Third installment of my PhD just dropped! 📄🏝️🍄‍🟫 I surveyed Dirk Hartog Island for fungi to learn what’s on the menu for reintroduced bettongs and the habitats they’re likely to prefer😋🍽️ Beyond survival, we also get a sneak peek into the ecosystem restoration potential that the critters might bring

Is There Mush-room for Bettongs on Dirk Hartog Island? Environmental DNA Assessment of Food Resource Availability for Fauna Translocations - Ecosystems
Conservation translocations require careful assessment of dietary resources to ensure population viability. Here, we used environmental DNA metabarcoding to characterise fungal assemblages across thre...

The amazing @rebeccajquah.bsky.social had another PhD chapter published. This study examines two keystone mycophagous marsupials the boodie and woylie. Bec used DNA metabarcoding to work out what they were eating. Her work inform translocations. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

A whirlwind week! On Wed, I had the privilege of presenting 2 PhD chapters at WA’s Biodiversity Conference! These looked at the fungal diets of boodies and woylies across a landscape gradient, and an eDNA survey of fungi on Dirk Hartog Island, a recent/future translocation site for these bettongs.

This wee rascal has gone untrappable for 2 years!! Well done to @rebeccajquah.bsky.social and Holly (MSc student) who caught her this morning. Aptly named Mojo Jojo, she is a very special mouse. MJ is allowing us to monitor the build a new mound-burrow system - literally from the ground up!

Prior to #ESAus2024, I had a go at making polymer clay earrings for the first time. They’re potoroos in case you can’t tell🫣 But they’ve got nothing on some of the home made/sewn outfits others were rocking! Petition to have a workshop on DIY #ecologicalfashion at future ecological conferences!
