In the mid-1860s, as his empire was increasingly threatened by an expanding Ottoman Empire and lesser, rival lords, Tewodros wrote to Queen Victoria for support, having long allied with Britain as a fellow Christian power.

When she failed to respond, Tewodros imprisoned British diplomats, prompting Britain to declare war.

On April 9, 1868, 13,000 troops dispatched from then-British India descended on the king’s court in Magdala and killed Tewodros’ 4,000 soldiers. Instead of surrendering, Tewodros shot himself.

The soldiers looted Magdala, taking everything from treasured artefacts to locks of Tewodros’ hair. Robert Napier, the British commander who led the mission, took the Gondarine Gospel. It has since been passed to other British colonial officers and British museums. About a decade ago, it fell into private hands.

As the centrists at the Guardian wring their hands and pour out their panic at the rise of the far right, it's worth remembering where they stood when the the far-right's traditional left-wing opposition came to power in the Labour Party […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Screen grab from https://novaramedia.com/2017/01/08/how-the-guardian-changed-tack-on-corbyn-despite-its-readers/ showing the text:
"The newspaper’s interest picked up after revelations in mid-July that Corbyn was ahead in private polling. And then, when the YouGov poll landed, the coverage exploded – helped by an accelerant in the form of Tony Blair’s first clumsy intervention into the contest. A selection of the headlines from the Guardian website’s front page on 22 and 23 July gives a sense of the almost hysterical tone that took hold: “Blair urges Labour not to wrap itself in a Jeremy Corbyn comfort blanket”; “Think before you vote for Jeremy Corbyn”; “Labour can come back from the brink, but it seems to lack the will to do so”; “Blair: I wouldn’t want to win on an old fashioned leftist platform.” On these two panic-stricken days alone, the Guardian website carried opinion pieces hostile to Corbyn from Anne Perkins, Suzanne Moore, Polly Toynbee, Tim Bale, Martin Kettle, Michael White, Anne Perkins (again), and Anne Perkins (yet again). There was not a single pro-Corbyn column.

In one of her three efforts, Anne Perkins dispensed with subtlety and simply pleaded:

Please, new associate members who will shape the party for the next five years, maybe forever: do a little research. Think what kind of country you want for you and your children and, even more importantly, think how you might get there. Now think, is Jeremy Corbyn in the middle of that picture? I don’t think so."

Text clip: "The Dutch central bank said Wednesday it had moved 86 tonnes of its gold reserves out of the US and Canada to London, citing “increasing geopolitical unrest”.

The DNB bank said gold reserves held in London could be traded more easily than those held in New York and Ottawa.

“This makes it the quickest for DNB to deploy in a crisis situation,” the bank said in a statement.

“With this step, we have improved the deployability of the gold reserves. We assume that we will never need to deploy the gold, but it is nevertheless necessary to strengthen our resilience and preparedness,” DNB President Olaf Sleijpen said.

The total Dutch gold stock amounted to 612.4 tonnes and was valued at €72.2 billion (US$83.7 billion) at the end of 2025, the DNB said."

"Last year, other security specialists detected a similar threat, from scammers who prompted LLMs to hallucinate plausible URLs for existing software packages. These AI “slop” links took users to counterfeit packages with scammers’ code—ready to be added to a project with a click.

Scammers who engage in this “slop squatting” have plenty to work with: Last year, a study by Joseph Spracklen—a Ph.D. student at the University of Texas, San Antonio—and colleagues found that nearly 20 percent of LLM-recommended software packages were fictitious.

Seth Michael Larson, who coined the term “slop squatting” last year, is a security developer–in-residence at the Python Software Foundation, which oversees the programming language that is used worldwide by some 23 million people. Larson spoke with IEEE Spectrum about “slop squatting,” “phantom squatting,” and how security work is changing in response."

Pointed article from @rbreich robertreich.substack.com/p/a-realis…
Clip from article at https://robertreich.substack.com/p/a-realists-guide-to-the-american
"1. First, forget politics as you’ve come to see it as electoral contests between Democrats and Republicans. Think power. The underlying contest is between a small minority who have gained power over the system, and the vast majority who have little or none.

2. Forget what you may have learned about the choice between the “free market” and government. A market cannot exist without a government to organize and enforce it. The important question is whom the market has been organized to serve.

3. For the same reason, don’t try to separate economics from politics. They’re two sides of the same issue. (Be suspicious of anyone who tries to separate them.)

4. Forget the standard economic goals of higher growth and greater efficiency. The issue is who benefits from more growth and efficiency.

5. Don’t be dazzled by “corporate social responsibility.” Most of it is public relations. Corporations won’t voluntarily sacrifice shareholder returns unless laws require them to. Even then, be skeptical of laws unless they’re enforced and backed by big penalties. Large corporations and the super-rich ignore laws when the penalties for violating them are small relative to the gains for breaking them. Fines are then simply very manageable costs of doing business."

@amalia22 Tough call..... 😬
clipped text: "Shockingly, McConnell reported that cannibalizing trained worms induced learning in untrained planaria. In other experiments, he trained planaria to run through mazes and even developed a technique for extracting RNA from trained worms in order to inject it into untrained worms in an effort to transmit memories from one animal to another. Eventually, after his retirement in 1988, McConnell faded from view, and his work was relegated to the sidebars of textbooks as a curious but cautionary tale. Many scientists simply assumed that invertebrates like planaria couldn’t be trained, making the dismissal of McConnell’s work easy. McConnell also published some of his studies in his own journal, The Worm Runner’s Digest, alongside sci-fi humor and cartoons. As a result, there wasn’t a lot of interest in attempting to replicate his findings."

The UK Govt (apparently redacted) "Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security: A national security assessment" reaches some terrifying conclusions, while the mainstream news headlines favour geopolitics over environmental catastrophe. […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Key judgements Analytical Confidence
1. Global ecosystem degradation and collapse threaten UK national security and prosperity. The world is already experiencing
impacts including crop failures, intensified natural disasters and infectious disease outbreaks. Threats will increase with degradation
and intensify with collapse. Without major intervention to reverse the current trend, this is highly likely to continue to High
2050 and beyond.
2. Cascading risks of ecosystem degradation are likely to include geopolitical instability, economic insecurity, conflict, migration
and increased inter-state competition for resources. Moderate
3. Critical ecosystems that support major global food production areas and impact global climate, water and weather cycles are
the most important for UK national security. Severe degradation or collapse of these would highly likely result in water insecurity,
severely reduced crop yields, a global reduction in arable land, fisheries collapse, changes to global weather patterns, release of High
trapped carbon exacerbating climate change, novel zoonotic diseases and loss of pharmaceutical resources. The Amazon rainforest,
Congo rainforest, boreal forests, the Himalayas and South East Asia's coral reefs and mangroves are particularly significant for the UK.

Guildford finally caved in and announced his retirement after being threatened with an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which has previously been distinguished by its willingness to give senior police officers like Cressida Dick a free pass for the most egregious forms of misconduct. It is hard to imagine any chief constable or commissioner sticking their neck out again like this in the future, whatever party leads the government. In this, as in so many other ways, Starmer is clearing potential obstacles from the path of Britain’s far right.

There are reports—such as in the mainstream Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz in October 2025 about Israeli “influence operations aiming to install Reza Pahlavi as Shah of Iran”—that Israeli intelligence has a role in the protests, and the United States has openly told the protestors that it would bomb Tehran if the violence by the government increase. Last year, protests took place in twelve South Pars oil refineries, where five thousand contract workers in the Bushehr Gas Refinery Workers Union marched with their families on 9 December in Asaluyeh to demand higher wages and better working-conditions. When the workers took their struggle to the National Parliament in Tehran, where they called for an end to the contract work system, the Israelis and the United States took advantage of these sincere protests to attempt to transform a legitimate struggle into a potential regime change operation.

Limiting the definition of personal data

The Commission intends to stop classifying pseudonymised data (ie swapping out a user's identifiable name for a code or number) as personal data if a company claims it cannot identify a person, thereby exempting it from GDPR protection. This rule would also apply even when other actors ( for instance data brokers) can still identify individuals based on the pseudonymised data.

As the digital rights organisations Noyb and EDRi have pointed out, this change turns a universal rule into a subjective one. GDPR protections will only apply when a company has the means to identify a person based on the data it holds. This gives huge leeway to companies to decide not to apply the GDPR arguing that they can’t identify a person. Worse, data can be sold to other companies or data brokers that do have the means to re-identify individuals.

But even if data is never sold or passed on to third parties, the proposed subjective approach would still severely narrow the scope of the GDPR. Big Tech companies such as Meta and Google for instance could use personal data for online tracking by claiming that the data cannot be traced back to a natural person and is therefore not covered by the GDPR.

In spite of overwhelming support for the renationalisation of private water companies, the UK Govt insists on following their failed Thatcherite model and throwing regulation on the bonfire to attract foreign investment. Unlike Venezuela, the US has no need […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
The proposed overhaul of the UK water sector, notably the potential scrapping of Ofwat, carries significant implications for the economy and investors alike. This initiative reflects a broader recognition that the current regulatory framework may be hindering the necessary investment to rejuvenate a critical infrastructure sector that has long been under scrutiny for its inefficiencies and environmental impact.

At its core, the review aims to attract investment by reshaping the regulatory landscape. By potentially abolishing or reforming Ofwat, the government is signaling a willingness to explore more flexible regulatory models that could better incentivize private investment. This is particularly crucial as the UK grapples with aging water infrastructure that urgently requires modernization. Investors often seek environments where the rules are clear and conducive to returns. A streamlined regulatory framework could enhance the attractiveness of the water sector, drawing in both domestic and foreign capital. https://thefinancialanalyst.net/2024/10/22/uk-water-sector-overhaul-a-game-changer-for-investors-and-economy/

@ErikUden Twitch and Youtube you say? Quite a coincidence that the US has blocked EU visas over Europe's 'coercion' of US social media platforms..... www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp39kng…
Text: The US State Department said it would deny visas to five people, including a former EU commissioner, for seeking to "coerce" American social media platforms into suppressing viewpoints they oppose.

"These radical activists and weaponized NGOs have advanced censorship crackdowns by foreign states - in each case targeting American speakers and American companies," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.

Remember when right-wingers kept comparing State finances to a household budget? Well, the latest Tory Fuhrer goes one further by comparing the Prime Minister to a CEO. If the PM was a CEO she'd be deporting unproductive citizens, outsourcing the country's […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
UK Tory leader Badenoch quote: "“If she was a CEO, she would have been fired, and she might even have been prosecuted for market abuse. That’s why we’ve written to the Financial Conduct Authority. So will the Prime Minister ensure the Chancellor fully co-operates with any investigation?”

Sir Keir Starmer; Tim Davie (BBC); Carolyn McCall (ITV); Jonathan Allan (Channel 4); Sarah Rose (Channel 5); Geraint Evans (S4C); and Dame Melanie Dawes (Ofcom)
Today, hundreds of MPs, Peers, and leaders from business, faith, sport, and culture gathered in Westminster for a National Emergency Briefing
We were presented with the latest evidence showing that the United Kingdom must urgently prepare for a cascade of serious societal impacts. The rapidly escalating climate and nature crises are set to make the UK increasingly unrecognisable and dangerous, with extreme weather events, the risk of food shortages, price shocks, economic instability and rising geopolitical risks.
We are deeply alarmed by the scale of fossil fuel–funded disinformation that has flooded Westminster and the media. The lack of public access to accurate, science-based information has created a vacuum which has been filled by polarised headlines designed to deny and delay action.
Under the Communications Act 2003, all public service broadcasters must inform the public on major national and international issues. The UK has so far failed to meet these obligations. The Climate Change Committee has also urged the Government to provide trusted public information. ..ctd at : https://www.nebriefing.org/open-letter-keir

Starmer is named. In Gaza Genocide: A Collective Crime, a report issued by the U.N. on Oct. 20 and signed by Francesca Albanese, the British prime minister is specifically cited for his complicity in Israel’s terror campaign against the Palestinians of Gaza. “On 9 October 2023, immediately after Israel announced a tightened siege on Gaza,” the report reads, “key Western leaders expressed support for the ‘self-defence’ of Israel … British opposition leader Keir Starmer defended Israel’s right to cut off water and power to civilians.”

Everyone stop what you're doing and fix exploitative capitalism and runaway wealth inequality with your "economic liberty". ....why has no one ever thought of this before?? 😬
Post text: "What you'd *really* need to do is educate the masses and mobilize them behind an agenda of attacking the rich *through* economic liberty, but for reasons we can only speculate on (heh) magazines like Reason dare not even dip their toes into these waters..."
