Banned book highlight: "Tuck Everlasting" by Natalie Babbitt. 🌿 Often challenged for themes of death, this classic reflects a core truth of doula care: mortality gives life meaning, and death is a natural cycle—not something to fear or censor. #BannedBooksWeek #DeathDoula #DeathPositive
Front cover of Tuck Everlasting: The Graphic Novel. The top text reads "NATALIE BABBITT'S TUCK EVERLASTING" in dark serif font, with "THE GRAPHIC NOVEL" centered beneath it. The watercolor illustration displays a warm sunset sky with a low sun over a lake. Tall pine trees frame the scene, with a cozy log cabin showing glowing yellow windows on the right bank. In the distance, two figures sit in a small blue rowboat on the water. The bottom text reads "ADAPTED AND ILLUSTRATED BY K. WOODMAN-MAYNARD".Front cover of the novel Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. The author's name is printed in large brown text across the top, above the book title in outlined serif letters. On the left is a circular emblem reading "CELEBRATING 50 YEARS - FOREWORD by Gabrielle Zevin". The lower half features a sepia-toned watercolor scene of a small red cabin surrounded by pine trees on the shore of a lake, with two dark silhouette figures in a rowboat on the water reflecting the red house.

Music has a way of holding our deepest memories and values. 🎶 Comment below with one song that must be on your life's final playlist. I’ll start with a banger that I’d love to take my last breaths to: open.spotify.com/track/5kguTo... #DeathDoula #LegacyProject #EndOfLifePlanning
Screenshot of the Spotify mobile app playing "Tonight, Tonight" by The Smashing Pumpkins. The media player interface displays the song title, artist name, album artwork, playback controls, progress bar at 0:20, and a "Switch to video" button. In the dark background, a shadowy figure wearing a top hat is framed against a star-filled night sky.

Yes! I haven’t read it yet but it’s on my #TBR: The First to Die at the End might be a great pickup for you! It’s the prequel to They Both Die at the End. In it, two strangers’ lives begin to collide right as one of them receives the very first ever Death-Cast call. Hope this works for ya! 🤞

As a #DeathDoula, I hold space for losses that society tries to ignore. Grief doesn't disappear just because it makes others uncomfortable. We honor the living and the dead by refusing to censor grief. If this (or any other) book has helped you navigate an unacknowledged loss, let me know

Today's 2nd #BannedBooksWeek highlight: "More Happy Than Not", also by Adam Silvera. 🤍. It deeply explores disenfranchised grief: suicide loss, closeted heartbreak, and the urge to erase trauma. Banning books like this doesn't protect readers; it just isolates those carrying unspeakable pain.
Front cover of the book More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera. The title is written in large, bold, light-blue sans-serif lettering stacked in three lines ("MORE", "HAPPY", "THAN NOT") across a textured, yellow background. A black spray-painted smiley face outline is visible behind the text. The author's name, "ADAM SILVERA", is printed in bold black text in the bottom-right corner.

It also allows us to plan with intention, cherish chosen family, and live fully right now. As death doulas, our priority is to ensure that each dying person's story and identity are fully witnessed. 🤍 2/2 #DeathDoula #LGBTQ #DeathPositive

Today's first of two #BannedBooksWeek highlights: "They Both Die at the End" by Adam Silvera. 📖 I love that this is on @en3myp1nkk.bsky.social annual reading list! Following two queer teens on their last day, it shows how facing mortality forces us to live with total authenticity. 🧵 1/2
Book cover featuring a bold, high-contrast blue-and-white color palette. The top half depicts a starry, deep-blue night sky with a bright full moon and faint profile silhouettes of two faces in the upper clouds. Below the sky, a dark city skyline provides the backdrop for the white, centered title text reading "THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END". In the foreground, two silhouetted figures carrying backpacks walk side-by-side along a railed waterfront walkway, casting a long shadow on the bright white path below. The bottom section contains dark text on a white background reading "The New York Times bestseller by ADAM SILVERA".

Post 3/3 Frequently challenged for confronting sudden childhood loss, this classic shows how grief breaks us open. We can't shield people from loss—we can only walk beside them in it. My signed hardcover copy remains among my most valued possessions.

Post 1/3 For #BannedBooksWeek, I'll share titles that are often banned because their content presents inconvenient truths about death, dying, and grief. Starting us off, I'm nostalgic to share the most impactful book of my young life: "Bridge to Terabithia" by Katherine Paterson. 🌿🧵

Currently reading Briefly, Perfectly Human by Alua Arthur, and the quote deeply resonated with me. It captures the heartbeat of why I want to do this work: everyone deserves to be truly seen and valued, especially as they approach the end of life. 🤍 #deathdoula #bookstagram #amreading

Post 2/2 They may feel ashamed for grieving, or even gaslit into thinking they “shouldn't be so upset”. So let’s just agree: grief doesn't require social permission to exist. The absence of someone else's approval doesn't make the loss less devastating to experience. #griefsupport #deathdoula

Scott Burnam @reverentridge.org · 26/09/2026
Post 1/2 So to recap: disenfranchised grief is real. It matters to name it because its pain is often compounded by a lack of validation. The grieving person doesn't just lose something or someone; they also lose access to the rituals, support systems, and social permission that help them heal.🧵

Amazing work! Death salons led by Black, brown, and LGBTQ+ doulas are creating safe spaces to discuss mortality, grief, and end-of-life care. By addressing cultural stigmas, systemic barriers, and traditions, they’re helping marginalized communities embrace death on their own terms. 🌿✨

A #deathdoula supports many facets of end-of-life planning: legacy & life review projects, vigil plans & bedside care, & other non-medical needs. There’s nothing morbid about this kind of planning. It makes this difficult but inevitable transition easier for the dying and their circles of care.
