Study notes, Sep 10th. - Dr. Alastor LeRoux

Due to the unknown potency of Lucifer’s venom, all my other associates refuse to get close to our mild mannered guest. I however, have no such qualms as I have spent the last month or so studying his behaviour and intelligence. He even appears to be capable of recognising faces, as even with the glass separating us, he recognises my voice and appearance and often comes over to see what I have brought him by means of puzzles. He is particularly adept at puzzles that give rewards, and is highly motivated for sweet items such as berries and fruit, or items that add to his dreaded duck collection. (It appears he is particularly adept at hiding them when cleaning staff are sanitising his enclosure, as I haven’t been able to locate them for removal much to my disappointment.)

Today I risked entering the enclosure with a small gift of food. I had thought him perhaps in his nest, but was surprised by his sudden appearance before me from above. I have made a note about how silent his species seems to be, and how ambush is not only a hunting tactic, but way of life for these creatures.

He did not attack, however. He seemed far more interested in inspecting my attire, undoing and redoing buttons, and attempting to imitate speech patterns he had heard through the glass, despite his species’ lack of humanoid vocal cords. He is displaying a level of intelligence far higher than that of the chimps we had thought shared the same understanding and grasp of tools as him. However, despite his seeming comfort touching me, each time I raised my hand to initiate contact he was quick to retreat to a distance and rattle his scales in warning.

I endeavour to continue these in person studies, and do not hold the company liable for any injury.

Our resident subject 666 has taken to sleeping by the large front panel of his enclosure, I believe due to its advantage of strong sun first thing in the morning. Usually arboreal, seeing Lucifer this close has been exceptionally intriguing. Like this, I am able to get a good assessment on his health and development, rather than relying on darting or his latest shed to examine. This close I am able to see his condition, and with the exception of perhaps needing a little more omega 3 in his diet to reduce the dullness of his scales, he seems to be in his prime. Perhaps this season he’ll be suitable for the breeding program again.

His last attempt was disastrous. The mate we paired him with took a violent turn, leaving him maimed and afraid. Even though successful in bringing forth our dear subject Charlie, Lucifer refused to be paired again, acting out, seemingly traumatised by his previous attempt at bonding. Regardless, we do need to ensure the species continues due to their rarity, so perhaps we can find another way.
