Plus plenty of well-polished implementations of more “standard” graphics, like bubble scatters, small multiple time trends, and stacked areas. dhan1004.github.io/flight-on-ti... lilangeluh.github.io/nba-narrative/ anna-murphy.github.io/DATA1500/ ciarameyer.github.io/data1500/
A bubble scatterplot showing how average delays are while taxing from vs. to the gate, at different top airports.A small multiple area chart showing how every position in the NBA has seen three-point attempts surge since 2011.Small multiple scatters + rolling average showing the relatively flat CPU and GPU utilization of Oscar, Brown’s supercomputer.A stacked area chart showing average monthly attendance for PWHL teams, and the impact of adding two expansion teams in 2025-26.

This creativity extended to mapping as well, including a bivariate choropleth(!) and a Spilhaus projection (!!). awang1245.github.io/birder-watch... skylarwalters.github.io/whaling-in-ri/
A U.S.-county map showing which parts of the countries have the most observations in the eBird database, compared with income levels.A map showing whaling trips that originated in Rhode Island, using a special map projection that splits up land instead of the ocean.

A particularly creative year for chart forms, including a thematic design around stratovolcanoes, a radial line chart, a festival-poster viz, and a timeline of WTA number ones. yichenli95.github.io/Volcano/ form41.jero.zone brwangenheim.github.io atansakul.github.io/the-road-to-...
A bar chart showing which types of volcanos are the most lethal, but the bars are illustrated volcanos. Stratovolcanoes are the deadliest.A radial line chart showing monthly air passenger travel by year and month, and the huge impact of covid.A visualization designed to look like posters for the Outside Lands festival in 2008, 2017 and 2026, highlighting how “far from their peak” each act was.A timeline showing all the tennis players who have been #1 in WTA rankings since the 80s.

Rhode Island folks! If you're interested in the intersection of data, journalism, and art, come listen to me moderate a talk with @suryamattu.com at RISD on Thursday, March 5, at 6:30pm.
A poster giving details for a lecture by artist and data journalist Surya Mattu. The event will take place at 6:30pm on March 5, in College Building (yes that's the official name) room 412.

Unbelievably thankful for all the wonderful people I worked with on the graphics team. The Post also gave me rope to produce lighthearted work, like a showcase of newspapers created by kids during Covid. As a start a new job, here's a headline from one of them that’s become a bit of a mantra.
A children's newspaper that has a hand-drawn headline: HARD WORK FOR JUICY BERRIES.

After nearly eight years at The Washington Post, I’m on to something new. This week I started as the Senior Data Editor on the recently formed Data Services team at Yahoo News. Excited to help build something from the ground up!

One of my favorite stories I've gotten to edit recently: Can YOU spot which of these actors are wearing wigs? Come for the quiz, stay for the in-depth interviews and diagrams! www.washingtonpost.com/entertainmen...
