Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Mine inhaled it (has now moved on to inhaling Alex Rider) and I can see why! 100
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 04/10/20264 Oct - a proper book. Macfarlane is an extraordinary writer & this is an extraordinary book in its scope & reach & prose. I liked it more than The Old Ways, which I liked a lot - it is more human (despite its vast scale). Very bleak, very true-feeling, and not without hope. 000
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 04/10/202627 September - the second in the above series. I need to stop reading these or I will read literally nothing else. And part of my aim this year was to read _less_ YA urban fantasy, not more... 310

Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I did not think that question through!! Thank you. 010
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Oh! You are the person I need (I don't have library access any more...) Were vesting prayers a thing in C16-17 Anglicanism? Thinking about Herbert's _Aaron_, which is a vesting prayers in its own way, and wondering if that was part of H's context. 220
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 29/09/2026My hunch is that a lot of people (perhaps a majority) want it to be the way it was before we left. But I agree there's clearly a plurality of ideas. 000
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Still let them succour us, still let them fight, Lord of angelic hosts, battling for right; Till where their anthems they ceaselessly pour, we with the angels may bow and adore. 110
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Who like the Lord? thunders Michael the Chief Raphael, the Cure of God, comforteth grief; and as at Nazareth, prophet of peace, Gabriel, the Light of God, bringeth release. 120
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Oh - thank you ! I kept Lancelot Andrewes, but it passed me by that it was the 400th anniversary. What a writer. 120
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 20/09/202620 September - apparently having a 9yo means he recommends books to me as well as the other way round? And they're really good? Wow. 120
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 20/09/2026I say this with all respect: are you thinking about this more than Lewis did? 251
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 19/09/2026When I first read Lewis as a young teenager, I thought he had amazing insight into the human condition. Reading him again in my thirties, I wonder if what is actually going on is that my particular vulnerabilities to temptation are rather like his. (Possibly a bit of both to be fair.) 030
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Wow! a brilliant achievement, and clearly testament to some creative thinking and a lot of will towards mutual aid (and still: only achievable because Covid!) 140

Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Well quite, so I thought it worth making the point that the space and money they have is largely taken up with doing what they're for! 110
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Would that be superable (to coin a word)? Yes. But not easily and not in a way that doesn't leave the institution vulnerable. And institutions don't like being vulnerable. 010
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 16/09/2026And - a problem I ran up against in a previous life - colleges are full of vulnerable adults, and have a genuine requirement to safeguard those vulnerable adults, which makes it prohibitively complicated to use their estate for refugees/ asylum seekers/ local homeless people. 240
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Cf still more local asylum centres: it is genuinely challenging to say 'I don't want this here because it's treating people like animals and that's wrong' without its being elided with 'I don't want the nice place I live/ work to be full of asylum seekers.' 1130
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 15/09/2026People!! I guess one of the things to think about is what's behind the question. In my context it's often that change in church and non-church settings mean people feel disenfranchised from life in general, and pin that on 'easy' things to blame like clergy or hymnody. 120
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 15/09/2026(also, while introducing a new hymn should be done carefully, when a 'new' hymn has been sung several times a year for five years, it is no longer reasonably for people to say they've never heard it before in their lives...) 161
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I had a complaint a bit ago that I chose hymns which the complainer (aged 70+) 'didn't sing when he was a boy chorister'. Sometimes people don't realise that unless you only ever sing 20 hymns, not everyone is going to be super familiar with all of them all the time. 250
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 14/09/202614 Sept - the long awaited @cdjtheology.bsky.social book, as excellent and thought-provoking as we all expected. Particularly appreciated the emphasis that 'one of the effects of sacramental practice is to reveal the full extent of the destruction wrought by the powers of sin and death.' 120
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 12/09/2026I bought a navy blue velvet fedora my first year of university, and someone stole it from the English department. Possibly a lucky escape. 000
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Yes, and, 'further up and further in' still gives me chills. 020
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Yes. Absolutely this. I read it at eleven, it was so clearly true, and everything I have done since has been a gloss on it. 010

Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 04/09/2026(sorry - if tone didn't work, was *not* saying you're wrong, just that it was still a thing less than two decades ago. Which have been a pretty important two decades in understanding safeguarding. I doubt there's anyone living in and seeing undergrads in their set now.) 020
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 04/09/2026My Director of Studies (m. 2005) lived in his large set at Trinity. Supervisions in the office-cum-living-room, with his bedroom off it. Granted this was unusual by then, but he wasn't the only one. 110
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 04/09/2026I mean, I would say the distance between coffee in a public cafe and an intimate relationship was reasonably significant, but what do I know? 010
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 04/09/2026It's probably an institutional policy response to recent changes in SG legislation. 110
Phil White @revdphilippa.bsky.social · 04/09/2026AFAIK it's *recommended* to do 1:1s in public cafes! (Which makes pastoral ministry kind of tricky.) 150
