European Democracy Is Eroding
Watchdogs identified a deterioration of democratic space in Italy, Germany, and France last year. Using so-called emergency security measures, the EU’s leading states are squashing the right to dissen...

The relatively short and unremorseful note appeared to lament the probe that the late child sex offender was facing at the time. It offered quips about his plans to end his life, saying it was ‘a treat’ to choose ‘one’s time to say goodbye’. ft.trib.al/rdzHg7L

3/3 The argument would be stronger if it focused on human capacities, not institutions. Those capacities aren’t produced by universities—and if they’re not already developed, university won’t magically create them. This reads less like insight, more like a defense of privilege.

2/3 Framing this as a triumph of “liberal arts education” feels like status laundering. It conveniently elevates elite cultural credentials while downplaying technical and manual work—despite the fact that judgment exists across all kinds of labor, not just prestigious ones.

1/3 If you think the “AI age” will suddenly make judgment, interpretation, and critical thinking valuable—but ignore that these are built in early education—you’re missing the point. By university, most of that foundation is already unevenly set. This isn’t a higher ed problem.

11/ The idea that “the brilliant thrive while the average suffer” depends entirely on how we define brilliance. If brilliance simply means compromat and money at any cost, then the statement says more about the values of the system than about genuine human achievement.

12/ And yet, astonishingly, many of the institutions and actors promoting these visions receive public subsidies, tax advantages, and political support — while presenting themselves as visionaries or saviors of the future. This us so #EpsteinClass

10/ Another romantic claim is that Americans explore the unknown without concern for profit. In reality, most technological exploration today is tightly bound to financial incentives and corporate competition.

9/ The Epstein class wont admit AI systems are tools trained on vast amounts of human-created data.

8/ One comparison often used in this discourse claims that AI relates to humanity the way a child relates to its mother — nourished by the “sum of all our thoughts.” But this metaphor is misleading. Children are human beings with agency and moral standing.

7/ Meanwhile, in both the United States and China, AI is already widely used for surveillance, monitoring, and behavioral control.

6/ Funding for philosophy, art, and research can sometimes help normalize this idea: that humans should simply adapt to technologies they neither govern nor fully understand.

5/ We are told humanity will have to “coexist” with new forms of intelligence that could be indifferent or even predatory. Framed this way, the public is encouraged to accept systems that are opaque, uncontrollable, and difficult to question

4/. This essay even ask: “Is that what evolution feels like?” Perhaps not. It may instead feel like regression — a gradual weakening of human autonomy while technological systems expand their influence over everyday life.

3/ That is a very large assertion when “intelligence” itself remains poorly defined and current AI systems still fail outside narrow tasks.

2/ Institutions like the Berggruen Institute frequently frame these ideas as philosophical progress. But many of the assumptions behind this narrative are questionable. One recurring claim is that humans will soon not be the only intelligence on Earth.

This isn’t about morality, “depravity,” or class. The Epstein files aren’t about elite vibes or status—they’re about criminal behavior. Framing it as a cultural or moral scandal is distracting. The real issue is crime, victims, and accountability.

this magazine frames a “planetary nervous system” as care and wisdom — but it’s a soft sell for expanding sensors, data pipelines, AI models, and “decision systems” that someone owns and controls. Noema’ publisher Nicolas Berggruen is linked to Epstein’s network and their agenda

He wrongly puts monopolies on the same level as state-led research in driving innovation. You can’t compare them. Markets alone don’t produce breakthroughs, but his monopoly example is an outlier. The real engine of major innovation has always been public research.

We don’t need anything new to fight misinformation — the answer’s long known: education. Not job training or test prep, but learning to think, question authority, and resist manipulation. The founders knew it already. No need to reinvent the wheel.

2. Peter Thiel’s Political Playbook: How a Silicon Valley Contrarian Reputedly Tries to Bend Society

Thank you ever so much for this shining act of generosity and philanthropy. Truly, where would the world be without your opinion — and your impeccable timing when it comes to tax deductions? It’s heartening to see how seamlessly public virtue aligns with private benefit and self-investment.

Another Noema piece — same act, new costume. A “magazine of ideas” that’s really a mouthpiece for its owner’s investments in AI and synthetic biology. Ethics as décor, propaganda as prose, and a tax break on top. A fraud wrapped in philosophy.

The real AI divide isn’t freedom vs. control. It’s public protection vs. private exploitation. China regulates to guard citizens; Silicon Valley deregulates to expose them — then sells the harm back as “innovation” and “progress.”

Bratton’s “European AI” piece reads like a libertarian-accelerationist remix of the Techno-Optimist Manifesto: deregulation as courage, critique as weakness, elite control as realism. It’s Peter Thiel politics in philosophical drag.

The Institute Berggruen’s staffing and fellowships often look like rewards to allies, political contacts, or high-profile figures, rather than genuine peer-reviewed merit.

As it is, the Institute functions less like a think tank and more like a clubhouse for the powerful, recycling wealth into influence without real accountability.

If the Berggruen Institute becomes more transparent and grounded in serious work, it can recover credibility. If it stays opaque, based on elite circuits, and prestige-driven, the public’s criticisms will only grow sharper.
