For reference:

An image showing Mercator's map projection of Greenland over top of the continent of Africa, side by side with an actual-size Greenland overlaid on Africa, showing that Mercator hugely distorts and inflates the size of Greenland (roughly 13-14 times bigger than actual size) to maintain accurate landmass shape. The actual size size overlaid on Africa shows it is much smaller in real landmass.

Another visual showing a Mercator projection of Greenland, which distorts size more and more for landmasses near the poles in order to maintain more accurate landmass shape, while a pink Greenland overlaid on the USA shows it is less than a quarter of the size of the USA (including Alaska, the USA is 4.2x bigger).

Summary: Mercator is trash. The only reason it was so popular is that it could be used effectively for naval navigation (though even there it sacrificed more efficient distance routes to prioritize just getting to whatever destination with less math involved)

I was about age 5 or 6 when they screened this at my elementary school, and I remember in that moment going "I've seen this before!" because I saw it at Expo '86, when I was roughly a year old. I still have hazy memories of Expo 86' - the strongest is of seeing an IMAX doc with geese and beavers.
