Ach ja, Falls ihr eissen wollt, wie die Dekoriererei gestern rausgekommen is! (Hugo hat einfach direkt mal nen Schal spendiert bekommen, der verwöhnte Bengel.)

I guess we should have known better than to reffer to the whole thing as "Middleearth" rather than... I don't know "Arda" or something?

Also my work friend and I were looked down upon because we pointed out that the library we work at currently has an exhibition about fantastical maps and we actually acquired a giant globe of Tolkien's world.

Also thank GOD there were no actual Valaisan's in our group. The Gollum jokes would have been unbearable...

It was not a cheap meal, but it was definitely the highlight of our day.

The restaurant staff was super nice, they provided us with food in record time brought the bill alongside the food so we could just eat, get up and get to the bus, asked if we wanted them to remind us at a certain time. And the food was absolutely amazing.

On a more positive note: After we escaped from Mr. Greisinger's basement, we stopped by the nearby restaurant for something to eat. We had PRECIOUS little time, because the last regular bus without the need for a reservation an hour before departure departed at 21:00.

Reachable with public transport. We wanted to see everything. We did not realise that apparently meant everything, including the heat death of the goddamn universe.

We had set aside what would already have been a very long six-and-a-half-hour day for this. Instead, an entire lovely Saturday afternoon and evening disappeared into that basement. And mind you this Museum is in Switzerland's asscrack. It is a very beautiful asscrack but it is not easily

And perhaps don't publicly mock paying visitors for not meeting your personal Tolkien-fandom entrance requirements and making every one in the room feel like they're not trve enuff for you

If the actual experience is an open-ended lecture and tour that may continue for almost ten hours, then advertise that. Tell people to bring an actual meal. Schedule breaks. Give people some idea of when they will be able to leave.

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
By the time we got to see the actual collection we were all a bit hangry and just wanted to get this over with. That is not "oh the tour ran a bit long".

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
But I did not book an open-ended Tolkien seminar followed by a museum tour. I booked something advertised as a guided museum tour from 10:10 to 16:40. We got out somewhere between 19:30 and 20:0. That is about than three hours after the advertised end of an already six-and-a-half-hour event.

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The frustrating thing is that I probably would have enjoyed parts of the experience very much under different circumstances. The collection itself is very interesting, and quite a lot of the information in the lecture was interesting as well.

Which strikes me as a bizarre attitude for a museum supposedly intended for people who are enthusiastic about Tolkien. Guess what one can be enthusiastic and interested even if they've only seen the movies. I for example happen to know a thing or two about norse (excuse me GERMANIC) Mythology.

The overall atmosphere was strangely gatekeepy. There was a constant feeling that if you couldn't quote The Silmarillion from memory, you were tolerated rather than welcomed. You might like Tolkien, certainly, but are you a REAL Tolkien fan?

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
They took it better than I did, but after the 20th time they also did not find it funny anymore.

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
A younger man in the group, who had read the Silmarillion multiple times & was by far the most knowledgable of us, repeatedly got put on the spot with an air of “You should know that.”

My workfriend, who had joined us spontaneously and actually studied English and history, got mocked for liking the English language, because "English is a garbage language." Says J.R.R. Tolkien, apparently

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
To his credit, Mr. Greisinger apparently noticed that this had not gone over particularly well and mostly left me alone afterwards. Instead, other people became targets.

About 30 min into a tour I had paid CHF 65 for, I was sitting there feeling publicly humiliated & trying not to cry. Looking back I should have left then and there, the actual collection be damned.

Which I told him, when he asked even though frankly it is none of his business why or why I don't finish a book. He had nothing better to do than to crack dumb jokes & humiliate me.
110
Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
In the beginning he asked everyone which Tolkien books they had read and which adaptations they had seen. Fair enough. Unfortunately, I have read roughly half of The Hobbit and half of The Lord of the Rings. Because ADHD has repeatedly defeated my attempts to actually finish the books.

Also Americans are idiots. Repeat as necessary. Or ad nauseam. More importantly, practically every joke seemed to come at somebody else's expense.
110
Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Unfortunately, the way he presented it was near unbearable. He seemed to have approx. 3 jokes, which were recycled throughout the day: Gollum is a Valaisan. French is Bullshit. English is also Bullshit. German and Old English are wonderful. The movies are wrong. Peter Jackson is an idiot.

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Some of it genuinely was interesting. Greisinger clearly knows a great deal about Tolkien, the languages, the mythology and the history behind the books. There were absolutely things I enjoyed learning.

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
With no scheduled meal breaks and only whatever snacks visitors had thought to bring with them. Technically, you could take a break whenever you wanted. Practically, that meant deciding which part of the lecture you were willing to miss. Should have missed more.

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
We had spent the bulk of the time in Mr. Greisinger's party basement, listening to him lecture about Tolkien and his work, the language, the mythology, the secret catholic meaning of it all...

What we had prepared ourselves for was six and a half hours. Which is already a very long museum visit. What we actually got was more of a a hostage situation.

Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
There is also a “Long guided tour for Tolkien fans” for CHF 65, which was listed in the event calendar as running from 10:10 to 16:40. Obviously, we booked the long tour. If I'm going to a private Tolkien museum, I want to see the damn museum.
110
Bibliotheks-Laura @rezimafia.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
In case you'd like to know more: The museum can only be visited as part of a guided tour. A normal tour costs CHF 50 and is advertised as taking around three to four hours. This is not a criticism, just context.

We visited the Greisinger Museum last weekend and now I can claim I have been held hostage in a millionair's basement. That... is certainly something.

I cannot believe this is an actual coincidence that happened in the real world. Anyway, I am choosing to believe Dolly has unfinished business and is gathering power over the Atlantic to come for Donald Trump’s ass specifically. Good for her.

I just learned that, three days after Dolly Parton died, there is now a tropical storm forming over the Atlantic called Dolly. And no, apparently nobody named it after her. The storm names are predetermined. “Dolly” was simply next on the list.
