Welp!
Excerpt that reads: Because of who's in charge. You've read a million pearl-clutching op-eds about woke professors and cancel culture, but for my money, the real crisis facing American higher education is that colleges and universities are increasingly run by people who are hostile to students and professors, and who are frequently hostile to the idea of the university itself.
For much of the 20th century, institutions of higher learning in the U.S. operated under a model of shared governance. Students and staff had means of influencing the direction of university policy, faculty had broad power over day-to-day operations, and boards of trustees acted under advisement from both groups. In the 1970s, however, after postwar investment in higher education started dwindling, trustees moved to take almost all the practical power for themselves.Excerpt that reads: The result is that the people who perform the activities you probably think of when you think of college-teaching, studying, writing books, playing intramural volleyball, eating 2 a.m. Cheetos in the library- exert little influence over what the institution does.
And the people who do exert influence often have little to do with the life of the institution itself. They don't work or study there; they just call the shots. And you know how sophisticated sports analysts love to say, "The commissioner doesn't work for the fans, he works for the owners"? Well, college presidents, deans, and administrators don't work for students, parents, or faculty members. They work for the trustees.Excerpt that reads: When you understand that this is how universities work, many things that might have struck you as odd quickly start to make sense.
Why did so many institutions of higher education surrender to the Trump
administration's extortion tactics last year
when their students, faculties, and alumni were screaming for them to fight back? Because their administrations answer to the boards, and the boards didn't want to take any risks that could disrupt the steady flow of business. Why are universities spending millions on AI and dubious EdTech systems when their own students are booing AI at graduation ceremonies? Because board members love the tech industry and are often invested in its success. Excerpt that reads: This is how you end up with an elite university where the president can drive his car into a group of students and be lauded by the board.
The president and the trustees are on the same team. The students are on the other team. The trustees know Kotlikoff will reliably enforce their agenda, including cracking down on protests that might be bad for cashflow. It almost doesn't matter what he does; if there's any conceivable defense, they'll keep him in place. (If not, they'll replace him with someone else who can talk about loving free speech while moving to crush it in practice.) Kotlikoff, after all, has already proved his worth: It was on his watch that Cornell agreed to pay $60 million to the U.S. government to get Trump to unfreeze its research grants.

“The Revolt Against the Girl Bosses Has Finally Come” by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social 🔥 www.nytimes.com/2026/05/15/o...
Excerpt from the article: Witherspoon, Robbins and Grede are archetypes for dreams too long deferred.
Their brands promised us that in a scary world all we needed was a little bit more money to be less afraid. That message belies the truth that women can see with their own eyes. Once, women bought into their message. They earned educational credentials only to be told that they shut men out of schooling. They delayed childbearing to start competitive careers; now their political leaders are telling them that they're failing at making enough babies.
They started businesses and brands and built side hustles; now they're being told that they did not do it enough or the right way or for the right people.

Screenshot of the reader’s question and the first paragraph of the columnist’s response:

Ever since my 40-year-old boss discovered ChatGPT, he's running everything through it, even asking it to write drajts and analyze documents. I'm going on 60 and have spent my entire work life relying on my brain and bona fide resources to do my work.
Now, I'll write up a draft of something, and I'll hear, "OK, just run that through ChatGPT." Or "Can you ask ChatGPT if XYZ?" I've explained that ChatGPT is NOT always correct, and have literally pointed to specific examples. Also, I'll give him a draft of something that I wrote, and he'll revise it, via ChatGPT, and ask me to review an often completely inappropriate, lengthy off-point rendition.
Help!

A tragic fact about bosses is that many of them have never built up a natural immune defense to "stupid ideas." Because of this, a boss opening LinkedIn can be like a young child attending day care for the first time. An insufficiently immunized supervisor can send an entire business into a tailspin by merely glancing at a post consisting of single-sentence paragraphs.

Finally, some serious journalism (non-sarcastic). www.nytimes.com/2026/04/03/u...
Indeed, among roughly two dozen workers and regulars interviewed this week at Rome's three Waffle House locations, none said they were aware of anyone traveling to the 24-hour restaurants by paranormal means, despite their reputation as powerful magnets for the sort of idiosyncratic characters who tend to surf the psychic fringes of the American South.Grant Sikes, 20, a student at nearby Berry College who hopes to attend an Episcopal seminary one day, said that divine power, from his experience, expressed itself in more subtle ways. He said he felt the presence of God at that moment, as he wrapped up a late, mellow breakfast with his grandfather, Larry Kellogg, 83.
Austin Spears, 29, a land surveyor, also found Mr. Phillips's story to be dubious. But he also acknowledged that all human lives are studded with little mysteries.
"I can say I've been drunk and ended up in a Waffle House," Mr. Spears said. "Don't know how I got there. But I was there."

Screenshot of an excerpt from the article that reads: Conservatives' fundamental problem is that they cannot compete with major universities, in the way that conservative political candidates can compete with liberals in election campaigns. Many of America's leading corporations are less than a hundred years old; few of its leading research universities are. To acquire a large tract of land in a population center, put up dozens of buildings, create a full suite of academic departments, and add the professional schools and hospitals that support the universities' scholarly activities economically—it's all but impossible. Screenshot of an excerpt from the article that reads: Conservatives are likely never going to be able to create universities they approve of that are anywhere near the level of the universities some of them would like to destroy. But that does not mean that universities are going to get beyond the crisis of the past couple of years intact— that a truly effective collective resistance will emerge, or that the moment will pass, or that the public will become aware of how valuable the universities are.Screenshot of an excerpt from the article that reads: Back in the days when the system that is now under attack was being invented, Clark Kerr gave a lecture at Harvard in which he posed this question: "How may the contributions of the élite be made clear to the egalitarians, and how may an aristocracy of intellect justify itself to all men?" People who spend their lives in universities think they know the answer— medical breakthroughs, opportunities for future leaders from humble backgrounds, the expansion of knowledge-but the public, evidently, isn't persuaded. Can the government, even in different hands, forget what it has learned in the past year about how easy it is to get universities to give it the deference that businesses give their largest customers? It seems unlikely.

“The culture war is an actual war.” www.vanityfair.com/news/story/t...
Excerpt from the article: For years a certain kind of liberal has either minimized such culture-war
rhetoric coming from the other side or urged political actors of all stripes to ignore it in favor of "material" or "kitchen table" issues—as though the state regarding one's life as "garbage" has no tangible consequence, as if the terms of a fight can be determined by the person getting punched. But Trump has clarified an inconvenient fact—the culture war is an actual war. ICE, full of myrmidons of The Homeland, enjoys an $85 billion budget, a sum "larger than the annual military budget of every country in the world except the United States and China," as Caitlin Dickerson reported…

Screenshot of an excerpt of the article that reads: "Beginning in the early 2000s, the legal constraints on war began to erode. After Al Qaeda’s devastating attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, the United States began to use force throughout the Middle East against those it deemed to be a terrorist threat. To justify continuing the strikes and extending them to a range of terrorist groups in what some would later call 'the forever war,' the United States claimed a novel legal right under the U.N. Charter: to defend itself against nonstate groups that it said posed a threat.
Up to that point, it had been generally accepted among U.N. members that the right of self-defense in the charter extended only to threats posed by other states. By expanding this claim to threats posed by nonstate groups, the United States opened the door for other states to use unilateral force internationally under a legal guise. Over the next decade or so, more and more governments adopted the theory.
By 2014, the consequences of this shift started to emerge."

My sister’s take as someone who lives in a small town about 45 minutes away and had to visit that school for games. (Emoji over her name for privacy)
Sister: As a former cheer coach, north middle quite literally was the worst school I've ever dealt with middle or high so I am not surprised at all by the behavior of car rider line parents and would even go so far as to say serves them right
Me: Yeah the person who shared this said at a certain point the parents must WANT this because it makes them feel like busy soccer moms
Sister: Like I cannot reiterate this enough, from admin, sro, down to parents never seen a school be just that rude, uppity, disrespectful, tacky, and just suck lol so yes I would say that assessment fits my experience
