I've been dreading writing this post. Every time I type it, I get this unbearable, visceral feeling in the pit of my stomach, but I wanted to give you all an update. I will keep it brief. As much hope as we all had for her recovery, and as much as the doctors continued working on her as much as they could, it wasn't enough and my sister has lost her battle with liver failure. horror musings now that horror season is nearly upon us tw: space, space-related fictional death, existentialism also, spoilers for mickey7 by edward ashton

so the book mickey7 is fascinating in concept but also a bit... shallow? it doesn't have much story to it, its world is a little bare, its side characters have meh characteristics (they're all kiiiiinda jerks). but the core concept of an Expendable, of a person who has to contemplate their mortality, is a good one. and despite the weird pacing and uh. copy-related sex scene. despite all that, there's this one scene that really hit me, in my favorite way. on the journey from one planet to another, the titular mickey is enlisted to fix a hull breach on a ship moving at nearly the speed of light. he's exposed to acute radiation and slowly feels his body failing as he fixes a broken mechanism, wishing he could have popped the seals of his helmet to end it all faster. instead, he's retrieved and his memory is uploaded (for his next iteration to learn from) before his body finally fails.

immediately, he's sent right back out to fix the physical hole in the hull as mickey2. mickey narrates what mickey2 did and saw based on his suit's camera because this time, when trying to make it back into the ship, mickey2 "stopped moving, popped the seals at my collar, and showed my naked face to the universe." it's morbid and ghoulish, especially with all of the real ways that people die and all of the new ways human beings find to torture each other, but there's this strange catharsis I feel with this kind of fictional death. it's the feeling of choice and the solitary nature of death, of things at the end of it all not depending on the greater good or the selfish desires of a conglomerate. it's the same feeling I got from the game soma and I got from the murderbot diaries book series. it's this bleak but beautiful exploration of humanity, the phrasing "my naked face to the universe" being something that fills me with sadness but also a weird kind of majesty. human beings are capable of some truly superhuman things, mentally and physically, and something about facing the world, the universe, full of cold apathy, with your humanity intact? I find it beautiful.

excerpt from Jerusalem Kestone of an Arab-Israeli Settlement - United States Interest in the Middle East "For the past two years, Israel has ruled over the Jordanian sector of Jerusalem. In the face of concern by the world community that Israel is altering the status of the Jordanian sector of the holy city, or "East Jerusalem" as it is now termed, the Jewish state has continued to implement its political, legal, economic, and demographic plans to integrate this part of occupied Jordan with the State of Israel.
Of all the outstanding issues of the Arab-Israeli conflict, that of East Jerusalem may well prove to be the most difficult of all to resolve. The Arab states are adamant that East Jerusalem be returned to the Arabs; the Muslim community, representing one-fifth of all mankind, has vigorously expressed its opposition to Israeli "unification" of East and West Jerusalem; the Roman Catholic church stands opposed to the unilateral action of Israel with regard to East Jerusalem;3 the National Council of Churches has expressed its opposition to this action by Israel; and the United Nations has repeatedly called upon Israel to rescind its action relative to East Jerusalem. Furthermore, not one country has recognized this unilateral action taken by Israel. Nevertheless, Israel has not found it com- patible with her interests to heed these calls from abroad. In fact, Israeli political leaders simply refuse to discuss the matter, declaring that the question of Jerusalem is not negotiable.
Since the framework of proposed settlement of the Arab-Israeli dispute is the Security Council's unanimous resolution of November 22, 1967, the Israeli position makes the prospects for peace in the Middle East difficult to envisage, for the first point of the U.N. resolution calls for "withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict."
