VIRUS ALERT! Sheeppox virus found in our parchment! Luckily, it is the ancient kind, so no extra precautions needed 😅 What a multidisciplinary effort - congrats to everyone involved! (Incidentally, the culprit MS is currently on display in our exhibition) www.science.org/content/arti...

Important blogpost by the wonderful colleague, @olivehigham.bsky.social. I was also approached to talk to these executives about the use of AI, and then turned down when I raised my reservations! open.substack.com/pub/olivehig...

My article for Epoch magazine is out today, inspired by the numerous questions my lovely undergraduate supervisees were asking about how medieval people calculated Easter, and why it was such a contentious issue! www.epoch-magazine.com/post/its-all...

Over the past four months I’ve had the pleasure of teaching a group of year 10 students on Fitzwilliam College’s Young Researchers’ Program about Medieval Manuscripts. We explored how parchment and inks were made, how books were constructed and how manuscripts were used. 1/2

I finished off my tour of Reykjavík’s research libraries with Landsbókasafn yesterday (rescheduled from the 23rd after I broke my wrist, and a later start than expected due to a snowstorm)! Some fascinating fragments added to my database and lots to think about when I get home.

I’ve had a wonderful time examining fragments in Þjóðskjalasafn Íslands and Árnastofnun! Next stop, Lansdsbókasafn (when this snowstorm clears).

Not the best start to my Reykjavík research trip as I slipped on ice under snow and broke my wrist! Really looking forward to hitting the archives tomorrow.

I gave my first lecture today, to undergraduate students taking Palaeography and Codicology! Such an amazing, full circle, pinch-me moment, as this was very much my favourite undergraduate paper! I’m very happy to have now taught all three ways undergraduate contact hours are delivered in ASNC.

Missing my first Evensong in six years with my chapel choir today. I’m really unwell but it’s still devastating.

I was delighted to teach a third year seminar this week. We discussed movement of books and book culture, new research (such as finds at St Catherine’s Sinai and biocodicology) and heard excellent presentations from three students on the Augustine Gospels, the Codex Grandior and the Vercelli Book.

#CFP for #IMC2026 'New Approaches to Medieval Office Liturgy'. @imc-leeds.bsky.social Please share widely and get in touch if you have any questions!
The image is of a poster with the following text on a dark blue background:

CFP: Leeds International Medieval Congress (6-9 July 2026)
Thematic Focus: ‘Temporalities’

The past decades have seen exciting developments in medieval liturgical scholarship, moving beyond analysis of texts to examining liturgical practices as diverse, lived, localised, and contested devotional frameworks. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the study of the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours: the cycle of daily prayers structured around the eight canonical hours (Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline) central to the spiritual, intellectual, temporal and communal life of the medieval Christian world.

This panel invites proposals for 15-20 minute papers on any aspect of Medieval Office Liturgy, especially those that address new perspectives, methodologies, or understudied sources.

Topics may include (but are not limited to):
⁃ Office Manuscripts
⁃ Intersections with visual and material culture
⁃ Lay experiences of the Divine Office
⁃ Liturgical Reform
⁃ Performance Practices and/or Prescriptions
⁃ The Liturgy of the Hours in Medieval Literature
⁃ Temporality and the Canonical Hours
⁃ Saints lives, cults and offices

Please send an abstract of up to 250 words and short biography including your affiliation(s) to Rhiannon Warren (rlow2@cam.ac.uk) by the 31st of August 2025

Spending this morning transcribing a fragment of a 12th century Icelandic lectionary. It’s somehow easier than my task yesterday (checking one name in a litany in Cotton Vitellius A VII in the British Library) though I think the cotton fire had a lot to do with that!
