Aside from the widely noted fact that most Russian soldiers are highly-paid "volunteers", it's also not true the mobiks had no choice. The sentence for going AWOL is typically ~5 years, and as bad as Russian prisons are, odds of coming out alive are […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Musk meanwhile has doubled down, but his screed glosses over the fact the Ukrainians specifically complained about Starshield, which has according to them now been restored. Also glosses over the fact that defending yourself from an invading army typically […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
A tweet from Elon Musk (a man previously best know for having the world's thinnest skin, before he pivoted for fascism) which says "Correct.

Using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people has never been allowed, nor should it be.

Starshield, a different system, is controlled by the US government. What they decide to do is up to them.

Ukraine military violated Starlink terms of service and used it for offensive drone strikes to kill people. That loophole was closed last week.

Starlink remains critical to the defense of Ukraine, as it is the only system that cannot be jammed or blown up, at least for now. Were Starlink to be turned off, the Ukrainian front line would collapse immediately. This is NOT a threat, it is simply a statement of fact.

Starlink was also crucial to preventing Russia from overrunning Ukraine in the early days of the war, as all other means of communication were destroyed or jammed by Russia.

SpaceX has done more to defend Ukraine than any private company on Earth BY FAR.

That said, I have nothing but UTTER CONTEMPT for the virtue-signaling evil warmongers who push for endless slaughter and offer no realistic solution to the conflict. May you burn in hell.

End of story."

and quotes tweet from @varifrank, the visible part of which says "STARLINK WORKS THE SAME WAY ITS ALWAYS WORKED. ITS NOT A WEAPONS SYSTEM, NO MATTER HOW MUCH UKRAINE WANTS IT TO BE. x.com/CNBC/status/21…"

At least one person does appreciate Musk's bad Ukraine take (or two, if you count catturd)
Tweet from Kremlin stooge Kirill Dmitriev @kadmitriev, which says "True, insightful, and brilliant—Elon exposes the self-perpetuating evil cycle of war profiteering." followed by a screenshot of two tweets from Elon Musk which very falsely say "which say
"What’s actually going on in Ukraine is that there is a massive incentive difference between the elites and the people.

The former have grown very rich off the hundreds of billions flowing to Ukraine, while the latter’s children are conscripted to die in trenches.

And some of that US taxpayer money comes back through multiple laundry machines to fund political campaigns in America, which is why you see some politicians caring more about Ukraine than America!" followed by a replly from twitter's dumbest piece of shit @Catturd2 which says "And Zelensky is on the side of the elites."

2-4% #tornado probability in #BigSur 🤨 #CAwx
Screenshot of part of the an NWS forecast discussion page:
this will be between now and 10 PM this evening before the cut-off
low pressure system begins to push onshore over central/southern
California and we lose the upper level instability aloft. The SPC
issued a 2-4% tornado probability for the Big Sur coastline, thereby
indicating increased potential for some low-topped supercells. If
the offshore convection moves inland with rotation, there is the
potential for a tornado.

From the linked page:
The carrying capacity of a ship is usually measured by mass (the deadweight tonnage) or by volume (the net register tonnage). Deadweight tonnage is generally measured now in metric tons (tonnes). Register tons are measured in cubic feet, with one register ton equivalent to 100 ft3 (2.83 m3).[needs update]

Section: Primary String

This question set collects basic information regarding the string that is being applied for (for example, a-label, meaning, script). If the applying entity opts to designate a replacement string, it must answer the same set of questions for the replacement string from the AGB Question Set 5 on.
AGB Q116. Applied-for Primary String (ASCII Label)

ass
AGB Q118. What is the meaning/definition of the applied-for gTLD string?

Provide the meaning, or restatement of the string in English, that is, a description of the literal meaning of the string in the opinion of the applying entity. If there is no literal meaning in English (for example, a brand name or a proper noun without a translation) simply state "No English Translation"

ASS can be a short form of words such as asset, association and assistant. It can represent something of value, a group organized around a shared purpose, or a person or digital agent that helps a user.

We have not been as fast as we would have liked but we are trying to balance our desire for transparency with gaining a clear understanding from petabytes of agent activity logs, and working with impacted organizations.

We are prioritizing as best as we can based on severity, and adding resources. Hugging Face is still the most severe event we’ve seen. We will be as transparent as we can be subject to things like vulnerabilities in other companies that our agents have found, which will be their call to disclose or not." and quotes a tweet from @OpenAI, the visible part of which says: "
After the Hugging Face incident, we committed to conducting a much broader review of actions taken by our models during training and evaluation and to being transparent about our findings. This is an extensive review that is ongoing."

Text from the linked page:
How requests are logged when the request URL or headers exceed the maximum size

If the total size of all request headers, including cookies, exceeds 20 KB, or if the URL exceeds 8192 bytes, CloudFront can't parse the request completely and can't log the request. Because the request isn't logged, you won't see in the log files the HTTP error status code returned.

Who could have predicted that taking a high level position in a widely despised mega-corp / ponzi scheme would lead to a flood of negative interactions? Even a super-intelligence could not have foreseen this! xcancel.com/deanwball/status/207847…
The linked tweet from head of strategic futures @openai Dean W. Ball
@deanwball:
I’m afraid to tell you that it is effectively impossible to do the kind of writing I used to do on this website, not because anyone at OpenAI censors me but because of the sheer volume of hostility I get for sharing my analysis as a frontier lab employee.

I enjoyed writing quick takes on this website for one basic reason: I could get rapid feedback on my own ideation process in real time. Post the early version of the take here, see the criticism; then refine, sharpen, and repeat. Unfortunately now that feature of this site is gone, because the feedback I get is now almost exclusively colored by resentment at the fact that I work at a frontier lab or other forms of hatred for my employer. The feedback signal is essentially useless now, so writing on here is not fruitful for me anymore.

Literally everything I write now is responded to with “of course you said that because <OpenAI>.” I am truly just writing what I think and would have written anyway, but everyone reads what I say in the shrieking tone of “this is what openai thinks!!!!” (to be clear, my posts are not what openai thinks). This is an unpleasant and more importantly unproductive pattern for me.

I anticipate that the shape of this account will change significantly as a result. I do not currently know how. It will not become a LinkedIn feed. It will change in some other way. It will no longer be a real-time accounting of my own thinking as it develops, since this is precisely the thing that seems impossible to do now. That will have to shift to private channels.

Bad #AvGeek DIY #Aviation idea: Shahed variants reportedly have warheads up to 90 kg. So hypothetically, if you find a nice intact one like this, you could ditch the warhead for a seat, rig a controller to the flight computer, and (if you're maybe a little […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Today's notable #KWVI traffic was this shiny Douglas A-26 Invader (#N126HK) #WarBird #AvGeek #PlaneSpotting
Silver, twin-engine late WWII bomber, with blue engine cowlings, seen from below left against a bright overcast sky. There is period insignia on the tail, with the letters AN ahead and J after. There is a broad yellow stripe on the vertical stabilizer, with somewhat hard to read black numbers under it.The same aircraft, closer to the camera and seen more side on. The numbers on the tail are now clearly 435788The same aircraft, seen side-oneThe same aircraft, flying away from the camera, landing gear now extended

*sigh* Even the report repeatedly states that only some (undetermined) fraction of incidents are likely to be both real and Russian
Tweet from Peter Baker @peterbakernyt which says "Russia made 144 drone sorties over European territory in 19 months in a campaign that successfully "mapped NATO’s air defence gaps," study finds. @charles_clover" and links to an FT story titled "Russian drone campaign mapped Nato air defence gaps, study finds"

and another thing… the IISS report credulously takes reports of large formations at face value, because they were reported by the police, though as far as I can tell this was again a "lights at night" situation
dents. But an incident on 3 January 2025 provides more concrete evidence. Up to 20 large UAVs were observed flying in formation over the port of Køge, a commercial harbour 39 km southwest of Copenhagen, before disappearing into Køge Bay at high speed.23 In 2022, the port served as the primary embarkation point for Denmark’s largest military deployment in two decades in support of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence on the eastern flank.24 For Russian military planners seeking to map NATO’s logistical arteries to the Baltic states, it is highly likely that Køge harbour was a priority, and the January 2025 overflight, confirmed by Danish police, constitutes one of the clearest uncontested examples of UAVs flying over a dual-purpose logistics site.
