Brazil is not the US. Current Brazilian political dynamics are very different from those of the US. You can't read anything across from one country to the other, either way.

Trump's continuing habit of issuing threats to all and sundry is, outside the US, is conveying, not power, strength and resolve, but insecurity and fear.

Under-appreciated, I think, is that the ideological ferment in US politics is undermining US political influence in especially the democratic world. 1) MAGA has already alienated most of the centre-right (and a lot of the democratic right) elsewhere; and, (contd:-)

At the beacon, on top of Kalk Bay peak, on Steenburg Plateau, within Metro Cape Town, Sunday 16 August. 5 hour 40+ minute, 7.3 km there-and-back hike with 262 m elevation gain (& then down again). I am still on a high from it!

Just an aside: one can, in principle, support Chris Nolan putting his own take on the Odyssey (Euripides, eg, put his own take on the myths -- see "The Trojan Women"), while also disliking, even rejecting, his take. There is no contradiction; the two positions are on different levels.

Belated 250th Birthday, USA! It is fortunate there is no secular equivalent to the religious ideas of the end-of-the-world, for Donald Trump is the anti-George Washington, rejecting everything GW embodied & embodying everything GW rejected. Otherwise many would fear the End Times were upon the US.

History has shown, far beyond any doubt, that, while warriors may win battles, they almost always lose wars. On the other hand, while soldiers may lose battles, they almost always win wars. But US SecDef Hegseth is ignorant of war & of the history of war. Warriors are undisciplined, by definition.

Trump is to the American Republic what Sulla was to the Roman Republic (disregarding Sulla's violence) -- the leader who claimed to be restoring the Republic, while wrecking it, by despising & disregarding the constitution. That's what I fear. Rome never fully recovered from Sulla's rule.

With Orban's crushing defeat in Hungary, will we see MAGA ideologues in the US adopt an ideology of MAGA*-in-one-country? (*National Conservatism/Christian Nationalism/whatever term they chose to use.)

As a Briton, I wonder if any of the hysteriacs who wanted the UK to join the Iran War & ranted that Starmer was humiliating the UK by keeping out, are now in any way abashed by the revelation of the Russian sub op off the UK & that what they wanted would have benefitted Putin.

Rebecca K Campbell @rebeccakcampbell.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Some are saying that Trump's bungled war against Iran has strengthened Putin. How? Putin has alienated the Gulf Arab states. The war has created an unprecedented alignment between Ukraine & the Gulf Arab states. It seems to me that Russia comes out of this weaker, while Ukraine comes out stronger.

As a woman, I cannot help but point out that the white male he-man lethality-focused macho anti-woke (in practice, anti-woman, anti-African-American) Pentagon that Hegseth created, through his purges, has fallen flat on its collective face in its first test, against Iran.

Regarding terrorism worldwide: I have seen a repost of an argument that there is a difference between a neo-nazi murdering Jewish people & a "pro-Palestine" leftist murdering Jewish people. There is no difference. They are equally racist, equally evil.

While naval specialists have long known it, the current Hormuz fiasco has brought to general attention the weird fact that, despite being by far the largest Western navy, the US Navy is not a full-spectrum navy, suffering from woefully inadequate MCM capability & having no specialised ASW escorts.

Macron's deployment of nearly the entire French fleet to the E Med & Arabian Sea is as irrational as Trump's attack on Iran: neither has a clear nor achievable political objective. As others have noted, it will take the French Navy "off-the-board" as far as deterring Russia, for a significant time.

Although I am no fan of UK PM Starmer, or the Labour Party, I cannot but feel that he is, given Trump's record of betraying allies & friends, right to keep the UK out of offensive operations against Iran, & stick with purely defensive missions. That this annoys Trump is irrelevant.

‘We don’t have infantry’: Ukraine’s war machine evolves into machine war
Outmanned by a nuclear power in the largest land war in Europe since 1945, Ukraine’s front line is increasingly held by machines.

Recent events show that, in classical terms, the UK is a (de facto) republic and the US is an (elective) monarchy.

The person formerly known as Prince Andrew has been arrested by UK police, regarding the Epstein scandal. Yet in the US, there has still not been a single arrest of a prominent &/or powerful figure. Impunity rules in the US & damage to the country's image is huge. (Epstein engulfs both Dems & GOP.)

The fundamental roots of European, & wider Western, civilisation are Greco-Roman Judeo-Christian. Oddly, many (most?) Americans who like to pontificate upon the subject of Western civilisation seem to forget the Greco-Roman part. Despite the US having a Senate!

It's a fascinating insight into cultural differences that, so far, all the powerful or prominent people who have "gone down in flames" following the latest release of Epstein documents have been in Europe. Of the many rich & prominent Americans mentioned, none yet has suffered any consequences.

I don't usually comment on internal politics, but what is going on in the US is certainly discrediting the 2nd Amendment. It obviously doesn't guarantee American freedoms & invoking it would only give a callous admin (regime?) the excuse it is looking for to invoke the Insurrection Act.

Republican Rome was an inspiration for the American republic. But, somehow, over the past ±50 years, America has slid into an Imperial form of govt, disguised until now by the Augustan prudence of its monarchs. But now the US has its first self-indulgent egotistical Emperor & the secret is out!

The news that the Swedish Armed Forces are going to acquire synthetic aperture radars from Finland's ICEYE is great! This is exactly the kind of concrete programme that shows that European countries are moving to reduce their dependence on the US, that we should look out for, rather than speeches.

I have been very struck by the fact that all-but-one of the posts I have seen on this platform about Trump's "Donroe Doctrine", whether pro- or anti-, completely ignores South America, except, sometimes, Colombia. (I could not access the exception, as I am not a subscriber to War on the Rocks.)

So, a quick bit of research confirms that France has both optical & sigint spy satellites (3 each, it seems). But no radar satellites. To repeat, the UK has a programme to deploy optical (1 now in orbit) & radar satellites. But will London now accelerate this programme? Let's hope so.

France & the UK have now both said that they stand with Denmark (& Greenland) against Trump's threats. But is there anything they (& others) could do to actively deter a US attack? Could/should they send troops? The numbers need not be great. Even a platoon each would carry heavy political weight.

Those criticising European countries about their muted responses to Trump's Venezuela strike have to remember that by far the top priority for the Europeans is the defence of Ukraine, & that keeping the US onside is still very important for that. Less important than it was, but not yet unneeded.

1. Recently, I posted that those who sought a big blow-up between European leaders & President Trump were looking for the wrong thing in the wrong place, & that it was in the areas of policies, programmes & projects that they should be looking, for evidence of European self-assertion.

My "warm" take on the Trump-class "battleships" (BBGs, as they are being classified). They make sense only in terms of an anti-access/area denial strategy. An AA/AD strategy would be completely in line with VP Vance-led MAGA isolationism & with Trump's great powers spheres-of-interest mindset.

On 21/12/25 in the "Sunday Telegraph", one of the UK's most conservative mainstream columnists, Simon Heffer, has penned an eviscerating attack on Donald Trump & asserted that the US can no longer be regarded as the leader of the free world. This is a very significant attitude shift towards the US.

I have a suspicion that "civilisational erasure" is actually the objective for Trump/MAGA when it comes to Western Europe. Western Europe's liberal, & therefore tolerant & inclusive, democracy, simply by existing, is an ideological threat to MAGA's narrow-minded, conformist & intolerant vision.

1. Some European analysts are complaining that key national leaders in Europe are not responding vocally to President Trump's provocations. But this seems unreasonable to me. Increasing autonomy from the US is, in practice, a complex task. Trump can do a lot of damage to Euopean defence, still.

I am taking Trump's decision to authorise the export of Nvidia H200 chips to China to confirm that he has no intention whatsoever to confront Beijing, & that the next iteration of the NSS will betray Asian democracies just like the recently released one has betrayed European democracies.

Despite Trump's fulminations & threats, the G20 leaders meeting in South Africa have issued a "G20 Leaders Declaration". Most of it is waffle of course (these things usually are) but the fact it was issued is a pretty striking illustration of the decline of US influence in the world, under Trump.

I see that the leaders of the European powers, Japan, & Canada, plus the EU, have issued a joint statement that diplomatically (doesn't insult Trump) but clearly states that the proposed US-Russia "peace" plan is unacceptable, without (a lot of) reworking.
010
Rebecca K Campbell @rebeccakcampbell.bsky.social · 22/11/2025
The "peace" plan that Trump is pushing Ukraine to accept is, if the reports about it are accurate, an appalling betrayal. The UK, France, Germany and the rest of Europe must show steadfast support for Ukraine & make it clear that Kyiv will have their support if the plan is rejected.
