I HAVE BEEN CHEWED UP. I HAVE BEEN SPAT OUT. I HAVE BEEN LEFT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN THE AUSTRALIAN BUSH COVERED IN BLOOD, TEARS, AND MY OWN POOR LIFE CHOICES. AND I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU. There are books you enjoy. There are books you love. There are books you recommend when someone asks for a good read. And then there are books that become your entire personality for an uncomfortable amount of time. Grief Eater is not a book to me anymore. It is a disease. A curse. A religious text.
A creature living in my ribcage that occasionally wakes up at 3 A.M., shakes me violently by the shoulders, and screams,
"REMEMBER THE
ZOMBIE ROAD TRIP? REMEMBER THE GRIEF?
REMEMBER HOW MUCH WE CRIED?" YES. I REMEMBER. I REMEMBER EVERY SINGLE SECOND. THIS WAS MY THIRD READ. A RE-READ. A RE-RE-READ. A JOURNEY I ENTERED WILLINGLY WITH THE FULL KNOWLEDGE THAT THIS BOOK WAS GOING TO DRAG ME BEHIND A MOTORCYCLE MADE OF TRAUMA AND BODY HORROR. AND IT

SOMEHOW IT GOT ME HARDER. I knew where every emotional landmine was buried. I had the map. I had the coordinates. I had a tiny little warning sign that said "DO NOT STEP HERE YOU WILL CRY. "AND I SPRINTED DIRECTLY INTO THE MINEFIELD ANYWAY. I CANNOT SHUT UP ABOUT THIS BOOK. I do not recommend Grief Eater. I inflict Grief Eater upon innocent civilians. Someone says they like horror? GRIEF EATER. Someone says they like queer stories? GRIEF EATER. Someone says they enjoy books that make them feel something? GRIEF EATER. Someone says they have never heard of it? Congratulations, that is no longer a problem because I am now standing in their doorway like a Victorian ghost with a lantern whispering, "Do you have a moment to discuss our lord and savior, the feral lesbian zombie grief revenge novel?" Emma Osborne did not write a zombie story. Emma Osborne took grief, scooped out its organs, gave it teeth, set it loose on the highway, and said, "Go. Be terrible. Be beautiful. Make them understand. " This book is putrid and radiant. It is flesh under fingernails. It is screaming until your throat is raw. It is the unbearable need to be seen by the people who hurt you. Her hunger is horrifying because it is recognizable. Who has not wanted to tear open the universe and demand an explanation for the pain they were forced to carry? Who has not wanted someone to look at their suffering and simply say: "I see what happened to you. " And then this absolute monster of a book has the AUDACITY to also be tender. The AUDACITY.
The GALL. The UNMITIGATED NERVE. To be this grotesque and this gentle at the same time should be illegal. There should be a small government official outside every copy handing out a pamphlet that says: "WARNING: THIS BOOK WILL EAT YOUR HEART, DIGEST IT, AND THEN HAND IT BACK TO YOU WITH A NOTE THAT SAYS 'YOU ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON YOU WERE BEFORE THIS.
