Hey, somebody got Hexen in my Heretic! ... Tasty! Today, I'm playing through the Faithless trilogy. This time, I'm doing it all vanilla. I really wanted to go through with Walpurgis, but Faithless' custom monsters, weapons, and items didn't get along with it. #Doom #DoomMod #Heretic #Faithless

Anybody who knows me well enough knows I like Hexen way more than Heretic. I love the hub system, I love the player classes, I love the enemy and item variety... I know it's not the greatest game, and it's certainly not as good as Heretic... but I like it more, so there.
So having a mod for Heretic that introduces some of these elements in a fun way tickles that part of my brain that wants an FPS RPG action adventure game!
I particularly love the hub system. Just like Hexen, really! Each chapter of the Faithless trilogy is basically a single big level with all 9 maps accessible via unlockable portals. Episode 1 Faithless contains the entirety of E1M1 through E1M9, Episode 2 Merciless is E2M1 through E2M9, and Episode 3 Soulless is E3M1 through E3M9. Plus I'm told there's a super-secret level hidden somewhere among them!
I wanted to take a moment to admire the view from E1's hub, the docks of Port Mercy. It's Heretic, so you have to start the game at the docks. It's a rule!

If there's one thing Heretic did better than Doom, it's the Chainsaw. The Gauntlets of the Necromancer just feel more powerful than Doom 2's Chainsaw for some reason, and seem to stun enemies more often. Damn near feels as flawlessly perfect as Doom 64's Chainsaw. WHICH IS THE BEST CHAINSAW IN DOOM, FIGHT ME.
Plus, slap a Tome of Power on these sumbitches, and now you leech health. Stun-chance failed? Doesn't matter, you're healing anyway!
I mentioned in a previous post I'm disappointed by Heretic's arsenal since some of the weapons are too similar to Doom's, but that kind of doesn't do it justice, because Heretic's weapons are honestly GREAT. Stand-out favorites include the Gauntlets here, as well as the Ethereal Crossbow, and the Hell Staff.

For those whom tried Hexen and didn't like it for all of the labyrinthine maps and obtuse switch-hunting, and much prefer Heretic's level design over it, I've got good news for you. Faithless' level design is SIGNIFICANTLY LESS labyrinthine, and the switch-hunting is honestly a lot better. I still like Hexen more, but just Episode 1 alone is so much better designed that it kind of hurts to admit. Though, I will say many of the secrets are much harder to find.
I'm honestly pretty bad at finding secrets in most Doom Clones ( these days referred to as Boomer Shooters ). Doom, Heretic, Duke Nukem, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Ion Fury, Amid Evil, you name it. I've never found 100% of secrets in ANY of these games, their expansions, OR any fan-made megawads. Seriously, I'm terrible at finding secrets. I had to look up how to find the secret level here because I was searching for a good two hours before giving up and opening the Walkthrough file the mod's creator so graciously provided.

Decided to do something I don't do often. Take some mods into Heretic. I like Heretic! I just don't like it as much as Doom and Hexen. So I took Walpurgis into Heretic, and I chose to play as each class. #UZDoom #Doom #Heretic #Hexen #Walpurgis #DoomMod

Walpurgis is essentially a Hexen Enhanced Vanilla type of mod that greatly expands upon the three default classes, as well as adds a fourth class with just as much depth. It's compatible not just with Hexen, but also Doom and Heretic. I know a lot of folks prepare Wrath of Cronos for Hexen, but I personally prefer Walpurgis. I also have a certain fondness for Hex Arcana and XRPG. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Wrath of Cronos, and one day I'll get around to that one here, but I just... vastly prefer this over it! That's all.

As discussed previously, Walpurgis adds an extra player class to the game. Illitheya the Druid. I've always loved Druids in most role playing games. Being able to transform into and/or summon animals has always been fun to me, and I crave more of it in more games. One of the Druid's weapons here is a magic charm that transforms her into a big-ass fuck-off werewolf with ice magic. Why ice magic? Why the hell not? It's fun!
You've got a water dragon staff, a serpent venom staff, and a bramble thorn staff as well. The werewolf and bramble staff are my two favorites. Best part is, in the mod's settings, you can choose whether you want one weapon from each category, both, or one chosen at random! So you can take all four if you want! And that's not including your starter weapon and ultimate weapon!

I chose to go through episode 3 with the Druid, but I went through episode 1 with Baratus the Fighter ( renamed Baratus the Myrmidon here in Walpurgis ) and episode 2 with Daedalon the Mage ( renamed Daedalon the Magistrate here in Walpurgis ), but... I forgot to bind the key for screenshots, so I'd been taking screenshots of fucking NOTHING for the entirety of these first two episodes.
I'll be going through episode 4 with Parias the Cleric ( renamed Parias the Crusader here in Walpurgis ), and... well, I want to give you some screenshots of the others as well, so maybe I'll just start up the first couple maps in those episodes with those guys...

I was going to celebrate Doom 2016's 10th anniversary by playing the game again... but as much as I love it, I HATE the Rune Trials. So instead, I took Embers of Armageddon into the Hell On Earth Starter Pack with Nash Gore NEXT. #Doom #Doom2016 #DoomMod #UZDoom #Gaming

I wanted to take a snapshot of exploding a ton of monsters with a rocket launcher blast, but I think my FOV settings are a bit off for taking screenshots. It doesn't look this bad to me when I actually play the game.

My biggest complaint about Embers of Armageddon is that you can't change the weapon position like you can in Doom 2016. I prefer the center view for the guns in Doom 2016, but I can't do that here. It just feels... off to me. I don't want no stinkin' REALISM in my vidya gaemz!!

Embers of Armageddon will go out of its way to randomly place things like Praetor Tokens, Argent Cells, and Weapon Drones throughout every map. They'll never be in the same place twice, from my experience in other map packs, so it's always fun to find them.

Super unrelated, but I baked kaiser rolls from scratch for the first time today! They came out really good! Oh yeah, btw, I know how to cook and bake.

Got a stand mixer for a holiday gift last year, and I love it to pieces. I've been using it to make all sorts of breads and pizzas and calzones and stuff.

I'm impressed by how much these look like the kind of kaiser rolls you'd get at a real bakery. Making the knots for them was easier than I thought it would be.

You know, I tend to play mods for Doom 2 almost exclusively these days. That's probably because most mods these days are geared towards Doom 2. It has more monsters, weapons, textures, and an ongoing campaign as opposed to separate episodes, it just feels way bigger and more complex. And for the most part, it is. But there's just something... cozy, for lack of a better word, about the original Doom. The beauty of its simplicity is lost on me sometimes in my search for something "more." Going back to make an "enhanced vanilla" experience of The Ultimate Doom like this... I feel humbled. I needed this, I think.

I loaded Doom Comic 96 up with Doom 2 In Doom, which adds Doom 2's monsters and the Super Shotgun to the original Ultimate Doom. I absolutely love mods like this. Like I said, most of the time, I play Doom 2, and sometimes it can be nice to go back to the simplicity of Doom 1 every now and again, but whenever I do, I feel like something's missing. That's why I find mods like this so satisfying. Simple, but satisfying.

Doom Comic 96 is basically complete, according to the creator, Ramirov. They based it on the one-shot Doom comic book published by Marvel Comics back in 1996. This comic is famous for making Doomguy seem like an unhinged lunatic, and it shows. I always get heavy Ash Williams vibes whenever I play this mod.
The mod comes with a Palette texture pack that gives the entire game a super crunchy look that somewhat resembles ink sketches. It doesn't work for most map packs with custom textures, but anything with vanilla Doom and Doom 2 textures works perfectly. DEFINITELY worth a look, in my opinion. I understand this kind of aesthetic might not be everyone's cup of tea, some folks might consider it "messy," I suppose. But I love it.

Word of warning with Doom 2 In Doom. There's a good chance that the two Barons of Hell in Phobos Anomaly will be replaced with a pair of Archviles. Which is great, it makes for a fun fight with all the Spectres in the arena. But, it also breaks the map. The walls won't lower because Barons weren't killed, meaning you're gonna hafta noclip through the walls to reach the level exit.
Small price to pay for such a fun fight. I definitely recommend this combination of mods regardless. I think I'll take these mods into Double Impact after I finish a full playthrough of the base game.

Decided to keep things simple today. By which, I mean brutal. I found a fork of Meatgrinder called Opti-BRUTAL DOOM. Basically, it's a lightweight version of Brutal Doom v22. Which is good for me, since I'm running out of hard drive space. JOY! #Doom #DoomMod #BrutalDoom #Gaming

I was apprehensive of Brutal Doom at first, but once I gave it a chance, I wound up really liking it. Personally, to me, I still feel like it gives "teenage edgelord" vibes, but it's so fun, I feel like that's more a minor nitpick than an actual, legitimate complaint.
I think my personal favorite part is just out LOUD the SSG here is. To quote Ben "Yahtzee" Crowshaw from Second Wind ( back when he worked for The Escapist on Zero Punctuation ), "[it] sounds like God slamming his car door."

I will say, however, I'm not the biggest fan of any mod that adds reloading to the Plasma Rifle. Call me old fashioned, but I feel like that's one of two weapons that should NEVER have a reloading mechanic. Pistols, rifles, and shotguns? Fine, whatever. But a high tech fancy laser rifle of any sort? No.
That said, this one's at least unobtrusive with how big the magazine size it.

I'm also not a fan of any mod that adds reloading to the Chaingun. In my mind that is the number one weapon that should NEVER have reloading.
MOST FORTUNATELY, no such awfulness has corrupted by beautiful bullet-blasting baby here.
I've always loved the Doom 64 Chaingun's aesthetic with the muzzle holes all over every barrel, so seeing that here gives me the happy brain chemicals.
My only complaint is I want a higher maximum bullet capacity. I tend to lay into the trigger in this one a bit, so I burn through my bullets pretty quickly.

Normally, I like to load mods up together with Nash Gore NEXT, but this one comes with its own gore! Not to mention modified monsters that are ALL gibbable. Again, call me old-fashioned, but I think the Super Shotgun should be able to gib almost any monster you kill with it.
And sometimes I just have to sit still and appreciate the gore.
... I think there's a switch I need to hit somewhere under all this ketchup.

I love Xim's Star Wars mod, but I do have one MAJOR problem with it.
There are too many guns.
Which you'd THINK would be a good thing, right? I mean, this is Doom after all, more is better, right?
Well, the problem is there's about five different guns for each ammo type in the game. So what inevitably winds up happening is you'll wind up scrolling through a huge list of guns for the ONE gun you actually have ammo for. "What about hotkeys?" Doesn't really help all that much when your hotkey has four to six guns for you to scroll through. And depending on the map pack you're playing through, you might have nothing but guns for one type of ammo and burn through all of that ammo in the first couple of levels.
You can go into the options to choose which weapon spawn gives you which weapon you want, but it doesn't stop enemies from dropping OTHER guns when slain, so even if you go into the options and rig it so SSG spawns give you the Wookie Bowcaster, various enemies will drop all the OTHER SSG replacers.

For what it's worth, most of the guns feel really good to use... for the most part.
A lot of the guns have a pretty big spread, even for their weapon class. I'd totally expect a fully automatic rifle like this to have a wide spread, and I'd totally expect a sniper rifle to have perfect accuracy, but there is NO in-between with any of the other guns, really.
You really feel like a Stormtrooper... unable to hit anything.

Not to mention the enemies are weirdly accurate with their attacks.
You can choose what kinds of enemies you go up against, but since these Star Wars enemies are all generally a lot harder to deal with than the vanilla Doom roster, they could make a map pack INSANELY hard if you get just one too many of the wrong monster.
I chose to have Darth Vader replace the Archvile. I am never taking Xim's Star Wars into Valiant for that reason. I do not want to deal with "13 Angry Darth Vaders."

Twin hand blasters make up for a lot of this mod's shortcomings, honestly.
Not to mention you get a variety of character classes, ranging from Jedi to Smugglers, to Troopers, and Mandalorians. Each one comes with an array of special abilities and powers that make them unique in addition to whatever guns you collect.
So far I like playing as the Mandalorian the most. Playing as a Jedi is a ton of fun, especially since you can choose the color of your lightsaber, but you've gotta be GOOD at the lightsaber combat for it to be viable, and the right map pack can make it borderline impossible.
Not to mention, it seems to be almost impossible to defeat the Icon of Sin replacement boss fights as a Jedi, whereas guns have no trouble killing the final boss replacements...

First up, we've got the Super Star Wars trilogy on the SNES. I grew up playing these games a lot back in the 90s, though the only one I ever managed to beat without using cheat codes was Return of the Jedi.

I have both Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic 2 on my Switch, but I haven't played either of them. Haven't had the time until recently, really.

Sadly, I do not have Dark Forces, or Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. I do have the next two games in the series, however!

I haven't finished this game yet either, unfortunately. When I got to the final level, the final door leading to the final boss was locked. After doing everything I needed to do to unlock the door... it was still locked. Bugged. Still pissed off, because I was LOVING the game until then. I'm hoping a second playthrough will not yield the same results.

Look, I know Alt Text is SUPPOSED to describe the image, but I like using it for ranting more.
So I've got two major builds for this character right now. One is a high health/defense brawler build with this giant, flaming mace. I haven't been focusing on my physical stats as much as I should have for it, though. The Flameweaver, by default, is a very Battlemage-y sort of class. Y'know, an all-rounder type. I wound up focusing almost exclusively on magic for the longest time because HAHAHA fireball go BOOM!!
Yes, in D&D I am 100% the Wizard who says "I didn't ask how big the room is, I said 'I cast Fireball!'"

Don't you hate it when you hit an enemy with your strongest attack and they somehow survive with just 1HP?
Most people use a resourceless, free attack to finish them off.
I choose the waste the same resources because I doubled my total resources with my second build setup. With ammo like this, who's going to argue? No one, that's who!

Okay so... there was this big fight with earth burrowing worms and poison-spewing zombies coming out of the ground guarding this treasure chest, but I sorta forgot to take the picture during the fight so... uh... let's pretend this picture's way cooler than it is, huh?

Well that didn't last long. I ran into a softlock bug in the Tome Mistress Marionette boss fight. Reducing the boss' health to 0 renders them inert. The fight doesn't end or anything. I'm just trapped in an endless boss fight where I can't even die. #Mandragora #Gaming

I've got absolutely no idea what to do. I've tried everything I can think of. I tried pausing the game and returning to the main menu to reload my save, but that doesn't change anything, it just starts the fight over from the beginning. I've tried deliberately dying, but the next time the fight begins, the boss is inert from the beginning. I thought maybe I killed it too quick, so I used weaker attacks, but that didn't have any effect.
And worse yet, NOBODY ELSE SEEMS TO HAVE ENCOUNTERED THIS GAME-BREAKING BUG.
This is a mandatory story boss. If I can't finish this boss fight, I CAN'T FINISH THE GAME.
I was really liking the game up until now, but this is pissing me off to no end.
What a perfect fucking way to end my goddamn birthday.

Yeah, I've still been on a Souls kick lately. I picked up Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree a while back, and never got around to playing it until now. I chose to start with a Flameweaver. Loving it so far! #Gaming #Mandragora #MandragoraWhispersoftheWitchTree #Soulslikes

Mandragora is a 2.5D metroidvania style Soulslike, comparable to Salt & Sanctuary, Salt & Sacrifice, The Last Faith, and Vigil: The Longest Night. It's got all the hallmarks of a good Soulslike. Stamina based combat, weighted gear, leveling one attribute per level up, and an open-ended world gated only by keys and abilities.
I'ma be real with y'all, I MUCH prefer this style of Soulslike over the traditional. Not that I dislike traditional Soulslikes, but the Metroidvanias speak to me way more. I'm way more comfortable making lots of different types of builds, timing all my parries and dodge rolls, and exploration and combat are both way more fun for me in these side scrolling Soulslikes than in regular Soulslikes.

The game gives you a choice of six character class archetypes to start the game with. Vanguard, which is your Fighter/Barbarian, Vindicator, your typical Paladin/Cleric, Wyldwarden, which is your Druid, Nightshade, your Rogue/Ninja character, Spellbinder, your typical Mage/Wizard, and Flameweaver, which is your Pyromancer. I chose Flameweaver, and BAHAHAHAHA fireball go brrrFWOOSH!!!

Did I mention this game has good bonk?
Because this game has GOOD BONK.
Sorry, I just really love weapons like maces, clubs, warhammers, and morning stars.
When I was a kid, they were my favorite medieval weapon, but as I started watching more anime, swords became my favorite as I grew up. Now maces are making a comeback and becoming my favorites all over again somehow.

Weirdly enough, this game doesn't really give me a Dark Souls vibe so much as it gives me a Castlevania vibe. Every time I explore one of this game's swamps, castles, or crypts, I hear the Super Castlevania IV soundtrack in my head.
I've decided to do a little level-grinding in this castle and play the soundtrack in the background, and they work SO WELL TOGETHER.

So I've never used Alt Text before until recently. I thought it was supposed to be used to add context to the pictures you post. Turns out it's used to... describe the picture itself? Everyone's Alt Text just looks like AI art prompts. Which is dumb on multiple levels.

I know this is the Doom Mod channel, but I also play lots of other games. Today, I beat Dark Souls: Remastered again. Now I've officially gotten both endings. I went for a Strength/Faith build this playthrough. HOLY BONK!!! #Gaming #DarkSouls #DarkSoulsRemastered #NintendoSwitch #Switch

A quick peek at my Fashion Souls.
This consists of the Steel Helmet, Artorias Armor, Black Knight Gauntlets, Black Iron Leggings, Havel's Greatshield, and Grant for the main weapon. I've also got the Avelyn, Gough's Greatbow, Ivory Talisman, and Tin Darkmoon Catalyst on backup when I need them.

Never beaten the final boss in 5 hits before, but here we are.
But, I guess that'll happen when you've maxed out your Strength and Faith at 99 each, upgraded Grant to +5, and used a two-handed leaping attack after enough playthroughs.

I don't often play through New Game +, to be honest, since I don't like how all the enemies get stronger in future cycles, but it's always satisfying to wake up in the Undead Asylum with all your cool gear from the end of the previous playthrough.

This one was REALLY hard for me, because I couldn't really decide on anything for Turn My Brain Off, Overrated, or Favorite Art Style.

The Rho requires advice. I am currently replaying Dark Souls: Remastered on my Switch ( y'know, when I'm not combining every Doom mod on Earth ), and... I hate going through Lost Izalith, the Tomb of the Giants, and the Crystal Caves. Should I postpone by going to Oolacile first?

So a new mod called Doom Deluxe just came out yesterday, and I just heard about it today, so I'm giving it a shot! Pretty cool so far. It's another one of those "Vanilla +" style mods, like Not-So-Vanilla, or Doom Comic '96. #Doom #DoomMod #UZDoom #DoomDeluxe

I tried my best to get a shot of this SSG gibbing that Shotgunner, but I hit the screencap button, like, a frame too soon before clicking M1. Oh well...

But, I managed to get a nice, big, goopy pile of giblets for you here with the rocket launcher!

At first, this Chaingun seemed a bit anemic, but then I learned pressing alt-fire pre-spins the barrel, and yields a MUCH faster fire rate.

I've only played on Easy so far, but it gave me most of the weapons in Map 1. Stuff like the BFG9K, the Chaingun, and the Plasma Rifle right from the outset. And this mod even has some new, unique weapons, too!

Doom Delta is a gameplay mod that includes multiple and various elements from Doom's Beta and Bible content that never made it into the finished game. Things like multiple player classes, various monster types, and more. Ironically, some of these elements were later used in Legacy of Rust.

Doom 2 The Way We Remember It is a fan community project where... well, it's exactly what it says on the tin. Map makers recreated every level from Doom 2 from memory, so... everything is here, present and accounted for... but things are a little... off...

Having new weapons is always fun, because I really love the grenade launcher this mod has, but then there's this thing, which... is it working? What does it do? I mean, it's severed demon arm that spews magic blasts, so it's awesome and metal as fuck, but what even is happening?

Seeing the beta version of the BFG-9000 is a lot of fun. I'm one of the weirdos who likes the beta BFG more than the far more powerful, far cooler final BFG. But all these maps created from memory really gives the impression that these are the beta versions of the levels. I love it but I hate it but I love it but I hate it. Navigating these maps is so weird. I kinda feel like these mods are perfect for each other.
