Rewatched The Cell on Arrow's new 4K Blu-ray. The old transfer buried Tarsem Singh's visuals. This one shows everything. The sliced-up horse is still moving. Watch its ears. zurl.co/YhSBY #TheCell #4K

A ★★★★½ review of The Cell (2000)
I’ve been trying to rewatch The Cell for forever. Every attempt ended the same way. The old HD transfer was just too muddy on a 65” 4K TV, so it buried the one thing you watch this movie for: the visuals. I kept shutting it off and waiting for the 4K restoration. And recently, Arrow Films delivered. Their new 4K restoration fixes all my issues. They scanned the original 35mm camera negative, director Tarsem Singh and cinematographer Paul Laufer approved the work, and the resolution is phenomenal. I felt like I was seeing parts of this movie for the first

"I will rip your soul out you pathetic fuck." The Evil Dead remake could be a litmus test for true fans of the horror genre. Us fans would grin and laugh gleefully at most of the goriest scenes because a) most are truly unique and different than what we've scene before, and b) we've seen EVERYTHING before. Anybody else would shut their eyes, grimace, flee the theater, or just wouldn't go. It's not that horror fans are just gore junkies. Blood, gore and violence are irrelevant and tedious if it's not weaved into a captivating story with decent acting, great

A ★★★★ review of The Ruins (2008)
Some movies hit different when you've lived a version of them. Last night I ran a double feature, Hostel: Part II followed by The Ruins, and came out the other side of this having dug up things I’ve been wrestling with over the last few years. My ex-wife and I honeymooned in the Mayan Riviera back in the 1990s. We visited the actual Maya ruins near Tulum on the Caribbean coast, as well as the fantastic Chichen Itza. The movie's Mexico setup, sun-bleached and gorgeous but quietly off from the first frame, maps onto that trip in ways that bring

A ★★★★½ review of Hostel: Part II (2007)
In my review of the original Hostel I commented that it didn’t age well for me, but the culprit isn't the torture scenes. It's the over-sexed American Pie-style douchebags who leer at every woman on screen. Hostel: Part II fixes that almost entirely. Eli Roth writes women this time, and he doesn't embarrass himself in the process. The banter between the three female leads felt so natural and grounded that I wondered if he let the actresses improvise. Either way, it's a genuine upgrade. I was living in Shanghai when this dropped in 2007, deep in a midlife crisis and

Luke: "I’m not afraid." Yoda: "You will be." After decades of rewatching the original Star Wars trilogy, I realize that George Lucas has a serious dark side himself. Binging these back-to-back, he has more horror-adjacent themes and scenes than is typical in a sci-fi fantasy film. Don't get me wrong. Some of my favorite fantasy and sci-fi are horror-adjacent (Conan, The Lord of the Rings, Annihilation, etc.). But Lucas' "family-friendly" PG movies aren't as family-friendly as many might think. This is, without a doubt, the best film in the franchise. Luckily, most people agree with that. I came into The

Hokum got a rare theater watch from me. If you've been following the comment drama I've been having the last few, it's been what's becoming a common "OMG, Repo said what?!?" set of overreactions by others and, to be fair, from me as well. Then ArchStanton returned from a long hiatus, gushing about this, so I said, "Fuck it, I need a mental health break. I'm going to drag my lazy ass out of my man cave head to ... da movies!" I had fun going back to the theater, and I had fun with Hokum. But I'm conflicted. Parts

A ★★★½ review of Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
I've been rewatching the Fast and Furious series in order, and the Fast & Furious 6 is the film where the series completely jumps the shark. The first hour is a blast. Shaw's flip car is one of the most satisfying pieces of practical stunt engineering the franchise has ever put on screen. It's a real wedge chassis with a rear-mounted LS3 V8, four-wheel steering, and a spatula nose built to get under bumpers and throw cars. Multiple units were used in actual crashes. My brain knew it was over the top, but my gut felt the crunch of the metal,

About halfway through Fast Five, I thought to myself, "This is people's favorite in the franchise?" I was sitting at four stars when a few things happened. First is the family dinner scene. This is a franchise that spent four movies talking about family like it's a bumper sticker slogan, and here it pays off. The crew's assembled, but this time, there are real stakes, and for just a few minutes, the movie slows down and breathes. A ★★★★½ review of The Wolverine (2013)
The Wolverine was released during a stretch of my life when I was grinding through the process of getting my Chinese girlfriend's green card so she could move from Shanghai to the U.S. Back then, anything Asian on screen hit a nerve, escalated with Hollywood doing a ton of collaboration with China. While Japan and China are very different countries and cultures, they share enough “DNA” that movies like The Wolverine seemed to almost glitter for me at times, like Edward in Twilight. A ★★★½ review of X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
A funny thing happened during my rewatch of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I went in with very low expectations expecting to hate it, given my patchy memory of previous watches, mostly due to low-rated reviews from mutuals here and the constant trolling Ryan Reynolds gives this across the first two Deadpool movies. I found this to be a very entertaining film, if you can stomach its obvious faults. And there are faults aplenty. The CGI claws look like something that escaped a video game cutscene. After coming off the high of Boogie Nights, my highly anticipated watch of Magnolia was a bit of a letdown. Don’t get me wrong, its clearly a masterclass in filmmaking. I recognize what Paul Thomas Anderson accomplished here, and he clearly poured his heart into the script. It’s obvious how personal this was for him, and it rightfully triggered in my own mind the sudden death of my father 10 years ago. But I found myself struggling to stay engaged until the third act. Boogie Nights gave us Dirk Diggler as a throughline. We ride with him up, watch him

A list of 10 films compiled on Letterboxd, including Hereditary (2018), Evil Dead (2013), The Thing (1982), Alien (1979) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). About this list: There's a certain kind of horror film that works like comfort food. They aren't easy watches for those who aren't jaded horror fans. Most of them are deeply disturbing and relentlessly bleak. But when a horror film is made with total mastery, when the craft is so complete that your brain just surrenders to it, something strange happens. You trust it. You embrace it like a toddler's teddy bear. You can fall peacefully asleep to it. You come back to it the way other people come back to a favorite meal. These ten films are the ones I return to most. High rewatchability and that specific feeling of being in completely capable hands, even when those hands are doing terrible things to the characters on screen.

It's been a while since I revisited the X-Men movies. Kevin Feige has been taking his sweet time rebooting one of my favorite comics from back in the day, and it’s the first superhero movie series that didn't involve Batman or Superman (not counting Blade, as that’s a different beast altogether). The most surprising thing about this rewatch is that this is kind of an origin story for Kevin Feige, which I had no idea about before. The casting is stupidly good. But watching this close out the whole run made me realize it’s my favorite of the bunch, even beating out the original. My original review still holds. A ★★★★ review of Beverly Hills Cop III (1994)
Before I put on Beverly Hills Cop III, Ledley asked me to be nice in my review because it's a big nostalgia burger for him. That ended up completely rejiggering my expectations. Given its low rating, conventional wisdom would say I’d have a similar take. Measured against the first two films, it’s a big letdown. John Landis was directing his first Axel Foley movie with a star with whom he'd publicly torched his relationship. The script went through multiple darker drafts before landing on "Die Hard at a theme park." The studio clipped the wings off anything that might've made

A ★★★½ review of Beverly Hills Cop II (1987)
For some reason, I thought I liked Beverly Hills Cop II better than the original, but that is not the case at all. I can see where the false memory came from. Tony Scott took over directing duties from Martin Brest, and you feel the upgrade immediately. The opening heist, “Shakedown” by Bob Seger blasting over helicopters and long lenses, is pure Top Gun energy redirected for a cop movie. Scott came into this off The Hunger and Top Gun, and years of shooting UK commercials before that, and every frame of Beverly Hills Cop II has his iconic fingerprints

Full disclosure: I'm not a big fan of Westerns.
