I love that place! It had been awhile since I went but I dropped in after seeing a movie at the National Museum of Asian Art a few weeks ago. The ancient sea fossils have always been my favorites

A lot of America’s problems would be solved if we went into every low-population-density red state, picked a promising metro area and threw money at creating jobs and housing and neat restaurants and fun activities there

I HAVE A QUEST WHERE IS THE FOURTH
The spines of Kobo Abe’s The Woman in the Dunes, and Yasunari Kawabata’s Snow Country and Thousand Cranes in the Vintage International Modern Japanese Classics series. The spines have red and blue lines and circles that line up when put in orderThe same three books lined up to show similar matching designs of their covers where the title and author are displayed.

Woman in the Dunes also has a realistic painting of beetles a woman in a kimono with skeleton patterns over desert dunes.

Snow Country shows a stark simplistic painting of a woman in a white kimono standing beneath a barren tree.

Thousand Cranes has charcoal sketches of women’s faces, one is drinking from a tea cup.

These three are all by Ohara Koson between 1928-1931 (probably in order of painting). I like how the little guy gets more confident as time goes on.
Three woodblock prints of a black and white cat with a red belled collar. In the first he stands with his front paws on top of an aquarium, looking longingly at goldfish. In the second he catches a mouse and looks pleased with himself, a damaged paper lantern lays on the floor behind him. In the third he stalks goldfish in a bowl, this time seeming sure he can get them.

Ishtar mostly bites and pulls my hair or pats me on the face with her little hands but lately she’s been smacking our elderly Pom Inara on the head who then chases her off the bed. Inara will then decide she needs to go out before going back to sleep so I have to get up.

Was doing some tarot and the King of Cups literally jumped out of the deck twice in a row and then I pulled the Knight of Cups for spouse. Deck is reading us for filth once more. @yoshiyoshitani.bsky.social how did you make a literally magic deck???
The King of Cups from Yoshi Yoshitani’s The Tarot of the Divine. A Chinese dragon looking fierce above a chaliceThe King of Cups again paired with the Knight of Cups. A kind looking man in Mongolian garb astride a horse with a hunting eagle calmly observes the land.Description of the King of Cups as written by Yoshi Yoshitani

The Boy and the Dragon Pearl
China, Chinese Legend
The King of Cups was once a little boy but has matured into a powerful dragon.
He is kind but fiercely protective of those he loves. He is connected to the deep dark waters of the subconscious.
He possesses great patience and wisdom.

Upright: Devotion, loyalty, faithfulness, wisdom, generosity

Reversed: Anxiety, lack of caring, control, violence, imbalanceDescription of the Knight of Cups written by Yoshi Yoshitani

Halibu the Hunter
Mongolia, Mongolian Legend
The Knight of Cups is a messenger.
Halibu is kind and gentle while also willing to take a stand for what he believes in. Halibu provides for his village, and after befriending a dragon, he willingly sacrifices himself to save everyone he loves.

Upright: Chivalry, affection, invitations, taking action, meaningful gifts

Reversed: Heartbreak, infidelity, lack of diplomacy, moodiness, pettiness

Ross Gay, The Book of Delights
I suppose I could spend time theorizing how it is that people are not bad to each other, but that's really not the point. The point is that in almost every instance of our lives, our social lives, we are, if we pay attention, in the midst of an almost constant, if subtle, caretaking. Holding open doors. Offering elbows at crosswalks.
Letting someone else go first. Helping with the heavy bags. Reaching what's too high, or what's been dropped. Pulling someone back to their feet. Stopping at the car wreck, at the struck dog. The alternating merge, also known as the zipper. This caretaking is our default mode and it's always a lie that convinces us to act or believe otherwise. Always.
