Rhi's 4 star review of Wheel of Time: The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan

"Ok, I get Wheel of Time.

Compared to The Eye of the World, Jordan's approach to pacing makes a lot more sense now that the wheel is turning. His world is monumental, with a million plates spinning at any given time. While that seems daunting, every new element is foreshadowed hundreds of pages, if not whole books, ahead of time, and the slow roll of the story gives the reader plenty of time to metabolize major changes before the next one arrives.

The Great Hunt is also significantly less derivative than Eye of the World (though not completely free of it, hello blue-eyed, clan-based, water-worshipping desert warriors forged in the crucible of the hostile desert, destined to be lead out of it by a messiah from the West...).

For the three boys, I feel like we got most of their character definition in the first book, with the Great Hunt hammers home their places in the story. Despite getting less of a word count, it's the girls who really get some development in this one, with their hogwarts shennanigans really helping to shape the characters.

The Great Hunt is spoils the reader in world-building, fleshing out tons of things just hinted at in the first book (see the previously mentioned million spinning plates). Getting to see how the Aes Sedai work, how different nations view and interact with each other, factions from off the edge of the map, multiverse stuff.

Not unlike the first book, the pacing really speeds up at the end, which I guess it has to but it does leave a few loose ends and unsatisfactory conclusions, but I guess that's just Jordan's style and once I'm onto book 3 I'm sure I'll forget all about it.

Really enjoyed the Great Hunt, I'm fully on board now! "

They closed the feedback form for the Mount Pleasant data centre rezoning so here's the email I sent instead
I am a Mount Pleasant resident, and I am deeply concerned about the planned AI data centre for my neighbourhood. I'm sure you've heard plenty about the concerns around excess water use by data centres, especially in an area that gets regular water-use restrictions in the summer, and I'm sure you've also been made aware of the over-statement of the effectiveness of "closed cooling systems". There are also serious concerns about persistent noise that people forced to live next to these types of facilities regularly report.

The idea that this will somehow be beneficial for the economy of my neighbourhood in the medium-to-long term is also unconvincing, as aside from the benefits to the construction industry which would be present regardless of the type of building being renovated, data centres create very few persistent jobs beyond a few security guards. For the economy at large, AI has been credibly identified as a bubble based on wild speculation of the value of companies and over-estimations of increases in productivity in order to justify the aforementioned over-valuation. Beyond that, the idea of a "sovereign AI infrastructure" is an artificial arms race sold to countries by NVIDIA in order to sell more graphics cards, and in turn has led to companies scamming their governments with promised capacity in places like the UK. As a former worker in the tech industry and someone who follows this topic closely, what I see is the city wasting valuable resources on what will immediately be a warehouse full of expensive graphics cards fulfilling prompts created by other AI agents for the soul purpose of making it look like these companies are doing something, and will soon be a warehouse full of obsolete graphics cards.

It was a slog at the start, really good in the middle, and a bit of a fumble at the end
3 star goodreads review

Look, The Eye of the World is really good when it's just doing it's own thing. Robert Jordan is great at writing tense situations and actions, and his world has some astounding breadth (if not depth). I'm looking forward to the next book. But the closeness with which this book follows the story beats of Fellowship of the Ring was seriously distracting. Like sure, all fantasy does it, but this was extremely "filed off the serial numbers" writing. I can see how the characters special traits are being set up for the next books, but everyone was pretty bland in this one, with Rand especially lacking main-character charisma. I also found Moraine extremely overpowered, which did allow the obstacles early on to be more extreme but it was a bit unsatisfying how they breezed through it.

The middle third of the book was really tight, once the characters got split up and we got to see their unique elements in a much more high stakes situation. Like I said, Jordan writes tension really really well, and the three groups getting chased through the wilderness was hard to put down. The descriptions of places were extremely vivid and evocative as well.

I didn't love the end, with the book spending so long focusing just surviving long enough to reach destination A and then suddenly changing to destination B. I feel like for the length of the book some of the stuff that's dropped in the last 100 pages could have been set up better (especially a couple villains who jump in right at the end, I found not having specific characters chasing the kids down seemed like a bit of an oversight early on).

Everyone says the series gets better after this one, and though I complain I liked this book more than I disliked it, but parts dragged or made me roll my eyes when I caught what Jordan was ripping off. Oh well, on to The Great Hunt!
