Although many squid species are bioluminescent, only a few octopus species are bioluminescent. The glowing sucker octopus (Stauroteuthis syrtensis) is one of those few species, and is the only known bioluminescent cirrate octopus. #OCTOtober

The Seven-armed octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) is a large octopus species, that as its name suggests, has eight arms! The reason it gets its name is that males have their hectocotylus (a specialized arm used for mating) curled up in a pouch, making it look like they only have seven arms #OCTOtober

The egg masses of the southern shortfin squid (Illex coindetii) resemble a metre wide cat's eye marbles. That's especially impressive when you remember that the largest female squid of this species had a mantle length of 37 cm. #SQUIDtember

Giant squid (Architeuthis dux) are the longest and the second largest squid species, with a mantle length of around 2 m. Although live giant squid weren't seen until the early 2000s, we've seen them alive plenty of times since. #SQUIDtember

Discoteuthis discus is a squid species that has been observed at most twice in its natural habitat. Both times we've seen, they have been doing weird poses. But because we have so few observations of this species, we have no idea if this is normal for them or not. #SQUIDtember

A juvenile Lesser Two-spot Octopus (Octopus bimaculoides) sitting on some brown kelp or sea weed. Most of its arms are curling down and back, with some going over the edge of the kelp. One arm in the centre is raised up and curling back up above its head. The octopus is very tiny and cute. It is light brown except for the underside of its arms which are off white. It has two alternating rows of suckers. It has some small bumps on its head and mantle, including a bump above its eye.

A Pale Octopus (Octopus pallidus) sitting on top of a pipe. The octopus is completely covering the opening of the pipe, with its arms and mantle hanging over the edge of the pipe. The octopus is perpendicular to the camera, and it almost looks as if its proud. It is brown, light brown, beige and yellow with its skin having a mosaic pattern. It has some small bumps and spikes. The pipe is vertical, and it is white and dark brown. There is some algae growing on it and cable halfway down that then bends down. Around the pipe is a sandy sea floor with patches of algae and sea grass, with anything further out being just blue from the water.

An Australian Giant Cuttlefish (Ascarosepion apama) floating, looking directly at the camera. There is lots of seaweed in the background, as well as some Australian Mado (Atypichthys strigatus) swimming it background. The cuttlefish has most of its arms hanging down in two clumps on either side, but its two centre arms are raised in front of its faces, with a wavy tip and a small gap between them, making them almost look like an evil genius or Mr Burns steepling and tapping their fingers. Vampire squids (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) don't really live up to their name. They aren't squids, and they don't hunt, let alone suck blood. But they are vampire-like in their longevity! They are thought to be able to live up to 10 years, longer than almost any other cephalopod!

A female Noury's Argonaut (Argonauta nouryi) being held by a person in an orange bucket. The octopus is in its "shell". The "shell" is actually an egg case and is white and bumpy. It forms a spiral shape but that is not visible in the photo. The photo is showing the opening where the octopus is. The octopus is a dark red, almost purple, colour with white flesh that just peeks out behind the chromatophores. It has most of its body in the "shell" and its arms are reaching backwards into the shell, exposing the bottom of its arms. The offset two rows of suckers are visible. Its eye is just peeking out from the shell on the left side, at it has a round pupil. On the front right, its siphon is poking out from between its arms and its opening its sort of shaped like a gridiron football, making it look a mouth. If you see the siphon as a mouth, it makes the octopus have a confused, dazed expression.
