Maryland has a shortage of nearly 100K affordable rentals, as well as a shortage of protections for renters. If we want to ensure that all MDers have access to affordable 🏠 we need to boost eviction prevention $, pass Good Cause Eviction legislation, + block anticipated bills to speed up evictions.

As more federal cuts loom, advocates for tenants, landlords, builders all have ideas on what needs to be done." by Danielle J. Brown Jan 1, 2026.

Thank you @govwesmoore.bsky.social for getting the funding for eviction and homelessness prevention for families with children in community schools out the door! As Gov. Moore says, few things are more important to a child's growth and development than a safe, stable home.
A screenshot of a Department of Housing and Community Development press release with a "sticker" over the corner that says "progress!"

The press release reads: Governor Moore Announces Funding for Eviction and Homelessness Prevention Through Community Schools Rental Assistance Program

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore today announced that applications are open for the Community Schools Rental Assistance Program in eight local jurisdictions. Families and students who are enrolled in Community Schools in these jurisdictions while experiencing homelessness or at risk for housing instability can apply for emergency financial support through the program.

“Few things are more important to a child’s growth and development than a safe, stable home. The Community Schools Rental Assistance Program will help vulnerable students and their families threatened with housing instability keep a roof over their heads,” said Gov. Moore. “This is a collaborative, interagency initiative that brings together housing supports, educators, and community partners in order to bolster our administration’s mission of ending child poverty.”

The Community Schools Rental Assistance Program was created by Senate Bill 370 / House Bill 428 and signed into law by Governor Moore in 2024. In consultation with the Maryland State Department of Education and the Governor’s Office on Children, program funding is administered to local grantees by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

below the headline of the article, there is a photo of two tents in a grassy area.A screenshot of a story in the baltimore banner - the headline reads 'Twice as many Baltimoreans needed an emergency shelter in the last 2 years'

the quote from the story says "The number of people using Baltimore’s emergency shelter system for overnight stays has doubled in the last two years, the latest city data shows, and Baltimore’s homeless services director is pointing the blame at two main culprits: A loss of funding designed to prevent evictions and the soaring costs of renting and owning a home.

More people in Baltimore experienced homelessness for the first time in 2024 compared to the year before, the data shows. And Baltimore is roughly half as successful at placing people in housing as the national average."

Renters United MD & MD Eviction Prevention Funds Alliance sent a letter urging @govwesmoore.bsky.social, Sen President Bill Ferguson & Speaker Adrienne Jones to reverse a proposed cut to eviction prevention funds in the budget & restore $10M in funding. rentersunitedmaryland.org/eviction-pre... 1/2
Dear Governor Moore, Senate President Ferguson, and House Speaker Jones: Don't cut eviction prevention funding in half!

MEPFA: Maryland Eviction Prevention Funds Alliance; Renters United MarylandEviction prevention funds (emergency rental assistance) pay 1-3 months of past-due rent for families facing a short-term crisis -- ensuring a missed month's rent doesn't become a catalyst for homelessness.

In FY25, our state leaders allocated $10 million for eviction prevention funds, but have proposed cutting that in half -- $5 million -- in the FY26 budget. We understand that Maryland is facing a significant budget deficit, but cutting eviction prevention funding is not socially or fiscally responsible. Every dollar spent on eviction prevention saves the state $2.39, and by restoring full funding we could prevent the evictions of 3,747 families.
