Look at thisssss! My beautiful book two cover is live!! 💙📚
The cover of the Uncanny Art of Faerie Contracts, by Reena McCarty. The background is a sunset--purpleish red fading down through orange to yellow at the bottom, where there's a wintery mountain range with a stand of pine trees in front. The trees are a variety of colors--green and yellow and also some that are reddish and creamish. The cover is mostly taken up by a scroll with the title, surrounded by autumn flowers, pine cones and branches, some mysterious out-of-season glacier lilies, anda dip pen and pickaxe. The cover is on a mock-up book, set against a background photo of snowy pine woods. There are some purple asters and red and yellow blanketflowers (ooh, not a montana native! What are you doing here, stranger? Who can say??) tucked in the corners.April 6th, 2027! Text reads: It's been a year since Poppy Hill left Otherside after making a desperate deal for her life. A year in which all bargaining has been stopped by order of the Wild King, as he works to secure his throne amongst growing rumors of a curse on his line.
Then King Theron himself comes looking for Poppy's help negotiating a new kind of contract, and she finds herself drawn back into a world of Faerie politics, schemes and intrigue. But Poppy's loyalties are already owned by another, and the one pulling her strings has her own plans for the Wild.
Plans that will force Poppy closer to the king than she ever imagined possible.

on a backdrop of a bright yellow larch tree in a green pine wood, with the same flowers from the previous slide, along with a round sticker that says "unionize your faerieland" in yellow. There is also a statue of a big cow.

I'm so tired of this that it's making me want to go to the coast.

I bought this Jane Eyre when I was in the 6th grade, using the prize money I got from winning a poetry contest. I did not have a lot of friends. I did have some very horny bookplates, for some reason.
A hardcover copy of the Illustrated Junior Library edition of Jane Eyre. It has a sad faced lady in a purple dress that's not particularly period appropriate, with equally incorrect long flowing brown hair. She's clutching a handkerchief and staring wistfully from a stone balcony. A bookplate print of "golden wings" by Boris Vallejo, which is a perkily betitted lady in a tiny bikini riding a winged horse in front of a non-earth planet with several more in the background. It's a deeply weird bookplate for an 11 year old to have. It says "from the books of Reena McCarty "

We have one that sounds like a haunted carnival. I've never seen anyone buy things from it, which is probably good because it 100% steals souls.

I decided to spring for a fancy "make a donation for a special design" license plate and they arrived today and I'm so delighted to have a pretty one? Way more than I expected to be. (Sample, not mine)
Sample of a glacier park conservancy Montana license plate, which depicts northern lights over st. Mary lake. It's all blues and greens and stars, with pine trees in silhouette. Very pretty.

I am being profiled. YouTube is doing an aggression at me.
A tv screen with suggested YouTube videos. On the left is "'The Lost Boys' stsr Ali Louis Bourzgui on flying above the stae & his first Tony" on the right, "An inside look at The Vampire Lestat". YouTube thinks I want videos about singing vampires and just because it's right doesn't mean I need this sass.

A fun thing about being an author is getting a constant barrage of AI spam messages from scammers trying to steal your money. And sometimes the scam is so low-effort that they mix up your adult fantasy with hiking/stabbing/faerie trickery and food with what sounds like a very cute picture book.
Hello Reena McCarty,

My name is Christina, and I represent Vermont Book Club. I’ve spent time exploring your work and am thoroughly impressed by your ability to find the extraordinary adventure within the rhythmic, everyday routines of a neighborhood.

Your book, The Tricky Business of Faerie Bargains, is a masterclass in making the "power of pretend" and the curiosity of early childhood both accessible and deeply relatable. It is a truly engaging work; it captures the reader's attention by perfectly balancing the sensory details of the bin lorry’s arrival with the gentle, mischievous stakes of a missing letter. The way you handle the imaginative mimicry right down to the brightly colored bobble hat makes for a uniquely compelling reading experience that would resonate deeply with our international audience of parents, early-years educators, and anyone who understands the magic in a child's "playtime adventure."

@tstimac.bsky.social has given me notes on book two and I just want to say, that as of this draft, no one has made me cut the vampire taking all your blood away. I'm going to win.
Still impressed that you got the vampire taking all the blood away into this book that emphatically doesn't have any vampires in it. That was well done, though I do wonder how anyone who isn't me is going to respond to it.

There's a well known haunted spot in great falls and when I went there I was like "yep, sure is!" But what that means is simply not my business.
Screenshot of a text conversation between me and my brother, that says:

Me: Your job is weird. Stay out of the one little dorm room with the angry ghost. It doesn't like company. (Unless you aren't at the Ursuline Center and there's another one I don't know about)

Him: Nope, that's the one.

Him: We actually have two people in various programs that refuse to come back here because of the ghost

Me: Yeah, I think it's the second or third room on the left? It doesn't want you in there.

Him: Both had encounters, both have sworn never to come back

Him: It's fun!

Him: Third on the left

Convincing you to read my novel with the first sentence, but I did the whole first paragraph because I'm nice like that. The Tricky Business of Faerie Bargains is out April 7th 2026!
Chapter One

There's a cute pinecone graphic here, and the text, which says:

The client was too focused on Gloria to even look at me as I settled into my spot in the small conference room. I couldn't blame her. Gloria was tall and eye-catching and wore a suit that cost more than my yearly stipend, and I'd spent basically my entire life trying to be as invisible as possible. Still, in my experience, not paying attention to your surroundings often led to sudden, painful death. Our clients were usually at least a little self-centered, but I was always amazed at their lack of survival instinct.

Tricky has a face! Look at how beautiful!

The cover of The Tricky Business of Faerie Bargains, by Reena McCarty

The background is a night sky, dark blue on top, fading down to a bright blue behind a mountain range. There is a little peek of sun or moon behind the mountains, and a stone circle in the foreground at the bottom. The bulk of the cover is a slightly stained scroll that has the title, The Tricky Business of Faerie Bargains, written in two different fonts.

The scroll is surrounded by and almost holding back a bunch of plants and flowers–pine branches and cones, balsamroots, lupines, and prairie rockets, along with things like chokecherries, huckleberries, and morels. There are also a few other things in the border–a bronze dagger, a salt shaker, a spoon, and a pen, along with a scattering of iron nails.
