I did research on Thai food recently, because I assumed it was like Chinese food, with a rich history of authentic Chinese-American invention creating the dishes we see in American Chinese cuisine, but the Thai food story is weirder and also super interesting. Food is tasty. Your story sounds cool.

Today I hit a 3650-day streak in Duolingo. 10 years. It should be a moment of triumph, to have successfully studied every day for so long. Instead I just feel sad, at the loss of what Duolingo used to be, and a bit ashamed to still have a streak there at all, considering what they've become. 😣

Yeah, I grew up in a neighborhood in LA where, at least back then, the helicopters just went all night. They'd shine their lights right into our yard. After we moved away, I heard someone admitted that was why. Just recently is the first time Portland has ever reminded me of living there.

Right now, in my neighborhood, the police sirens are constant all night, to the point that I've wondered if it's a deliberate demoralization tactic. I want more police like I want a hole in the head (and the two aren't mutually exclusive). We need other forms of neighborhood response.

I've been using #busuu for less than 2 weeks, but it is so much better. It has the community learning that Duo ditched. It explains grammar and helps you understand concepts. I have yet to encounter an error (duo has always been full of errors). And I see the point of Busuu's premium. Might try.

12 or so yrs ago, when I started Duolingo, I dreamed of the day when I could afford to pay premium, to support their "mission". By the time I had money, they'd removed every feature I found worth paying for, and now they've gotten worse. I no longer understood why anyone would get premium.

That sounds normal to me for people in their 20s. In some ways I still feel like that, now and then, but I've just gotten used to it. I think identity is coherent and makes sense when you're a kid. As a teen it fragments, but we can construct order. As adults it's all just fucking complicated.
