I love what Tauri has done, a lightweight version of Electron, where you author the backend code in Rust. But while I love Rust, I do not love it for app building, and I wanted to have that HTML-model for programming but available in Swift. 1/2

What's the biggest barrier to adoption for startups hoping to use atproto as a differentiator?

Alec Larson @retropragma.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
This means the "10x better" rule still applies. Competitors can't steal your users unless they're providing legitimate value that you don't.

But the threat of competition goes both ways. Yes, your data moat is non-existent. But that also makes it less appealing to copy you straight up, since the copycat will also have no data moat.

That's kind of the revolutionary thing about atproto. It puts users before businesses. Data lock-in may be a good business model, but it's hostile to users.

The natural consequence of a two party system. I hope everyone who votes red or blue is embarrassed about legitimizing a broken, corrupt system

what's the closest thing to an "Astro lite" the ideal would be a Vite plugin that renders .astro files with limited runtime features... but i'm open to "Astro-like" templating engines that are lightweight

I believe that React Hooks' complexity stems from having no run-once "setup" scope. Ofc, there are workarounds, but they're clunky. While hooks gain some reactive power in being unavoidably a part of rerenders, Remix 3 makes us wonder if that's worth the squeeze.

we don't just have economic inequality, we have cognitive inequality - systematically different mental operating systems that make cross-class solidarity extraordinarily difficult to achieve.

a bit too mechanical/lifeless description for me 😀 at their best, apps are superpowers that provide us new, valuable ways to see and interact with the world around us, or literally give us life by saving us time

also love how VSCode either pukes large types at you with no syntax highlighting or collapsibility, or it truncates them at random places to the point of uselessness.

Someone will eventually share a reproduction. Just tag it as "reproduction needed" in the meantime.

Alec Larson @retropragma.bsky.social · 16/07/2025
I reject the idea that a bug report should be auto-closed if it doesn't have a reproduction. Reporting an issue is a good way to gauge its severity by allowing others to thumbs it up, so friction should be as minimal as possible.
