Small "seed grants" can be very useful in specific situations, but can be hard to build on in the current context of consolidation of funding into enormous consortia. A blogpost on Sowing the seeds (which I cannot think without immediately breaking into […] [Original post on fediscience.org]

Using AI may make us lazy from disuse of our skills, but what if we never learned the skills in the first place? Skills we once had come back- like riding a bike- but what if our students rely on AI early in training? A blogpost on "never-skilling" and […] [Original post on akademienl.social]

Scientific writing, haiku form... People say dogs, cats Horses feel emotions but why not chicken joy? Based on a scoping review I'm working on covering human views of animal emotions. I may start all of my presentations now with haikus. #haiku #scicomm #academia

Cartoon with six boxes, titled "some grammatical voices for use in scientific writing". Active voice: Our team collected samples and then we tested them. Passive voice: samples were collected and tested. Passive-agressive voice: we did all the collecting and testing. No need to thank us. Just doing our job. Clickbait voice: We collected some samples... you won't belive what happened next! Haiku voice: Quiet science lab. Workers arrive with samples. The testing begins. Conspiracy voice: Mysterious "samples" were harvested and "tested" by so-called scientists.

The more conversations I have about the role of AI in academic education and research, the more I want to yell this poem at people. @academicchatter #HigherEd #writing #academia

JPG of a poem "For a student who used AI to write a paper" by Joseph Fasano

Now I let it fall back

in the grasses.

I hear you. I know

this life is hard now.

I know your days are precious

on this earth.

But what are you trying

to be free of?

The living? The miraculous

task of it?

Love is for the ones who love the work.

Posting this meme again after I made it on Mideval Memes while reading grants and reflecting on how wild it is to refer to to people in their 30's to 40's as Early Career. Academia is a patronizing place. Midieval memes on the other hand is great fun www.medievalmemes.org @academicchatter

Meme of Mideval painting with skeleton in the middle surrounded by people in orange pink robes. One has a finger up to the skeleton as if to say "no no no". Meme text "No no, you can't apply for that yet. At less than 10 years post-PhD yiu are an "Early Career/ junior" researcher.

I am still sometimes amazed at how creative people can be. The former coal gas factory in Amsterdam has been a cultural center for some time, and there is a digital art exhibition in it that is very, very cool. #Westergasfabriek #lumiere #Amsterdam #art

Photo of the inside of a factory hall, which is very very big. The hall is dark with art projected onto the walls, in the photo this all based on paintings by Manet. Not visible is that the art moves around and is kind of animated so the paintings change and morph. Every space in the walls and on the floor is covered in some kind of art during the exhibit. It is a very immersive and very cool experience.
