Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I love that composition. Such a pleasant grouping of trees to look at along with the barely-visible ridgeline in the background. 000
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Sep & Oct might just be the best months to visit the UP. Hoping for nice colors in Metro Detroit this year -- been a while (maybe 2022?) since the forests near me have had really vibrant yellows in particular. 000
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I'm a sucker for any view with evergreen trees under snowy mountains. Tangent: saw an article about bumblebees in the southern Andes you might find interesting: biographic.com/the-unwildin...biographic.comThe Unwilding of Patagonia’s Pollinators | bioGraphicIn a region synonymous with wilderness, native bumblebees are being replaced by industrial worker bees—and ecosystems are paying the price. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 21/09/2026I love sunlit subjects with dark backgrounds. I'm in a mostly flat place so they're rare here (mostly when there are dark clouds behind sunlit trees). Photos with that dynamic, like yours, always remind me of leaving or arriving at a campsite during golden hour when hiking in the mountains. 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 10/09/2026... AI detectors are shit is, to my memory, largely supported by evidence -- with a useful caveat that they're only shit when they claim something is AI-altered or generated. Anyways, I love your photos and videos, so thanks for sharing Armand. [3/3] 121
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 10/09/2026... when they determine something isn't AI-altered (very low rate of false negatives), but highly inaccurate when they determine something is AI-altered (high rate of false positives). I'd have to dig for citations so hopefully I'm recalling the results correctly, but your intuition that... [2/3] 120
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 10/09/2026I know this is months old, but I was browsing your stuff and saw this convo. I recently read through several studies on AI detector accuracy and learned something that might interest you, though I'm paraphrasing here: Accuracy varies by media type, but leading detectors are highly accurate... Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Though I tried testing it here and it doesn't seem to work in responses. 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 07/09/2026By the way, I think the days of numbering post chains are over. Looks like Bluesky auto-numbers them now (your six-post chain has 1/6, 2/6, etc. displayed with a small graphic). 310
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 07/09/2026What a great photo -- ground squirrel species are endlessly entertaining. I've only seen chipmunks and groundhogs (the only non-montane marmot) here in Michigan, though I was in Colorado recently where there's no shortage of prairie dogs, yellow-bellied marmots, Wyoming ground squirrels, etc. 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Guayaquil's mostly off my radar. I considered going there, but with limited time I stuck to the highlands & Amazon. Fairly large and old city so I imagine there's a lot of history, art, & food to enjoy; I'm curious what drew you there (assuming it's for leisure and not work nor friends/family). 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 25/08/2026(Though I don't even know if particle filters would solve the problem in a meaningful way.) 000
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 25/08/2026Sounds more exciting than winters here, lol. Slight tangent: I saw lots of wood-burning on cold nights; the air quality gets pretty bad in towns. Any idea if this is something people want to address? It seems the wood stoves are a cultural facet, but are chimney particle filters gaining attention? 200
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 25/08/2026I've only visited Zona Sur & Austral in autumn and I'm curious how you'd describe the overcast winter days there, if you feel like writing a bit about them. Are they similar to typical Great Lakes winter cloudy days or are they usually much more dramatic and textured with sun breaking through? [2/2] 100
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 25/08/2026In MI winters we get lengths of flat, featureless grey overcast. Maybe it's similar in WI that you'd be familiar with (or maybe it's from westerlies across Lake Michigan?). You previously said the incredible winter sunrises and sunsets you've occasionally shared happen a few times each week. [1/2] 210
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/08/2026Yeah that sounds nice, particularly if the text field formatting makes it clear what'll be displayed upfront. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/08/2026... results. Your point seems spot-on from a practical perspective; the vast majority of discoverability within a community is clearly from social activity instead of search (i.e. finding a few prominent accounts in a topic via search, then discovering 100x more via browsing their activity). [3/3] 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/08/2026... people posting about southern Chile, and tags helped narrow results. Otherwise I'd be hoping for deliberate or coincidental search term alignment in the meat of a post/profile description. They enable people to separate what they actually want to say from what merely improves search... [2/3] 120
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/08/2026I have a slight disagreement, but I've primarily used Bsky to find things instead of to be found. For initially finding niches, I think the search benefits from tags which is why I wish they were optional to add but hidden from browsing by default. When I started using Bsky I searched for... [1/3] 120
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/08/2026This annoys me too about @bsky.app -- I understand limitations have their benefits, but I often have to repeatedly prune what I write (incl. this post via occasional awkward abbreviations I'd never otherwise use). Not sure how to ideally solve it, but +50% to the limit would be nice in the meantime. 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/08/2026I agree, but tagging is arguably a necessary evil solely for discoverability; I'd be surprised if anyone likes how they're implemented. I wish @bsky.app made tags independent of character limits (inputted in a separate field) and hid them behind a button akin to Flickr. 230
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Devour the wild carrots, cute groundhog... #wildlife #nature #groundhog 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Jaw-dropping video, especially a snowy Puntiagudo. Though Todd, you've mixed them up! Left is Puyehue; Tronador is behind Puntiagudo (just poking above the right slope); La Picada is between Osorno & Puntiagudo; Calbuco is hidden but to the right of Osorno. Is driving the pass ever rough in winter? 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 05/08/2026I'm reminded of what Eric Schmidt told Congress last year: "Many people project demand for our industry will go from 3 percent to 99 percent of total generation… an additional 29 GW by 2027 and 67 more GW by 2030”. Who knows what'll happen, but some major insiders aren't expecting anything small. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 27/07/2026It's so beautiful up there. Coldest swims for me in Superior had ~43F water temp in Grand Island's Trout Bay and Waterfall Beach during an early June heat wave (air temps were ~90F). Wading made my legs feel like they were in an ice bath while my upper half was in a sauna. 000
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 16/07/2026I've also seen versions that make use of several fans for desktop computers (purpose is to reduce noise while maintaining performance, as certain desktop fan models are made to be very quiet). 000
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 26/06/2026An old one-seed juniper along the Rio Grande Gorge in New Mexico (yet again the tree in my last few posts; it kept catching my attention over two days). #landscapephotography 030
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 26/06/2026Again, an old one-seed juniper on the rim of the Rio Grande Gorge (same juniper in my last post, but different angle & time). #landscapephotography 030
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 25/06/2026An old one-seed juniper along the rim of the Rio Grande Gorge in northern New Mexico. This one was the subject of a lot of photos. #landscapephotography 082
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 24/06/2026Another Rocky Mountain juniper, this time along the Rio Grande Gorge in northern New Mexico #landscapephotography 050
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 22/06/2026Dawn views near Cañon City, Colorado. I really should've shot a vertical pano for the first one. #landscapephotography 030
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 24/05/2026That's one funky place. Must be a keeper somewhere in there, lol. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/05/2026Yeah, this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andes_v... (I forget if the warning signage I saw said Hantavirus, Andes hantavirus, or Andes virus)en.wikipedia.orgAndes virus - Wikipedia 000
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/05/2026Makes me think of this article I saw yesterday: www.bbc.com/future/artic...bbc.comJapan is gripped by mass allergies. A 1950s project is to blameA decision made 70 years ago to reforest vast swathes of Japan with just two kinds of tree has come back to haunt the country. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/05/2026Way off topic: Was reading into Andes virus and saw that it's very rare (~46 cases/yr in CL), but I saw signs posted on Chiloé. Highest occurrence is in the stretch from Cochamó to Palena. Do you take precautions or is it so rare that it's simply mitigated through measures you'd perform regardless? 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 19/05/2026Bit of an optical illusion in that it looks like a miniature landscape model. Really cool shot. 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 17/05/2026Clouds definitely put on a show here in Michigan last night. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 16/05/2026Wouldn't draw a ton of people, but I wonder if May+June would be a nice time for landscape photography. Later sunrises and earlier sunsets with dramatic, varying weather = don't need to wake up super early or be out very late. Unless there are mostly flat gray skies. 020
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 16/05/2026Per many in my family, the Big Three definitely had people who recognized the significance and wanted to work on hybrids & EVs as early as the 80s. The same is probably true for solar. The lack of US leadership when we had every advantage is a tragedy that deserves intense scrutiny and reflection. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 16/05/2026Ever get thoughts of "People are missing out by not visiting the area in winter" or does it mostly make sense to avoid the frequent rain and colder temps? 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 22/04/2026I loved the trees in southern Chile & Argentina. Lots of them grow in such windy, rugged environments that they're twisted and deformed in ways that give them so much character. A hill I camped on in Villa Cerro Castillo felt like a sculpture garden. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 14/04/2026You know that strong urge that seemingly instinctively forms to pet an animal -- an urge that often needs to be restrained? Those two triggered it immediately. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 08/03/2026I'd guess a canary in the coalmine for Chile's populist right seems to be if they dismantle the anti-corruption laws enacted in recent decades which protect against plutocracy. Right-wing voters in the US have been blind to the erosion of similar laws here since the '70s, to painful consequences. 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 08/03/2026The Trump era has made clear to me that much of the US (and the world) gleefully tolerates bullies if they assume the bullying benefits them. I'd prefer a belief that most adherents to cruel, hateful populism simply don't recognize what they're truly supporting, but that belief is often strained. 120
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 27/02/2026Does that lake ever have a bad angle? Lol. It was jarring & funny to see bright yellow Lombardy poplars in otherwise green forests. A thicket on the north end of Lago Mascardi stuck out. Whenever I return I'll have a tough decision between spring/early summer and late summer/autumn (hopefully both). 010
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 20/01/2026Do you know if the fires are killing large trees or if they're burning through quickly? Tragic to picture the park burning; clearly drier than forests to the west but still felt like a temperate rainforest. Lots of dry underbrush (especially bamboo(?)) in summer that seemed like kindling, though. 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 23/12/2025You too, Todd. Fell in love with southern Chile after visiting the region a few years ago; I found your account when I browsed Bsky for people posting about it. Your posts have made my days brighter in a year I've mostly not been very fond of. I did get an email with some good news to end the year:conservapucheguin.orgHeart of Cochamó in Chilean Patagonia to be protected after historic purchase - Conserva Puchegüín 110
Reid Dickson @reiddickson.bsky.social · 21/11/2025Any idea what the yellow flowering plants are? I think I've seen them in lots of photos and videos in the southern Andes; are they calafates? 110
