Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026See back in the day, that was countered by making games that were more substantial than just their multiplayer. Games like that benefit more by being digital, sure, but then the digital copy is also meaningless in that case so this argument is also dumb. I never said digital should be cut out either 000
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026That’s a dumb argument against disks. If that’s your problem then 1. Take it up with the government and 2. It’s not like piracy is all that well policed. If you buy a gun but can’t just go out and shoot people because that’s illegal, do you not own the gun still? Understand how dumb that sounds? 000
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Here’s the question: because you can’t play those games on the modern consoles, does that mean you no longer own them? That’s a stupid point because you can still play them on your old consoles. Lack of backwards compatibility doesn’t mean you don’t own your games, you wouldn’t own your cartridges. 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026This is a completely different conversation. This doesn’t benefit either of our arguments so I don’t know why you’re bringing it up. Physical games need to be protected for preservation, ownership, and option integrity. Physical and digital both have a place but cutting one out is a definitive loss 000
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026But realistically when have you ever heard of that situation ever actually happening? The closest I could ever think to that is region locking or no backwards compatibility, but I doubt those are what you mean. Whereas we know how digital games can be taken from us like PT was. 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026The problem is that, if PlayStation tried that, you and I both know that the backlash would be so biblical that what we’re going through here would look like little kids playing war compared to what would be. Not to mention that it’s so rare there’s no well known instances of that 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026The thing is, keeping disks around for now means that when something better does come, it isn’t pointless. Keeping disks around is an important step to honoring consumer rights because getting rid of them leaves console store front monopolies. Multiple things can be true 000
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026The thing is, your argument is that ownership needs to be maintained. This point right here doesn’t mean anything if you don’t own your entire collection. Your entire digital collection could be taken away in a snap and suddenly you own nothing. Digital does nothing for game preservation either 200
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026It literally is, PlayStation doesn’t need to cut off physical media at all. There’s no benefit to them doing this given just how much backlash they’ve been receiving for it. You say disks are legacy items, but there’s no reason why we can’t create something better when we’ve done that numerous times 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026That isn’t comparable at all. Keep in mind, those games you and your kids can share can still be taken away. Plus, I’ve done that whole account on two different consoles thing with my uncle and it was incredibly cumbersome. Also, not everybody is going to have that scenario 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026I agree that companies want control, but I feel you’re looking at the problem all wrong. I agree that customer ownership is very important but it’s not strictly just that. Media format isn’t a distraction because companies are trying to cut off an entire facet of that format; that’s why we are here 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026That isn’t as much of a counter as you think it is. You can still do anything with a physical copy. I mentioned stuff you have no trouble doing with a physical disk that you can’t do with a digital copy 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Companies can do that much easier with digital games so there’s no point. Why block physical games from being played when you risk less legal trouble going all digital and then taking away the licenses for digital games? 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026You’re not permitted to copy anything on disk, not exclusively PS or Xbox. That’s called piracy. Not that you’ll actually get in trouble for it, but that’s a silly argument for why you don’t own anything on disk 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026That’s a different concept entirely. Besides, as I said, blocking a physical game is rarer than taking away access to a digital game. Honestly, your argument would be stronger if you went down the route that the disks will wear out eventually. Another reason why physical is better: preservation 000
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026I don’t see how you think a physical game is fake ownership. You can do anything you want with a physical copy; play on multiple different consoles, sell it, destroy it, anything. You can’t do that with digital, at least not without jumping through hoops. People still own the games on cartridge. 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026That’s not how ownership works. Just because a console can stop playing a physical game does not mean you stop owning said game. Doing that is even more scummy than taking away a digital game which is why that’s even rarer. 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Like I said earlier, we need a new replacement for disks and digital isn’t it. I know this because, if digital was truly the next step, nobody would be complaining about this whole situation. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate digital, but when it’s the only option it’s objectively bad 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Those are all true, however the problem with those drawbacks are that those problems are all due to human error, not strictly because they’re physical. Yes, digital is convenient compared to physical, but that’s all it really is. Besides, digital games can be taken away too, much easier in fact (PT) 000
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Disks, sure, but the jump from disks to digital is a much larger and more different jump than from floppy disks or cartridges to disks we know today. Disks aren’t a distraction, they’re a way to keep physical alive until we find something truly better and digital isn’t it. Disks ensure ownership 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026That’s a problem more with how gaming has evolved because, ideally, the entirety of your base game should be on disk. DLC I understand can’t be on disk, but fans have complained about DLCs in some form for years now. In the end, physical needs to have a space in gaming, it only benefits having it 100
Hi I’m Red :) @reddeath5.bsky.social · 04/08/2026It’s not just ownership, it’s also how much store owners like Sony can price for games, how much space is used on the console, and the console storefronts being monopolies. That’s why physical is inherently better and beneficial and, while I only half agree, why game key cards aren’t a good idea 110
