When an unidentified vessel approached at high speed, likely a Libyan asset, survivors panicked and tried to scramble aboard NADIR to escape a forced interception. Once aboard our ship, they received showers, food, water, and first aid. All could safely disembark in Lampedusa. 📷 RESQSHIP

On Tuesday morning, our NADIR crew responded to a distress alert from @alarmphone.bsky.social and eventually located 19 people on a drifting, deflating rubber boat, including 9 male and 3 female minors. With no lifejackets and water entering, our crew initiated an immediate evacuation.

They were all very exhausted after having been stranded on the abandoned platform for 1.5 days. During the crossing to Lampedusa many suffered from severe seasickness and fever. Before sunset, NADIR passed an empty, unmarked rubber boat without engine. 📷 Roberta Derosas | RESQSHIP

On Friday, our NADIR crew answered an @alarmphone.bsky.social Mayday Relay for ca. 50 people stranded on the abandoned Didon oil platform. Sailidarity's AMA crew had stabilised the situation, allowing for NADIR's crew to directly evacuate 54 men, including 6 minors.

Our crew stabilised the situation, distributed life jackets, and checked for medical emergencies before evacuating everyone onto NADIR for water, dry clothes, thermal blankets, and food. By morning, NADIR reached Lampedusa, where all 16 survivors disembarked safely. 📷 Roberta Derosas | RESQSHIP

The vessel was severely overcrowded with 16 people: 15 unaccompanied minors and a 19-year-old pregnant woman. Departing from Az-Zawiya, Libya, over two days prior, their engine had failed, the tubes were partially deflated, and the boat was taking on water.

Thursday night, our crew aboard NADIR was alerted by @alarmphone.bsky.social to a distress case in the Maltese SAR zone. Factoring in wind and current drift, the team began searching for a 5-meter black rubber boat lost in pitch-black darkness.

Once aboard, our crew provided first aid, thermal blankets, and a warm dinner. An hour after the evacuation, a Libyan speedboat approached NADIR, then veered south again.

On Tuesday afternoon, our crew located a boat on radar: 13 people (aged 15–30, incl. 3 minors) in distress in a partly deflated rubber boat, exhausted after departing Libya a day earlier. Water was entering the vessel. The crew provided life vests, drinking water, and evacuated everyone onto NADIR.

The ever-new forms of crude violence against people seeking protection shock us every single time, yet come as no surprise. Deterrence is built into the EU border regime, leading actors to devise ever newer and more violent methods – without facing consequences.

The survivors had been subjected to extreme violence. At departure, all 8 men were unknowingly forced into a tiny, lidded box at gunpoint for the 4–5 hour crossing. All showed physical evidence of beatings and were terrified by the severe intimidation experienced.

While running search patterns Sunday night, the NADIR crew heard a boat, screams, and dull splashes as the vessel sped away. 8 people in deep distress were swimming towards our ship. The crew deployed Centifloats and pulled everyone directly onboard. No one appears to be missing.

Heading north, NADIR responded to a distress alert from @alarmphone involving ~30 people. Our crew only found an empty, unmarked rubber boat. We assume an illegal interception occurred.

More scLCG vessels arrived and encircled NADIR as our ship set course north. Earlier that day, NADIR had already been shadowed – by even up to four vessels at once.

RESQSHIP @resqship.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
At that moment, a so-called Libyan Coast Guard (scLCG) speedboat approached aggressively into the 10m gap between NADIR & the platform, where the tender crew had already initiated the evacuation. Tension mounted over a forced takeover.

❗️ NADIR evacuation encircled by Libyan assets Yesterday, NADIR spotted 5 people stranded on the abandoned Tunisian oil platform Didon. After notifying authorities, our crew launched the tender to bring all survivors aboard.

The past weeks once again exposed the deadly reality of Fortress Europe's borders – and exactly why we continue our work at sea. An intense three-week rotation is coming to an end, but NADIR will return to the #CentralMed in early September. 📷 RESQSHIP, Camille Martin Juan | SOS MEDITERRANEE

Libyan militia assets were present at sea multiple times – a stark reminder of EU-financed illegal interceptions. Survivors told our crew of the hell and torture they endured in Libya, sharing that their greatest fear during the crossing was being forcibly returned there.

Among the 36 survivors who safely embarked NADIR were 18 unaccompanied minors. Many of the people were severely exhausted, dehydrated, and in need of medical care. Italian authorities designated Lampedusa as the port of safety, where all survivors could disembarked safely the same day.

On Monday afternoon, our NADIR crew spotted 36 people in distress on an overcrowded, leaking rubber boat following an alert by @alarmphone.bsky.social. Supported by @sosmediterranee.org's Albatross 1, we notified authorities, handed out life vests, and safely evacuated everyone on board.

The search was called off after the Coast Guard evacuated everyone. Early Tuesday morning, our crew spotted 36 people without life jackets on an unmanoeuvrable, grey rubber boat taking on water. Due to the danger, our crew swiftly evacuated everyone, including ca. 20 minors.

On Monday afternoon, our crew joined a commemoration in Lampedusa for the people whose bodies were sighted since the weekend. That same evening, NADIR set sail again and initiated the search for a distress case reported by @alarmphone.bsky.social: 31 people on an overcrowded rubber boat.

Our crew is left with profound grief and anger over these preventable tragedies. The recent frequency of such sightings makes us fear further unrecorded shipwrecks. These days show once again, with painful clarity, how closely life and death are intertwined at Europe’s borders. 📷 RESQSHIP

Update Operation 6 Our 6th crew assisted 32 people in distress at sea. Meanwhile, headlines fixated on a "surge of arrivals" in Ceuta, feeding narratives that justify more militarisation and border control, instead of asking why people are forced to take such risks in the first place.

For most of the group, who left Somalia as minors, this was the culmination of a two-year journey. All five faced imprisonment in Libyan detention centres and hard labor to fund this single crossing attempt, knowing failure meant being trapped in Libya or facing death.

This "emergency" is intentional, designed to make daily deaths at sea acceptable. Instead of weaponising border security, we must dismantle the root causes driving forced migration and hold those in power accountable. 📷 Jelka Kretzschmar, Jan Salmen | RESQSHIP

While this is the daily reality in the Mediterranean, media coverage is currently fixated on arrivals in Ceuta. They push emergency narratives that serve to justify further militarisation, deterrence, and border controls – while ignoring why people are forced to take extreme risks.
