Overseas, Albanese sees ‘the very definition of climate injustice’ – but at home, he still wants coal
It isn’t hard to see a contradiction between the PM’s message in Fiji and his opposition to legal action to stop a NSW coalmine

It must be so tedious for @adammorton.bsky.social to write yet another column debunking the outrageous porkies sprouted by the Coalition in relation to energy matters in our country

The Coalition and One Nation are complicit in the unfolding climate catastrophe. Gina Rinehart and her minions should rot in hell for treating this a laughing matter

The perils of climate change are accelerating My wife and I have cancelled a mid-May 2027 cruise from Fremantle to Sydney via the Top End due to the risk of very unpleasant weather, or worse. Used the refund to book the Indian Pacific train Not 👀 4wd to summer www.theguardian.com/environment/...

(2) Actively use international forums and bilateral relationships to advocate for a rapid decline in fossil-fuel consumption (3) Provide technical support for other countries to follow the examples of our energy transition (4) Assist Pacific nations with abatement and renewable energy projects

Fossil-fuel production approvals are driven by demand in other countries. Any government that cut supplies to meet that demand would be thrown out at the first opportunity. To "help protect Pacific nations", we should: (1) Accelerate our transition away from using fossil fuels for power, cars, etc

From The Guardian today "Australia needs a firmer plan to transition away from fossil-fuel production to help protect Pacific nations from the effects of climate change, according to [The Australia Institute] In theory, sounds like a good policy. In practice, no better than a slogan. Why? Read on ..

Tricky indeed Rachel. However, with valuable input from Weerappulli and Zaracho, you've produced as clear and useful a story as is possible, given the constraints. Technical Q: Do wind speeds reduce when the energy of the wind turns the blades of the turbines?

Seriously though, I get the impression that geographical literacy has declined compared to our school days. I wonder if all the use of map apps to find where a location is and how to get to a destination have eroded basic knowledge of points of the compass, etc

Choice quotes from Andrew Bragg on ABC radio today Asked if low-income earners should just accept that they will live in substandard housing. “Yes, definitely”, he replies. Speaking of superannuation: "now you’re going to have super for under 18s and soon you’ll have super for cats and dogs."

🧵 2/ I'll begin my tale of woe with what should be obvious - the impacts of climate change are becoming more extreme and frequent by the year. Exhibit A: the northern hemisphere right now. What's almost as woeful is that conservative political parties continue to practise climate-change denialism

Fair comment I expect it will soon start of its own accord. Eg, Pakistan has rapidly reduced its use of gas to produce electricity and cancelled orders for gas from Qatar I also expect Woodside to be left with stranded assets 🙌 Trump is unwittingly accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels 👏

Any politician who makes that promise knows they won't be able to keep it. It would take years to implement and the cost of the legal consequences would be prohibitive My vote will go to the politician who promises to accelerate the current efforts to reduce Australia's demand for oil, gas and coal

A cogent piece by @profraywills.futuresmart.com.au that portrays ALP conference as renewable energy (RE) milestone, in which RE is a key economic driver AND differences of opinion re domestic and export uses of gas = unresolved tension rather than overt conflict reneweconomy.com.au/labor-confer...

Labor conference puts electrification at the centre – and gas smells like a political fault line
The lesson from Adelaide is not that Labor solved the gas question. It is that the party still understands the future is with renewables, electrification and decarbonisation.
