Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Hi! Sometimes the website glitches. The link in my bio seems to be working. 110 1
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Happy #DVPit day! I’ll be popping in and out. If I like your pitch, please include DVPit in the subject and follow the link below for guidelines. Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026An author does not have to hire an editor to get an agent. That is an author’s personal decision if they choose to do so. Authors can find writing/critique groups, beta readers, etc. for feedback to help with revisions. Social media is one place to start. #AskDv 0151 15
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026You can note it in your query if you’d like. But this is a conversation that an author and agent should have during a prospective phone call. An author can ask agents any questions to make sure it’s a good partnership and vice versa if the agent is unsure if they can be a good fit. #AskDv 160 6
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026This is going to be pretty vague, apologies, but a lot of times it comes down to execution of the manuscript Maybe an agent expected something different with a plot or character. It’s entirely subjective. #AskDv 0110 11
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026If you’re writing nonfiction, your bio is very important because you’re the “expert” on the topic you’re writing. If it’s fiction, anything you feel comfortable sharing. Any past writing publications, school, or career paths are helpful. Fun facts are not necessary but make me smile. #AskDv 080 8
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026If you’re writing nonfiction, an author’s platform is important, so yes. If it’s fiction, social media is not required but it is helpful to reach future readers. Sometimes I do look at social media if it’s available, but it doesn’t sway my decision on whether or not I like a manuscript. #AskDv 170 7
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I can’t speak for everyone, but I think noting that the character is neurodivergent in the query is enough. #AskDv 150 5
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I think they are! Those are usually pitched as contemporary or urban fantasy. It’s all about how the fantasy/magical elements are explored/explained in this world that matters. Every agent and editor has different taste, though. #AskDv 160 6
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026This will vary slightly by story, but the inciting incident should happen fairly early. Probably between 10-15% of the way into the manuscript. #AskDv 171 7
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026For a DvPit pitch, it’s important for me to know the stakes and the character from the pitch. Interesting comps are a bonus, but also very helpful for an agent to later pitch to an editor. #AskDv 0131 13
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I can’t speak for every agent, but I’d consider a project that is longer if I have a clear vision on how to help revise and maybe make the manuscript shorter. I actually just answered another question on how to trim word count, so if you check out my quote tweets, I hope that helps as well! #AskDv 1100 10
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Yes, there can definitely be an adult mystery with speculative/paranormal elements. A lot of agents and editors are looking for twists on genre. #AskDv 041 4
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Yes it’s okay to re-query a manuscript that has undergone revisions and just note that to the agent. However, if the agent passed for a specific reason, such as not representing the age, genre, etc., it’s important to consider if that agent’s wish list has changed. #AskDv 030 3
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I don’t outright reject any query, but if it doesn’t follow agency guidelines, it does make me more hesitant to take on the project. I know agency guidelines vary, but it’s especially important when submitting a sample—whether that’s a certain number of chapters, pages, or manuscripts. #AskDv 040 4
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Yes, I have passed on a manuscript where the pitch, story, or character was too similar to something one of my clients was working on. “Sitting on the same shelf” can also be a bit broader and just reference age and genre. #AskDv 161 6
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Aside from filler words, looking at scene, subplot, and character could help. Do all scenes do at least two things: advance the plot, show theme, raise the stakes, and/or help character(s)? Could any character be combined and/or cut? What purpose does a subplot serve to the overall narrative? #AskDv 082 8
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Agents and editors will have different opinions on word count. I recommend 60,000 max for a MG fantasy (including upper) since middle grade as a whole has been shorter lately. It may be better if an MG fantasy is lower than that. And I usually suggest 100,000 for a YA. #AskDv 262 6
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Excited to hop on this afternoon! I just want to note that all of my responses are opinions based on my experience. Publishing is a subjective industry, so some answers may differ from agent to agent. 061 6
Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I’ve been doing this for years. It really does help. 000 0

Rebecca @rebeccaw04.bsky.social · 11/05/2026I just got a shipping notice for two preorders I’m super excited about and realized I’m running out of room for my books. I’ve got a book cart and many book stacks on my floor. There are several giant storage bins of books in my basement. I can’t wait for the day when I have walls of bookshelves. 050 5
