the Rhône Valley Rogues just passed 700 subscribers on YouTube. That's a huge milestone for us, given that we were just at 666 shortly before our recent song release. Glad to see the v-kei tagged shorts getting views too, not just the koto tunings Our sincerest thanks to everyone who has subscribed!

Ashes And Brine was the first song we wrote after my move back to the United States from Japan. It was also our first time adding significant effects to the koto. We were trying to make it sound like some of the guitar from Disintegration-era The Cure. #koto #gothicrock #箏 #琴

Koto play-along with the bridge of Ashes And Brine. I spent a long time dialing in the synth sounds to get something that sounded like the sea without using samples of wind and waves. Then, when I sent the vocals and koto over to David, he added yet another layer to the rhythm with the accent on the drums. And it became one of my favorite sections of any song we've worked on.

000

Rhône Valley Rogues @rhonevalleyrogues.bsky.social · 08/03/2026

In this case, the koto is playing eighth notes in groups of 5-5-6 over eight quarter notes (just two measures in basic 4/4 time.) It's deceptively simple but gives the whole verse an off-balance feel that I love.

Rhône Valley Rogues @rhonevalleyrogues.bsky.social · 08/03/2026

There are moments on those albums where they use unusual accents and layered time signatures to create these off-kilter sounding parts that I can't really tap my foot to at first, so I have to stop trying to grasp hold of the rhythm and just allow myself to get lost in the music.

Rhône Valley Rogues @rhonevalleyrogues.bsky.social · 08/03/2026
