Dear Correspondent:
Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding allegations of the unauthorized use of Alberta’s list of electors. As the Minister of Justice, I appreciate the opportunity to provide the following information.
The Government of Alberta is aware of the situation and takes the protection of Albertans’ personal information very seriously. Elections Alberta is responsible for administering provincial elections and ensuring election laws are followed. It is my understanding that Elections Alberta is taking action in this matter.
You may also wish to view Elections Alberta’s news releases on this and related topics, including:

Why did Elections Alberta not start an investigation sooner?
Who has the information and how is it being used?
What steps can be taken to prevent a similar situation in the future?
What is the impact on citizen initiative petitions?
Consequential amendments to the signature verification processes.
Update: What happens now; Ensuring your privacy is protected.
It is also my understanding that the RCMP and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta are reviewing the matter. As the Honourable Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, noted on May 1, 2026, the Government of Alberta will wait for the results of those investigations before commenting further.
Thank you once again for writing and for sharing your concerns with the Alberta government.
Sincerely,
