Sharing today's quick sketch attempt. One should practice drawing the human figure with paid, bare-assed human models...but it's cheaper and more fun to draw musicians (clothed). #2 HB pencil on Strathmore 400 Series recycled, acid-free, 60# paper. #sketchpractice #bluegrass #music
Small wire-ringed sketchbook open to a rough pencil drawing of eight bluegrass musicians seated in a circle playing various string instruments - 3 guitars, 2 banjos, dobro, fiddle and upright bass. Caption reads "Maysville Bluegrass Jam, July 1, 2025." A plastic mechanical pencil lies next to the sketchbook.

A lot of rain = lots of different toadstools and mushrooms! Sharing an older cartoon with photos of recent fungi pop-ups.
Headline at top: "How to tell mushrooms from toadstools." 1. Top left panel depicts two different umbrella-shaped fungi. The grey, smooth-capped one is labeled "Mushroom". The yellow, bumpy one with a thick stalk is labeled "Toadstool". Caption below them says "Mushrooms have smooth caps." 2. The top right panel bears a closeup of the gills that line the underside of the smooth fungi. Caption below it says "And gills." 3. The next panel at lower left shows the same two fungi and that one has a thick stalk. It is captioned "Toadstools have thick stalks -" 4. The fourth panel at lower right shows a small man in green and brown clothing taking a nap as he lies against the toadstool stalk. Caption says "- and attract gnomes."Plate-sized, light brown mushroom cap. Next to it for size comparison is a foot wearing a dark blue sneaker. Sneaker and mushroom cap are both about the same length.White, popcorn-shaped fungi (a toadstool?) bigger than the toe of the shoe that is placed next to it for size comparisonAnother unidentified species of large mushroom. The cap, the color of caramel and bright orange, is also nearly the size of the sneaker-clad foot next to it.

#CartoonistsClub book tour tips #3: Be creative with audience help. #4: Show kids how to brainstorm ideas. “What kind of story could these pictures illustrate?” One reply: "A seal sees a girl learning karate, and learns it and takes over the world!” @scottmccloud.bsky.social @goraina.bsky.social
Foreground: Kids in audience facing a stage raise hands to suggest stories inspired by a sequence of three photos depicted on a large screen that hangs above the stage. Standing on stage in front of the screen, left to right, Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud face the audience. McCloud is holding a microphone to his mouth and appears to be speaking. Three large photos featured on the screen depict, at left: a girl in a martial arts class facing right; at center: a seal's head rising out of water and facing the camera; at right: a young boy and old bearded man seated on a couch high-fiving each other. The three photos were selected from many smaller photos that are aligned in rows above and below the large featured photos.

Kids book tour tip #2: Instead of drawing solo, draw using audience suggestions. Raina designed a badge for the #CartoonistsClub (Atlanta chapter), with design and motto help from the audience. (The winning motto: "It's not Art if it's not Messy.") #graphixbooks #littleshopofstories #cartooning
Drawing of a gold-colored shield shape with a red ribbon hanging from it. In the center of the shield is a star. On the shield above and below the star are the words "It's not Art if it's not Messy." The word "if" is inside the star.

Kids book tour tip #1: Get kids excited. Kiki the cat & Rags the dog, pictured in the cartoon, figured in an "argument" between @goraina.bsky.social and @scottmccloud.bsky.social over which animal was best. The audience took sides and cheered enthusiastically. #CartoonistsClub #cartooning
Two adult speakers stand holding microphones on a stage in front of and below a big film screen. On the screen behind them is a cartoon drawing of the speakers labeled "About Us...". Below the words, at left: Raina Telgemeier, drawn wearing eyeglasses, jeans and a short-sleeved shirt, sitting cross-legged and holding a mouse-shaped toy in her left hand. On the floor around her are sheets of paper, pencils, an iPad, and an orange cat. At right: Scott McCloud, also wearing eyeglasses, t-shirt, jacket and jeans, sits at a desk, facing left, drawing a picture of a lightbulb (representing an idea) on an upright computer screen. To his right, just below his left elbow, a dog's head peeps over the desk. Below the screen, left to right: the real-life Raina stands under her caricature and gestures towards Scott standing at the right below his caricature.

“Now when I see a blank page, I think about all the things you can do with it. Comics are all about potential.” - @scottmccloud.bsky.social, on overcoming his fear of drawing on new (“good”) paper. Cartoonists Club book tour, Decatur, GA, April 8, 2025. (Thank you, #littleshopofstories!)
Scott McCloud stands smiling on a stage. He stands in front of and below a large screen, which hangs in front of dark curtains. On the screen is a drawing of a school notebook containing lined paper, plus a pen, pencil and eraser, and the words: "Reason #1 Anyone Can Make Comics!" In the foreground can be seen the backs of heads of a couple people in the audience, as they face away from the camera and towards McCloud.

Ah, Spring. . #Spring #flowers #birdnest #nests #pollen #allergies
Person on left, looking up at a mostly bare tree on the right, at a lone pink flower that has just bloomed. Yellow dust swirls from the flower in the branches. Flower blooming sound effect: "Pop!" The person exclaims "Ah!" Same scene. More pink flowers burst into bloom. Sfx: "Pop!" "Pop!" "Pop!" More yellow dust. Person leans back while looking up and exclaims "Ahh!" Up in the tree, a bluebird brings a twig to an empty nest.Same scene. Many more pink flowers are bursting into bloom all over the tree. Sfx: "Pop!" "Pop!" "Pop!" "Pop!" “Pop!”, etc. The bluebird now sits on a nest full of eggs. There is more yellow dust swirling in the sky, over the tree, around the trunk, over the ground and by the person. The person leans back further, exclaiming "Ahhhhh!"The tree is now covered with pink blooms. Yellow-orange dust fills the air. The person leans forward and sneezes a HUGE sneeze. Sfx: "CHOO!" written in very large letters. Yellow, orange and light green particles spew from the person's nose and mouth and over and through the letters of the sound effect, towards the tree. Pink petals litter the ground where the force of the sneeze has blown them off the branches. The bluebird flies away from its nest of eggs and the force of the sneeze.

To post or not to post. Social media is healthier in small doses, but I go through periods of heavy use, too. (A cartoon I drew a few years ago.) #socialmedia #cartoon #mentalhealth #goodmorning
Four panel color cartoon. Panel 1, upper left: Person asleep in bed in a dark room. Alarm clock buzzes. The clock screen reads '6:00 a.m.' Panel 2, upper right: Same person, a woman, stands sleepily next to a coffee-maker as it pours coffee into a mug. The colors are mostly grey. Panel 3, lower left: The woman, eyes squinted shut, sits at a table with a mug of coffee. Her surroundings are a lighter grey. A window behind her shows a sun rising outside, with a little color in the landscape. A smartphone next to her on the table makes a buzzing noise. Panel 4, lower right: The woman holds up the smartphone towards her face. It blasts bright colors and the words "Look! Look! Look!", into her face. The blast of color and words partially obscure her face and fill the top half of the panel. She squints at the screen and her hair blows backwards, as if she is looking into a strong wind.

Quick sketch practice while watching a community theater production of To Kill a Mockingbird. Photography not allowed during a show, but there are no rules against sketching! Mechanical pencil (No. 2B lead, 0.5mm) in 3" x 4" travel journal, acid-free 74# paper.
Heavy-set Black man with close-cropped beard along chin and jawline, wearing overalls and long-sleeved shirt buttoned at neck, seated facing left. Right hand palm down on right leg, left arm resting on left leg, fist closed as if crippled. His shadow falls on a judge's desk that rises behind him, its vertical wood panels reminiscent of jail bars. Handwritten label reads "Rickey Leware as Tom Robinson, To Kill a Mockingbird," 3-2-25."Rough pencil sketch, H: 3" x W:4". At left a young tomboyish girl in pigtails and torn overalls seated on brick porch support, leaning forward facing one-quarter left, elbows resting on knees. Behind her in upper center an older woman stands on a porch. She wears a calf-length dress with short, "butterfly" style (floppy) shoulder sleeves, and an apron over the dress. She is holding a shallow, open basket. Behind her is a dark, closed screen door. Handwritten label reads "Scout & Mrs. Atkinson, "To Kill a Mockingbird," Hartwell Community Theater."Left foreground: a large White seated in a chair faces the viewer. He has a long, unkempt beard and is wearing overalls with rolled-up shirtsleeves underneath. He holds a hat in his left hand (viewer's right). His right hand rests on his right knee. Directly behind him an American flag on a pole leans to the left. Behind and above him in the center sits a balding judge in a business suit, a neatly trimmed beard along his jawline. The judge is looking down at the long-bearded man. Handwriting reads "Robert Roach as Bob Ewell, To Kill a Mockingbird, Hartwell Community Theater, March 2, 2025."Young, chubby-faced White girl in pigtails, appears to be age seven or eight. Overalls torn near knees, sleeves of shirt gather at elbows and flare decoratively. Overall pants are rolled above ankles, sockless sneakers. Hands in side pockets, smiling. Me: What do you want to watch tonight? Partner: The Gorge. It's a science-fiction-action-romance-horror film. Me: Well that ticks all the boxes. . #TheGorgeFilm #MilesTeller #AnyaTaylorJoy #AppleTV #ValentinesDayMovie
Inside a nearly-empty cinema as viewed from the back row towards the screen. On the screen is a serious-looking woman and man, both dressed in dark, military-style clothing and positioned back-to-back, shooting guns at attacking skeletons. The bullets pierce the skulls with written sound effects: "Blam!" "Krak!". A tentacle-like vine from above the man wraps itself around his waist. Other vines drip from the ceiling. Below the screen are rows of empty seats and the back heads of a short-haired man and long-haired woman watching the film. They share a bag of popcorn between them.
