Years ago my family played a game of Parcheesi, starting out as a perfectly friendly game. Then someone read the rules about sending other players back home and it devolved from there, to the point none of us have touched Parcheesi since then. Fortunately we’re all still speaking with each other!

Bill Cassidy-I’m a doctor. This executive order is wrong. Vaccines are safe, effective, and DO NOT cause autism. Breaking up vaccines will increase hesitancy and make children less safe.

Yes, let’s burden both new parents and pediatricians with FIVE doctor visits instead of one for absolutely no legitimate medical reason. A masterstroke, sir.

I’d never seen an entire hospital floor-40 beds-dedicated to a single infectious disease before. At our peak we had more than three non-ICU units dedicated just to patients with COVID. Heated high flow and Bipap, usually exclusive to ICU, were standard on the floor because the ICUs were full.

I did verify that it was published well before Fourth Wing. M-Bot and Doomslug are helping.

Reading it got me ranting for a solid ten minutes to my youngest, which he appreciated because I was ranting about a book instead of sending him to bed.

Brandin Sanderson’s Skyward is giving me such hard Fourth Wing vibes. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not Fourth Wing (in that I don’t hate the main character with every fiber of my being) and it’s not stupid (people die because of bad guys, not because they don’t innately know how to ride a dragon).

Heh. The dinosaur ate the Crichton section of the library only.
“Well,” admitted Douglas the T. rex, “I only ate the ‘C’ section. Honestly—claiming that velociraptors were the smartest dinosaurs? I knew a velociraptor in college, and he failed chemistry. Plus, resurrecting a character just because he didn’t die in the movie? Poppycock, I say!”

I think the majority of AO3 would agree with this.
Authors write books for one, and only one, reason: because we like to torture people.

Head cannon: Alcatraz is Hoid’s origin story. (Everything is Cosmere. I’m 100% convinced the Rithmast is Cosmere. It has magic intricately tied to religion. You can’t convince me otherwise!)

Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians is off to a Lemony Snicket-type good time!
Everybody has a grandfather—two of them, actually. Just because you haven’t seen them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. In that way, grandfathers are kind of like kangaroos.

I do appreciate that in this dystopian timeline, where resources are scarce and communities are very segregated with little infrastructure, soda remains an important enough commodity that one of the leads can support a regular soda habit. These are my kind of priorities.

Our main character is not great with the similies.
They looked so dangerous, like alligators. Really fast alligators wearing black. Ninja alligators.

Did the Epics kill because Calamity chose—for whatever reason—only terrible people to gain powers? Or did they kill because such amazing power twisted a person, made them irresponsible?

Steelheart: I believe we got a snipet, or a glimpse, of this in the sci-fi short story collection. I don’t watch The Boys because it is too grim. This prologue is gutting. Will I white knuckle through? Or give up before the end?

Clone Wars: Aksoka was everything I hoped the Padme character would be (including very cool and not boring). Rex and all the clones. A few of the plot lines went off the deep end, but those four episodes absolutely give me chills.

Doctor Who, Tom Baker through Matt Smith are the ones I watched. The old episode where the aliens started as larva, but it was just some guy wrapped up in green spray-painted bubble wrap is a classic.

Rusting storms. I was not into this story for a while, and then the ending grabbed me by the throat. It deserves every penny of the Kickstarter. Sanderson is back on my “can do no wrong“ list, despite Elantris. It was lovely.

Hoid, you’re pretending we are a Rosharan audience. We have no idea what this means.
The darkness was strangely transparent to her. (And she didn’t even have to burn tin.)

I love how these stories go all in on fantasy, and then make a hard left turn into science fiction (yeah, yeah, it’s all a spectrum, I get it, but let me enjoy it).

Let this be a lesson. When you Awaken a device like this, be very, very careful what Commands you give it to follow.

AI can’t create art. Machines can’t create art.
Art is about intent, Yumi. A rainbow isn’t art, beautiful though it might be. Art is about creation. Human creation. A machine can lift way more than Tojin can—doesn’t make it less impressive when he lifts more than almost any human being.” He smiled at her. “I don’t care how well a machine piles rocks. The fact that you do it is what matters to me.”

Maybe they’re feruchemists!
Plants on Yumi’s world don’t really defy physics so much as they sneak past while physics is distracted by a nice drama on the viewer. Probably something involving pendulums. Physics loves those things.

I am choosing to read every (lowly) indicator as the appropriate variation of “fuck.” I’m not entirely sure that’s what Sanderson intends, but I am 100% certain Hoid is ok with this.

It took me a minute to get into this, because I was reading something else too, but Hoid is a spray-painted coatrack in this because he’s been frozen in time but is still aware and Design is putting him to use, and Hoid is just such an amazing character.

Anything to gainfully employ more musicians. It’s not that we’re unable to do anything else; it’s more that if you don’t find something productive for us to do, we’ll generally start asking questions like, “Hey, why aren’t they worshipping me?”

🫐mashithamel🍌 @rebeccamd.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
Hoid is narrating this specifically to a Rosharan, so all the analogies he makes make the most sense if you’ve read an additional, like, 5000 pages or somethibg.

I love how Painter is an angsty teenager who tries to imagine his life is more grim and tragic than it is.
As he did his rounds, he continued to imagine that he was some lone warrior. Instead of, essentially, an exterminator who had gone to art school.

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter: I was going to joke about how Yumi is clearly Rapunzel from Tangled, in how she‘s thinking about going to a festival she’s never been to before, but then it turns out she is forbidden from cutting her hair, and it’s not a joke any more.

Ending with Roshar. My heart will always be with Roshar, the world most heavily and deeply explored by the books. Plus, you know. Adolin. And Kaladin. The list could go on.
