Another day, another conservative freakout over nothing. Here in Iowa 60% of corn is used to make ethanol motor fuel. Using solar and wind (and battery storage) to power EVs could be done in a small fraction of that land.

And ironically, I’m a Jew who used to work for an Egyptian slu… property management company whose name changed multiple times for unclear reasons. If a politician thinks housing issues are a result of the greedy <insert group name here>, they’ll fail their constituents.

A relative lives in a senior building and often complains about “kids on bikes not watching where they’re going” (both e- and not). We were driving back from brunch and a car was straying onto our side of the driveway. The relative just shrugged and said, “Well, it is a senior building.”

Not sure how IA-01 is a tossup when it’s a rematch of 2024, in which Miller-Meeks won by 1/4%. I have to imagine the national environment would be expected to move more votes to the dem than that.

To use completely arbitrary numbers, becoming rich would add 20 happiness points, but a lifetime of debt would subtract 100, so I’m taking option 1

After the price increase, I switched to Mint Mobile to save around $50/month. Mint is owned by… Tmobile. Makes a lot of sense.

The idea that youth sports, which if you're serious about it means thousands of dollars a year in hotels, club dues, equipment, etc. for a remote chance at a scholarship, is a practical way to pay for college is just absurd.

Having some experience with bureaucratic decision-making, I feel like this idea would get nixed when someone said, “Don’t we have a process to ensure that our drivers speak the local language adequately? Are you saying that process doesn’t work?”

The way people think the most tenuous connection gives you the right to criticize others’ choices is wild. A relative loves to badmouth the state of the front yard of a house they sold a decade ago. Why? Well, they left behind some perfectly functional lawn equipment, so they oughta…

And if an apartment doesn’t have a modern HVAC system, it probably also doesn’t have a modern electrical system. Meaning that an efficient portable AC unit may be the difference between cooling the apartment and tripping the circuit breaker.

The analogy that comes to mind is laundry. What’s most convenient is having a washer and dryer in your apartment (charger in your garage stall). A shared facility for the whole apartment building works fine. And having to go to a laundromat (fast charger) is an option, but not a great one.

I heard another potential juror asked what verdict they would reach right now (before the trial started). “Guilty.” “Why is that?” “Well, the cops must have had a reason to arrest him.” She was dismissed.

I mean, the roundabout near my work also has priority for pedestrians and cyclists. Maybe 1/4 of cars stop. Serious question: how does your country get drivers to follow traffic laws?
A roundabout in Iowa, USA. Like the Dutch roundabout, it also has markings that indicate priority for pedestrians and cyclists, but they aren't as easily visible.

I bought a new computer, and it (Frameworks desktop running Windows 11) would only recognize my ancient Brother laser printer as an unknown USB device. Bought a new bottom-tier printer and paid $20 more than advertised because the sale was online-only. At least the ink subscription was optional.

To the “Harris would have gone to war with Iran, too” folks: There’s nothing safer or lazier than declaring that both sides are equally bad. Nobody ever lost their job by saying that. Biden signed a nuclear agreement with Iran. Trump withdrew from it.

If Julie Le was defending Stephen Miller from criminal charges, I’d agree with you. Even the worst criminal deserves a good legal defense. My sympathy completely evaporates when the client is a government carrying out a lawless campaign of ethnic cleansing.
