Cardinal Robert Barron, bishop of the Diocese of Winona–Rochester in Minnesota, made a prophetic comment last week to the press — under Trump, America is in political decline.
"Cardinal George of Chicago, of happy memory, was one of my great mentors, and he said: 'Look, until America goes into political decline, there won't be an American pope.' And his point was, if America is kind of running the world politically, culturally, economically, they don't want America running the world religiously. So, I think there's some truth to that, that we're such a superpower and so dominant, they don't wanna give us, also, control over the church."

I’ve installed the ‘make america kittens again’ extention, so that any pictures of Trump are replaced with cute pictures of cats. Which led to this beautiful conjunction on bbc news for me today:
A cardboard box with five orange and white kittens, above the headline “Secret UK ‘Mini cabinet’ tries to plan for unpredictable Trump”

How I’m feeling about 20 January (h/t to our long-suffering cat Blit, who had to wear this cone for three weeks)

Today I pressed at the Eucharist at @stbenetscam.bsky.social on the 20th Anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. Deo gratias! “In all that you do, you are to nourish Christ’s people from the riches of his grace, and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and in the life to come.”

St Ben’t’s @stbenetscam.bsky.social (named after St Benedict, but w/ extra apostrophes) was for many years under the care of friars of the Society of St Francis. Hence our icon of Francis and Benedict. I’ve been reliably informed that the icon is fondly known as Frankie & Benny.
Close up of an icon of St Francis (on the left, in brown robes and holding a red Bible) and St Benedict (in white and black Benedictine robes, holding the rule of St Benedict.

Evening on the Kama River, in historic Kyoto. Emperor Shirakawa wrote of three unmanageable things: Shei (armed monks), dice, and the water of the Kamo River. Today the river is tamed and we watched herons, black Kites, egrets, and ducks flying overhead in the heart of Kyoto.
