#inktober Day 2; Relic I chose to choose something that’s a relic to us (although admittedly any fossil would’ve worked). Have the namesake of the living fossil, the Permian Coelacanthus #paleoart #paleosky #gijinka #oc #ocart #ocsky #coelacanthus
Coelacanthus
Coelan
Hollow Spine

Coelacanths as a group have been around for ages, with Coelacanthus being the first one found, way before the one was fished up off the coast of Africa. Coelacanthus is from the Permian, and as such is one of the lucky few marine clades to survive past the great dying and the two hundred million years or so into the modern day. A true survivor.

I only see Coelan’s at night. I suspect they spend most of their time during the day asleep at the bottom of the ocean or in caves. They’re slow moving, and often have a bit of a derpy smile to them, but I think it’s quite cute to see. Sometimes they’ll come out too early and I’ll see them stumbling about in the water, struggling to see in the evening light. I’ve even had a few bump into me when I’m at the surface watching, and I always just very gently push them back to deeper water.

After a day of deliberation, I gotta interrupt the comic to bring you #inktober day 1, Gastornis, a terror bird relative who enjoyed fruit rather than flesh. #paleoart #paleosky #oc #ocsky #dinosaur #dinosaurart #gijinka
Gastornis
Gastoni
Gaston’s Bird

Despite what many people think, Gastornis was not a terror bird, although closely related. Terror birds are commonly understood as Phorusrachidae, which Gastornis is not a part of. It lived several million years before the first true terror bird, as most of them popped up in the neogene and recently have been found to possibly having lived until 25,000 years ago. Gastornis also is known for being a frugivore, eating fruits and seeds instead of small animals like its descendants would.

Gastoni's are actually surprisingly nice to run into. They aren't territorial, they won't chase you, they just want their fruits. They'll use their beaks to break branches they can reach and cause the fruit to drop, often then sitting down and enjoying their harvest. With the abundance of fruit, they aren't very defensive of it, though they do pack a mean kick and peck if you really do piss them off. Like all animals, they still should only be viewed from a distance... but I cannot lie, the occasional free fruit break when exploring is VERY nice to have in an environment as unforgiving as these islands.

So recently I’ve been on a bit of an invertebrate kick, that isn’t ending any time soon with the amount of cephalopods in my sights, so have an extinct giant honey bee! Not to be confused with the extant giant honey bee. #paleoart #invertebrate #oc #ocsky #gijinka #paleosky
Apis Lithohermaea (Giant Honey Bee)
Honey
Stone Messenger Bee

The giant honey bee, (this one at least, there are two. Apis Lithohermaea, the extinct, and Apis Dorsata, the living one) is a fossil specimen first discovered in Japan. Not much is known about these bees other than their impressive size (for bees), and their relative likeness to modern bees. The fossils are impressions in stone, preserving the entire body and wings. It’s also the first bee in the Dorsata species group to be found in the fossil record, and one of the most far north.

Honey’s are very friendly surprisingly. There’s a reason that the Neogene island is one of the most flowering. It’s the abundance of insects like her that buzz around. Often times however, their wings are too small to keep their bodies up, and they’ll accidentally make other creatures into pollinators. They’ll often find a nearby large, furry mammal who won’t swat them away, and just rest on them. All the while, their fuzz is leaking pollen. If they particularly like an animal in their territory, they’ll decorate her in flowers. No, I have not had the chance to find a saxophone to see if they like jazz, shut up.

Been a little while since I posted because I’ve been slacking on the descriptions, but hey! Have Uintacrinus, probably the weirdest animal I’ve done so far! #paleoart #paleosky #crinoid #ocsky #ocart #gijinka
Uintacrinus
Utacri
Crinoid from the Uinta Mountains

Crinoids are a very interesting animal order. They're echinoderms, so related to sea sponges, starfish, and urchins. Crinoids opted for the sedentary lifestyle, anchoring themselves to stone or rock or coral and catching whatever algae or other food passed by.. except for one. Uintacrinus is a crinoid from the cretaceous, but more strangely, is found fossilized in these massive sheets of just it, tangled within itself and other organisms. Ultimately, this turned into a discovery.. Uintacrinus was a free-swimming crinoid, floating around in massive groups like floating coral reefs.

Utacri reefs are very rare, I will admit. They aren't that large, maybe a few feet long at the biggest, but there's always tons of them. They float around like jellyfish, occasionally randomly reaching for whatever prey catches their eye. They'll grab onto anything if they think its interesting, though that sometimes causes giant predators to get caught up in them like nets. That.. doesn't end well for the Utacri's.

I've unfortunately come to the part of doing all the canon JW animals that the ones left just.. don't interest me or are ugly as sin. So instead, I decided to reference something else with this one, have Altispinax. #dinosaurart #paleoart #paleosky #oc #ocsky #gijinka #fossilfighters
Altispinax
Altix
With high spines

Altispinax is a carnosaurid theropod from the very very early Cretaceous. Admittedly it’s a very fragmentary animal, and there isn’t much to write about. It was confused for megalosaurus like five times? Arguably its claim to fame comes from the fact that Jurassic world knowingly used its junior taxa, becklespinax. When asked, the artists didn’t even know why they picked it, just that it was always the Junior synonym.

Altix are.. not that common. I actually see their young ones far more, but I decided to find an adult to document. The adults turn gray and green, while the little ones are brown and yellow. That pattern does stay with the Altix. The young ones are boisterous, aggressive, and just.. kinda mean. However they mellow out in their age, often digging around in the dirt for entertainment. I’ve seen them even pick fights over finding bones, and many times itll end with bloodshed. Not necessarily death, but these guys are certainly *FOSSIL FIGHTERS*.
...I’ll see myself out.

I finally remembered I was doing these collections. Here's all three new species from Jurassic World. Yep. Only three. There are no other animals in that movie. (oh and Brachi cameo) #jurassicworld #paleoart #paleosky #dinosaur #dinosaurart #oc #ocsky #gijinka
Brachiosaurus
Bracchi
Arm Lizard

Brachiosaurus is a very well understood sauropod, and often said to be the most famous, in no doubt to John Williams. While not the tallest, longest, or even the most interesting, Brachiosaurus will always hold a place in many’s hearts.

Bracchi’s are sweet, soft spoken, and gentle giants. They’re the only prey no predator dare even touch. For some reason, if a single scratch is ever laid on a Bracchi, every Rexxi on the island will descend on whatever dared hurt it.

Apatosaurus
Apatta
Deceptive Lizard

Apatosaurus held their heads, necks, and tails significantly more parallel to the ground. While still sauropods, they’re the flagship of these longer necks, apart from maybe Diplodocus.

Appatta’s are an unfortunate victim of dinosaur women height scaling. Due to their height being exactly with how the animal way, Appatta’s are often given the short end of the stick. Instead, they pair up with larger sauropods and become practically impenetrable herds of massive giants. In return to taking the front spots, the taller sauropods will help the Appatta’s reach branches they might not be able to otherwise.Dimorphodon
Dimorpha
Two-form teeth

Dimorphodon is an early Jurassic pterosaur, back when they had much longer tails. Its jaw has two types of teeth, long sharp front teeth and smaller, needle teeth towards the back. In pterosaurs, teeth were already fairly uncommon, but having two types was even more so. Dimorphodon itself is fairly “primitive” but late Cretaceous standards, and don’t get me started on the pug-rex-block-face that Jurassic World gave it.

Dimorpha are stand-offish. They’re loud, boisterous, and often try to seem a lot bigger than they are. They’re small, but considering there’s not many other pterosaurs on the Jurassic island, she can get away with it. Dimorpha’s are also fairly like raccoons, eating anything they can catch. They’re fairly easily to scare away though, after all.. they’re barely a meter tall.Mosasaurus
Mosa
Meuse Lizard

The mosasaurus is the most defining apex predator of the aquatic cretaceous seas. Evolving from jurassic monitor lizards, it became one of the first lizards to give live birth. Mosasaurus and other aquatic reptiles are not dinosaurs, they are aquatic reptiles in their own order. In fact, they branch before dinosaurs, since Dinosauria and Reptilia are different Classes. The Mosa pictured is actually the oldest designed creature here, due to being from a previous story and world, and transferred here. As such, her design may feel out of place due to having the hood down a majority of the time.

I need to get better about posting these, have an Amargasaurus. #dinosaur #dinosaurart #paleosky #paleoart #oc #ocsky #gijinka
Amargasaurus
Mara
La Amarga Lizard

Amargasaurus is a sauropod from… you guessed it, Argentina. I’d be rich if I had a dollar for each species from Argentina. Anyway, it’s from the Cretaceous and actually has a very interesting debate going on. Amargasaurus had massive neural spines that jutted out from the back of its neck, and there’s two leading theories. Either they were just exposed, or they were covered by a sail like on Dimetrodon and spinosaurus. As you can see, I went with the sail variation, even though it seems the current majority are in favor of just exposed spines.

Mara’s are peaceful, although they’re some of the only sauropods I’ve really seen stand up and fight. Most other sauropods will kick and walk away, often times actually leading to them bleeding out. I’ve not seen a Mara that hasn’t taken its attacker down. Their sails are a very good deterrent from attackers, but those who try end up with this girl slamming the back of her head as hard as possible into whatever’s trying to kill her. If they’re lucky, they can even survive, although it’s extremely painful. This also mangles their sails, so the smaller Mara’s tend to center around any Mara without a sail. They even take care of each other to try and make sure the Mara that was attacked isn’t killed by the broken spines.

So now that I found out that surviving earth is available to me (and watching it), decided to visit a part of the islands that not many people do.. Scutosaurus, and the Northern Rift #paleoart #paleosky #oc #ocsky #gijinka
Scutosaurus
Scuti
Shield Lizard

Scutosaurus is a heavily armored herbivore from the late Permian, and was likely the largest animal to walk on land thus far. It’s likely to have been heavier than a tonne, and also likely lived in large groups that would travel. It had heavy plating along its back with strong osteoderms being preserved along its back and head.

The northern rift is a range that’s extremely dangerous. The air is dense with carbon dioxide, the oxygen thin up high, and the heat impossible to survive below. There’s a crater that just spews lava. Not even the plant life survives. If you’re ever here, run. This place is inhospitable to everything but the smallest burrowers. The rift causes the oceans to turn to acid and the rain to burn. Nothing should be here, but when the wind blows right, it scares the animals that live inland to retreat from the heat. Their instincts are to climb, and unfortunately that sometimes brings them up to the northern rift. The ground is lined with fallen gorgonopsids, and sometimes a herd of scuto’s. I try to not interfere, especially on islands I don’t live, but I couldn’t watch this girl die alone. I took her back down the mountain, away from the smoke, I hope she’ll be okay.

Granted I only checked recently, but after two years, I finally completed the alphabet. And for some reason, the last letter was J. Have a Juxia. #Paleoart #paleosky #oc #ocsky #gijinka
Juxia
Juxi
Gigantic Rhinoceros

Juxia is a relative small paraceratheriid, a group of large mammals closely related to modern rhinoceros. Juxia is about the size of a horse, which while still large, is nowhere near the sizes later paraceratheriids got, including paraceratherium itself being in contention for the largest land mammal ever. Admittedly, Juxia is interesting as the small start to a massive lineage, but I chose it purely so I could have an animal that’s name began with J-

Juxi’s act like horses, which is kind of funny considering other horses are on these islands. I suppose then, Juxi acts more like a donkey or a rhino. While the horses run at the slightest bit of danger, Juxi’s stand their ground. They’re surprisingly strong, although they’re also not opposed to running and finding a larger paraceratheriid to hide behind (boy am I tired of writing that word)

Coming back and trying to face some fears. It didn’t work. Have the Hell Ants! (Or at least 6/10 of them) #paleoart #paleosky #gijinka #oc #ocsky #originalart
Hell Ants
Hellan
Haidomyrmecinae

Hell ants are a diverse set of ants made up of 10 extinct genuses all from the middle Cretaceous. Most fossils of these guys are encased in amber, leading to pretty perfect preservation. The one downside is I am scared of bugs, especially up close, so this was a terrifying art session. The genuses represented here are Haidomyrmex, Chonidris, Aquilomyrmex, Haitoderminus, Dhagnathus, and Linguamyrmex. The rest of the genus either were only preserved in one fossil, were too similar to the already represented genus, I straight up could not understand what I was looking at, or a mix of those.

Hellan’s act like ants for the most part. They’re by far some of the smallest girls I’ve seen, maybe only an inch or two tall each, blowing the previous smallest out of the water.. ironic considering it was Haikouichthys. They’re somewhat territorial, and I’ve seen quite a lot of cross-genus collaboration between them. The one issue is that because of this, they keep creeping onto the shore and trying to steal my food supply. The good news is that the Kyua’s LOVE them, so I don’t have to worry as much about sharing my rations.

So uh catching up on shark week, have a BUNCHA SHARKS #paleoart #paleosky #sharkweek #oc #ocsky #gijinka
Stethacanthus
Stethany
Chest spike

Stethacanthus is a Carboniferous cartilaginous fish closely related to sharks. They’re defined by their weird dorsal fins, which as you can see, are shaped like an anvil, being flat on top. Males of the genus also had spines along their fins.

Because of the fin, Stethany’s are very slow. They tend to spend their time, digging in the dirt to try and find bivalves and other small shell animals to eat. They tend to stay on the ground as bottom feeders, digging up the sand and blending in from above. Interestingly though, they migrate, often by cutting through the main swamps of the island to reach the other shores. Every few months, the places I find Stethany’s changes, and it would explain why I randomly found like twenty of them in the swamp one day about a month ago.Edestus
Eddi
To Devour

Edestus is a Carboniferous Shark best known for its odd dentition. Instead of the rows of teeth most sharks have, Edestus had a single row of teeth running down the center of its jaws. This monster is a swimming pair of scissors. It’s also possibly the largest marine predator to have existed up to that point, although later would be dethroned by parahelicoprion.

Eddi’s are quite vicious. They’re very grabby. I’ve seen them grab whatever random pieces of driftwood and shear it in half. It’s almost impulsive. It wouldn’t be that much of a problem if they weren’t trying to disconnect my air. Admittedly.. they are extremely goofy with their hoods closed. Many of the animals do that when asleep, but because of the teeth, you can still clearly see her eyes when she’s asleep.Ptychodus
Ptykie
Fold Tooth

Ptychodus is a very strange shark that I just recently learned of, but has rapidly become one of my favorites. Instead of the classic teeth you expect from a shark, this Cretaceous beast has flat teeth that layer on top of each other to act like a crushing force. It ate ammonites and perhaps turtles, by crushing the shells open and eating what was inside.

Ptykie’s are fairly docile from what I’ve seen. They love crushing anything they can get their mouth around, which normally isn’t a problem. They love ammonites and turtles, often chasing after them and grabbing the shells. Sometimes, the ammonite can rip herself out of the shell and survive, albeit extremely wounded, but most of the time they get eaten. The one issue is.. she thinks my air tanks are a shell to break open.
