I Come from Soil, Grit, and River
NOTE: I originally journaled this longhand on Sept. 2, 2026, a week out of ICU and a day after my second kidney surgery. Yesterday, part of the infected kidney stone was removed and a new stent placed. I am placed in charge of removing the stent on my own on Sunday. I already feel better with my kidney now flowing, much like steam released in a tea kettle.

Sometimes, Deprivation is a Choice
NOTE: My entries are published non-linearly, offered to the world based only on courage. Today’s entry was originally penned on September 8th. Here, I’m ready to share. * Let me tell you, I’m amazed with my body. I can’t tell you if I’ve ever, across my sixty years, simply witnessed her miraculousness. After each baby pushed through, I tortured her back—however I defined back—each time.

With Deep Gratitude for Toast and Stents
Yesterday I pulled my stent out. The surgeon instructed this post-op, though I barely remember her guidance. Blood. Warm bath. Meds. Pain. The day before, I bled-peed all day. This too, expected. Still, when you witness your body pouring blood through an orifice that should not bleed. Yesterday I prepped stent-pulling with a strong dose of Tylenol. I don’t ingest pain meds.

When Black Coffee Sits Sweetly
(Substack Post Dated Sept 1st, 2026) Tomorrow brings surgery. My 17th or 19th while in this bag of skin. When I leave this world, I’ll leave lighter, fewer organs and rage than the state in which I arrived. Today. I make a list of nourishing things: cool morning breeze, cricket choruses, fire pits and poetry, slow reading and even slower writing, pausing to push mundane tasks—dishwashing, dusting, laundering—into meditative moments of restoration.

When a Rogue Stone Wakes You
Wednesday, August 19th, my body fetaled, severe cramps spasming my lower abs and left flank. Probably a kidney stone, I thought. Maybe food poisoning. I dry heaved every ten minutes and thought, Manageable. Part of me feels like I could CLEP out of Med School after nurturing and nursing my son through 42 procedures, post-op home care, and over 60 hospitalizations.

Talk about a story. Talk about the ability to talk about a story. Meet Michael Archer, Vietnam combat veteran and survivor of Khe Sanh. Vietnam veterans silenced themselves upon their terribly unwelcomed return. Michael has been acornerstone in unsilencing these stories.

There's an origin story to everything. At least there's what feels like a beginning, a lineage to where you've currently landed. This is true of my Free Little Libraries. I hope you find meaning in my moment. I hope you find beauty in everything. I hope you hold love wherever you go.

How much I love this opportunity. Each month invites local writers to read short pieces of prose or poetry based on a theme. June's theme is memory. In honor of memory, one of the pieces I chose to read was Lee Herrick's "The Mosquito." I hope you enjoy this listen.

A blurb is a huge ask. Writers are underpaid & undervalued in our country. They work beyond the page; teaching, crafting, while creating. I'm ever-grate-full to have such a generous writer pause, read my work, and respond with love. If you've not read Kim's works, you've been robbed!

Something unexpected happened — I made it to the Quarter-Finals of The People's Artist. I teach teens in the juvenile system who are court-ordered into my program. If I win this $25,000, every dollar goes into my program for these teens. You can vote for free, once a day. Just a click.

The People’s Artist Award, presented by Johnny Depp on August 6th, 2026 and I can hardly believe that I've made it this far, the top 5!! And I'm first in my group. If I win, I plan to expand the critical work I offer in the Juvenile detention center. Info on voting in comments.
