I worked about an hour north of DCA. By 10:30 when night shift was ending, 2 of us would leave. One person waited for the overnight, who would usually arrive 30 min early, then the crew would arrive at 6:30 to let them out. Early in, early out was standard.

I do question why ATC didn't instruct the Blackhawk to descend to 200 ft, which is the max altitude at the point. The real issue is even if it went as planned, they'd be 100 ft apart. When speaking of aircraft, that is equal to a bullet grazing your ear. A half inch right, and boom.

Good question! In my day, my airport had a TRACON, but it has since been moved to the large AT Centers. Towers now only receive traffic from the Centers, as opposed to Centers handing off to the local TRACON to the tower. 30 years ago, with nothing coming in, you just passed comms and took a leak.

Yes, absolutely, and unless something has changed, only 1 person works the tower overnight. Rush times happen a few times a day. Once evening hits, things are quiet, even on the east coast. By 9 PM airports are virtually shutting down.

Barring an inability to successfully certify on location, no ATC have been fired since Reagan. There is a shortage, largely because so many were hired at the same time in the 80s (me among them) and retired at the same time. Becoming an ATC is brutally difficult.

Furthermore, volume determines staffing. One local controller is normal when volume is low. This is all nonsense. During the overnight, one person works every position. Data, Ground, Local... stop it.

I worked in an L5 tower. When an aircraft is VFR and says they see the plane you told them about, you did your job. These helicopters are flying short, low level routes & they do this one all the time. It was pilot error, end of story. ATC did nothing wrong, but Bezos wants you to think otherwise.

No, there is ZERO connection. I hate Trump too, but this is not on him. Let's stick to facts, and the facts so far are clear. The helicopter was cleared VFR in airspace it is always in, they acknowledged the visual on the plane, then as it neared the plane it didn't respond to the tower. Facts.
