What frustrates me with this discourse is that there’s a sense that all these things exist on a spectrum of badness, and “genocide” is the worst thing on that spectrum, and therefore we should all call it that. This was decided very early on in Israel’s invasion of Gaza, too.

I’m not sure if it’s genocide or not; it seems distinct from other genocides in that it’s largely a military campaign being prosecuted with utter disregard for the life of the people in Gaza. It’s also clear that Israel’s leaders regard every dead Palestinian as a problem solved.

My consistent position on this - back to 2023 - is that I think the campaign against Gaza is unconscionable, it includes numerous unambiguous war crimes, and is a moral atrocity. I think the definition of “genocide” is complex and includes questions of intent that I can’t answer so I avoid the term.

The thing is, using this graphic, what happened in Gaza clearly wasn’t a genocide. There was no campaign against an internal class of “vermin” and there’s no wholesale elimination. This graphic doesn’t really offer a coherent definition of genocide at all

You actually need explanations for why things like “The intentional fire bombing of a city, killing tens of thousands of people and destroying it almost completely,” like happened in Germany or Japan, are not genocide, as no one seems to believe they are. And they’re not trivial to come up with.
