As expected, New Jersey's draconian e-bike laws are biting in a totally negative way Jason Fenton, owner of Halter's Cycles, Skillman NJ explains what S4834 has done for businesses who only ever supplied in-class e-bikes, and are already under severe economic stress #bikesky #localbikeshop
Cycling Industry Recovery - Fb
Jason A Fenton, owner Halter's Cycles

As a dealer based in New Jersey, I must warn those in other states about the strong downturn in the sales of pedal assist bicycles ("e-bikes") that comes when your home state vilifies all things ebikes. The public here has grown a strong distaste for ebikes as all you see is anti-ebike sentiment on social media. It is critical that we as an industry work hard to avoid a national ebike policy that matches the moronic policy here in NJ. As it stands, myself and other dealers as struggling to sell ebikes on our shop floors for the wholesale prices we paid. To be clear, what we sell are indeed legal (in NJ), they just now require registration. This very much seems to be a huge turn-off to any potential buyer. My belief is that if this sort of legislation becomes a national policy, we may see the biggest crash in the bike industry in decades. Ironically, this law seems to do little to diminish the sale and use of now illegal E-motos across the state.

We want to hear from you‼️
ANY WAY this new law has affected you- tell us about it!

The new E-Bike Law takes effect July 19th and we’ve already heard from many riders about registration issues:
⚠️ Being charged an unrequired registration fee
⚠️ Unclear classifications requirements
⚠️ E-motos receiving low-speed electric bicycle stickers

WE want to hear it all! How has your business been affected, trouble qualifying for a license, expensive insurance, enforcement, etc.

Your story will help document the law’s real-world impacts and help strengthen the case for new legislation this fall.

Hillsborough T'ship intends to chip seal Montgomery Rd, one of the last historic gravel roads in New Jersey, a focus for cyclists and competitors in the famous Hell of Hunterdon event Tell them. Keep the gravel! Hillsboro' T'ship: (908) 369-4313 aferrera@hillsboroughnj.gov see ALT #bikesky
Hillsborough T'ship: (908) 369-4313 aferrera@hillsboroughnj.gov

I am a local resident and a regular cyclist who frequently uses Montgomery Road. I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed chip sealing of Montgomery Road.
Montgomery Road is one of the area's historic gravel roads and is an important part of the rural character that makes Hillsborough and the surrounding region unique. These roads reflect the agricultural heritage and scenic landscape that residents and visitors alike value and seek to preserve.
In addition, Montgomery Road has long been a cherished route within the local cycling community. Gravel roads such as Montgomery Road are integral to classic area cycling events and rides that attract participants from throughout New Jersey and beyond. The road's existing character contributes to the region's reputation as a destination for cycling and outdoor recreation.
Converting this historic gravel road through chip sealing would permanently alter a distinctive feature of our community and diminish an important aspect of the area's identity. Once these roads are changed, their historic and recreational value cannot easily be restored.
I respectfully urge the Township to preserve Montgomery Road in its current form and consider the long-term cultural, historical, and recreational benefits that this road provides to residents and visitors.
Thank you for your consideration and for your continued service to the residents of Hillsborough Township. I would appreciate having my comments entered into the public record regarding this project.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
Hillsborough ResidentGravel cycling, gravel biking or gravel grinding[1] is a sport or a leisure activity in which participants ride bicycles on gravel roads or other unpaved surfaces. While often performed on a specially designed gravel bike, any bicycle capable of covering the terrain can be used.

Gravel cycling bridges the gap between road cycling and mountain biking,[2] combining the efficiency of road cycling with the capability to ride on rough and loose terrain of mountain biking. It allows riders more freedom to choose routes than road cycling, without many of the physical and equipment-related barriers of mountain biking.[2] Gravel cycling is nearly as old as cycling itself, with most significant developments in the racing side having occurred in the 20th century. Gravel racing as a discipline has its own global series and world championship.
