This is Nancy Faeser, the current German minister of the interior. The sign reads: "I hate freedom of opinion" She literally had a journalist (David Bendels) arrested and incarcerated for posting this! Am I the only one who notices the irony...? Germany on the move to GDR 2.0.

Today, Germany took another step toward GDR 2.0, which was the reason why I opted for this theme for my thread, as I anticipated this development! The AfD was "officially" labeled "right wing extremist" by the German "constitutional police" a quasi STASI 2.0 organization under the interior ministry.

Angela Merkel went on to make her Abitur in the GDR, comparable to the British O-levels and the prerequisite to university studies. However, in the GDR one also had to be a Communist party member in order to be invited to study in Moscow, which Angela clearly was (little known omission in her CV)...

Angela Merkel was born in the Uckermark in the GDR. Interestingly, her family immigrated into the GDR while millions fled the country! Her father was a Lutheran pastor, a job frowned upon by the Communist party. The young Angela went on to become a party functionary in the FDJ ("Free German Youth")

this day 1 December 1964 in GDR history, a mandatory minimum exchange fee was introduced for GDR visitors from the non-socialist countries - unofficially called "entrance fee". Citizens of West Germany had to exchange 25 Marks at a rate of 1:1 with non-transferable Eastern Marks.

Nov 30. 1984 in GDR history: Removal of the last automatic self-firing guns from the wall. Due to contractual obligations with West Germany - the GDR had agreed to remove these diabolic instruments from its border fence. About 55,000 such as the SM70 "Toetungsautomaten" (Killing automata) existed.

In contrast to West Germany, the GDR hosted annual military parades and in typical communist fashion, large-scale propaganda marches not dissimilar to the USSR. These were not limited to military either, the FDJ (communist youth organization) would be a regular participant with their blue shirts

A very specific tool of GDR propaganda was a magazine published in the early 1950ies: "USA in Wort und Bild" This magazine depicted specific US topics from the time. Topics that some may find very relatable still today. "The witch's kitchen in the Pentagon" or poor blacks shining shoes in NYC

Another form of popular propaganda in the GDR were posters and billboards, especially in the 50ies and 60ies. When analyzing the theme and tone of state propaganda the aims, but also the fears of the respective state become very evident. Not dissimilar to propaganda in the US(West) today.

The GDR felt a need to create a "counter narrative" to western media influence. The most widely known element of this, was: "Der Schwarze Kanal" (The black Channel) by Karl Eduard von Schnitzler who was a communist hardliner and propaganda talking head. He tried in vain to counter western influence.

The GDR faced a unique threat from a media message control point of view: Roughly 90% of the GDR territory was in broadcasting reach of western media and broadcasters. This gave GDR citizens the ability to access alternative information sources. Listening to western media was VERBOTEN by law!

Propaganda was the mainstay of SED soft power, while the STASI represented it's kinetic and lawfare power. The main weapons in the propaganda arsenal were the "Neues Deutschland" newspaper and the "Aktuelle Kamera" TV "news" - very much like our current fake news providing the pro-state narrative.

In the GDR, Thanksgiving was also celebrated as "Ernte Dankfest" (The feast to give thanks for the harvest) This was done on the first Sunday of October. The celebration in the GDR however was for the so called "land reform", which was the moment the free farmers were forcibly collectivized...

This day Nov 28. 1957 in GDR history: Pastor Siegfried Schmutzler is sentenced to 5 years in prison for criticizing the regime and encouraging his students to question the decisions of the regime and the propaganda that was presented to the GDR population. He would serve 3 of the 5 years.

Officially there was no racism in the GDR, which is interesting, when one considers that modern western Socialists are desperate to create race tensions to exploit in their attempt at power grab. In 1975, a single incident involving Algerian temporary workers was registered by the Stasi in Erfurt.
