Finally got to get my hands on an American Sears Wish Book! Very similar to our UK Argos catalogues but with loads of US sports merch and a few other niche differences too. Love it.

Was away on a business trip abroad and stumbled across a cool little vintage shop. They had a bunch of old magazines. This one on the top of the pile had a feature on War Games so I obviously had to buy it!

I've been really getting into baseball this last year. Started watching the Ken Burns documentary. It's so good. But (to show off my new baseball vernacular) at 18+ hours, it really is 'Inside Baseball' isn't it?

@paxholley.com I know it's not a novelization but have you read the original William Goldman novel of The Princess Bride? I just picked it up.

What an experience to get to meet @bizarrojimmyolsen.bsky.social So good to catch-up with you Evan and share some great chat and some great whisky. Safe onward travels my friend. I've met Mike Downs before so I'm slowly ticking off my fourth chair army. ❤️

Post a comic cover you love. For me it always has to be this one. Avengers #118. I love the composition and the characters but it just brings me so much nostalgia too as it was the second comic I owned as a kid.

Was so excited to get my childhood hi-fi stereo hooked up again, including minidisc player. Always considered that a cool technology. Got lots of LPs, tapes and CDs, but shocked to find out that minidiscs on eBay range from about £50-£300! Looks like I'll be playing my 3 mixtape minidiscs on repeat!

I've watched all the Final Destinations with my son this Halloween and we have thoroughly enjoyed them. 1-4 are almost identical, but in a good way. 5 was the only one that was slightly under par. But 6 from this year was so good. Easily our favourite.

Saw Jaws in the cinema for the first time tonight. IMAX to be exact, with my son, for its 50th anniversary. A classic. And I'm always impressed how Roy Scheider opens a bottle of wine the hard way during a long take.

Major bucket list fulfilled. I've always loved LA rock history. Read biographies of GnR and The Doors etc. Heard all about the legendary venues like the Whisky A Go Go, the Troubadour, Rainbow Bar & Grill, The Roxy and the Viper Room. I got to go into them all last night! And even Canters Deli. ❤️

Enjoying a few food firsts during my stay in America. A Waffle House biscuit (a biscuit is something very different in the UK), cheese grits (I never knew what these were, and still don't) and also a Slim Jim (well it had a picture of the Macho Man on it, so I couldn't not).

BlueSky has started allowing notifications? Fantastic! I will definitely start using BlueSky more from now on. I had previously been using Twitter purely through lists and notifications to cut through all the noise. Couldn't really even handle BlueSky without that.

I just discovered that @geekmentality.bsky.social has a Slash Horror podcast. How have I missed this!!! I have been educating my son about slashers since Halloween. This podcast is perfect for me right now. From one Mikey to another, thank you Mikey! Any plans to cover Friday 13th or Scream?

What’s behind the final door, no.24 of the Retromash Readvent Calendar? It has to be. The classic ‘The Night Before Christmas’. I have read this every Christmas Eve of my life. First is my own children’s version which has great art. And below that is my childhood one. Amazing.

1101

Retromash Mikey @retromash.bsky.social · 23/12/2024

What’s behind door no.23? In the UK we had annuals being released every Christmas. For every comic and TV show imaginable. Hardback, roughly A4 size. Often with drawn comic strips, full page photos, behind the scenes info and games and puzzles. These things were great, especially at Christmas.

What’s behind door no.22? Swipe to find out. I absolutely love these Marvel Handbooks. It was hard to collect them all and they are a treasured collection. They are super informative and the art is just incredible. Check out the random characters below that they even make look cool!

What’s behind door no.21? Swipe to find out. Asterix. I absolutely love the Asterix books. Always have, always will. I love the art, the stories, the names. I’ve managed to collect every book over the years. I would love to add some original Uderzo art for my wall one day.

What’s behind door no.20 of the Retromash Readvent Calendar? Swipe to find out. I was hugely into the WWF back in the late 80s and early 90s. This magazine was great. It felt very glossy and professional. And man, those merchandise pages are sublime. I still want that Macho King tee.

Retromash Mikey @retromash.bsky.social · 19/12/2024

What’s behind door no.19? Ladybird books again but He-Man this time! I devoured anything He-Man related when I was younger and these books were great. Some pretty good stories in there actually. I’ll take this opportunity to show some other great modern MOTU books, especially the Dark Horse ones.

What’s behind door no.18? Following on from Cinefex yesterday, here is the book that sparked my whole love for movie magic. The Art of Star Wars. Incredible book. Also got the Empire version too. And I can’t mention these without also showing the superb ILM book too. Loved these so much as a kid.

What’s behind door no.17? When I was about 10 I got into movie special effects & visual effects. It seemed like magic to me, but also an art and craft. I was in awe and it was what I wanted to do when I grew up. I loved Cinefex. It made you feel like you were getting VIP access.

Retromash Mikey @retromash.bsky.social · 16/12/2024

What’s behind door no.16? Swipe to find out. —— Red Dwarf was huge in the UK. Especially in the early years. Such an innovative property with an amazing cast. It was great when the writing duo wrote a combined book. And since then three more books, combined and individually. Smegging great.

150

Retromash Mikey @retromash.bsky.social · 15/12/2024

What’s behind door no.15? Swipe to find out. In Scotland there’s a tradition of having an Oor Wullie or The Broons collection released every Christmas, alternating between them. You can’t get much more Scottish than these comic strips. I believe they are still going strong too.

121

Retromash Mikey @retromash.bsky.social · 14/12/2024

What’s behind door no.14? Swipe to find out! Movie novelisations! I’ve always loved the concept of these. You often get extra plot or character info fleshed out. Sometimes deleted scenes are included because the author was working off an earlier script. A great way to enjoy a movie even more.

Watched Friday the 13th Part III for the first time today. Delighted to find out that it was a 3D film! I love 3D third movies. The titles were incredible and the gratuitous 3D shots throughout the film were just wonderful. I’ve got a 3D TV so I definitely now want to buy the 3D DVD version!
