky.social , Goyheix & @marialombardi.bsky.social measure what that proxy reporting does. 🧵
