THIRTY-THREE THOUSAND FROM FIVE FISH
The River Torridge is one of the main catchments where our Northern Devon Natural
Solutions project has focussed its work.
So it's very encouraging to hear of the success of a local initiative which is boosting salmon populations in the river. Volunteers from the Torridge Rivers Association have established a hatchery where they are now raising young fish which in coming years should help salmon recover after decades of falling numbers.
Last December five adult female salmon, known as hens, were caught during their migration up the river. Their fertilised eggs were then stored in tanks and left to develop. One of the greatest obstacles to successful salmon spawning and egg hatching is the absence of clean unpolluted river water and clean gravels free from a covering of sediment. The tanks provided the ideal conditions - largely free of pollution and with predators absent. In January the eggs began to hatch and the baby fish, known as alevin, were fed and allowed to grow.
Then in spring came the moment of release. Volunteers were able to put out a grand total of 33.000 young salmon into areas of the river where the conditions are known to be most favourable.
In a few years - all going well - some of these fish will make their journey to the sea where they will mature, before returning as adults to their 'home' river, the Torridge.
There they will breed and begin the lifecycle once more.

Every year I feel sad about summer's passing And every year I fall in love with autumn all over again

Ah, West Wales. Clear skies, endless beaches, squeaky choughs and oystercatchers and buzzards

Working in comms & social media can make it extra challenging to have a long stretch offline, but in the tenth year of my business I’ve got the process down. So this is me signing off for the year. Catch you ~6 Jan, 2025!

On my second migraine in six days. Wishing back the calm and sunny skies and the time to walk beneath them.

I struggle to leave the house sometimes, so have started scheduling things for earlier in the morning. 8am haircut got me walking the streets of Exeter as the sun rose. A good decision.

Still thinking about how awesome last weekend was at the Digital Marketing Union retreat. Some of the best minds across SEO, content, PPC, e-commerce, webdev, advertising, link building. And what was extra lovely is that most discussions had nothing to do with marketing. We just hung out.

I so rarely find myself on Exeter’s high street but was pleasantly surprised this evening by how sparkly and light it was

The tree is up. Earliest ever. No regrets, never delay joy, etc

Me too, I’d love to know how they work it out! That Japan approach is interesting. It’d be a dilemma for people who can’t afford driveways, but do need a car. I’d also love to see more guidance around suitability of cars for city centres. These two are so unnecessarily large!

I’m usually a stickler for restricting anything Christmassy to December, but this year I’ve already happily indulged in lebkuchen, sparkly nail varnish and, today, the jumper ✨

I cannot explain how happy the snow in Exeter made me feel today. Spent hours just wandering around, watching birds, photographing leaves, enjoying the sun on my face and the crunch beneath my boots.

Hugely grateful to our Devon Wildlife Trust membership for re-electing me as a trustee. I'm excited to see what I can get done in this final year! Thank you @roseoneill.bsky.social for a fascinating talk following the formal business 💚
