I think the trend may cool, but the underlying appeal probably survives. Mundane tasks become satisfying in games because they have clear boundaries and visible completion in a way real life often doesn’t. The genre wrapping around that can change without the appeal disappearing.

After spending all that time simulating an absurdly complicated physical world, Caves of Qud finally becoming an actual physical object feels strangely appropriate.

‘You are a tiny dog, the llamas are magical, the wool problem is getting out of hand’ is an alarmingly efficient video game pitch. I already understand both the problem and my responsibilities. 😂

Eleven previously missing titles turning up in one month is incredible. Preservation work keeps proving that ‘lost’ often really means ‘sitting somewhere nobody has checked yet.

I like seeing post-launch devlogs that pull back the curtain on the people behind the finished game. Voice performances can become such a defining part of a character that it’s easy to forget how many choices went into getting there. Thank you for sharing.

A wild horse is such an unusual RPG protagonist that the mechanics immediately become more interesting. ‘Fight or flight’ means something very different when flight is actually one of the character’s natural strengths.

Tools are the giant invisible part of game development players almost never see. Sometimes the most impressive thing behind a five-second effect is the editor somebody built so creating it didn’t take five hours every time.

That’s one of those gaming achievements that matters way more than anything a platform could put on your profile. First co-op clear with your kid is a keeper.

It stops being feature creep once you put it in the design document early enough. Then it’s just ✨vision✨. 😂

There’s a nice milestone hidden in that decision too. Being able to say ‘this helped when the project was smaller, but it’s no longer the best use of my time’ means the project itself has moved into a different stage.

There’s something uniquely satisfying about going back years later and finally beating the game that stopped you when you were younger. That’s not just clearing a backlog entry, that’s settling an old score. 😂

Making electricity something the player has to maintain is a good horror pressure system. The lights aren’t just atmosphere anymore. Suddenly keeping the environment functional is part of staying alive.

There’s something especially satisfying about a narrative mystery getting a physical edition. A game built around clues, places and atmosphere feels like exactly the kind of thing that deserves an object on the shelf afterward.

Point-and-click games are especially interesting visually because every screen had to function as both a place and a puzzle interface. So much composition, readability and atmosphere had to coexist in a single static scene. King's Quest V anyone?

The school computer lab was basically an unofficial game-distribution platform for an entire generation (we started it). 😂 If one kid figured out how to install something, the whole room somehow had it by Friday. Those days were adventurous.

Making acquisition something you have to earn through the battle itself sounds much more interesting than just reducing HP and throwing the equivalent of a ball. It turns collecting into another combat objective.

A score was always an aggressive compression of an opinion, but a headline can do the same thing before the reader even reaches the opinion. Once the summary becomes more important than the argument, a lot of nuance is already gone.

There may be no better warning label for Kingdom Hearts than a game title that already requires an explanation before you’ve even started discussing the plot. 😂
000
Realm Creation Studios @realmcreationstudios.com · 3h
Exactly. At that point the systems are effectively generating objectives instead of the designer prescribing them. The game doesn’t need to tell you that you’ve won if it keeps giving you reasons to say ‘okay, but now I want to try this.'

Good correction. You’re right. The interesting part of the recovered files is really the surviving original production material behind the design, rather than revealing an appearance nobody had seen before.

That’s the key distinction for me: replayability works best when the second run isn’t asking me to repeat the first one to reach different content. If the variables start changing what I investigate, suspect or prioritize immediately, the replay itself becomes the new experience.
010
Realm Creation Studios @realmcreationstudios.com · 5h
That somehow makes it even better. 😂 ‘I have mathematically verified that victory exists; unfortunately I personally cannot reach it’ is an excellent relationship to have with your own game.

That rental-era economics angle explains so much about old difficulty. If you only have enough content for a couple hours, making those couple hours capable of destroying a child for three straight weekends suddenly becomes a business model. I know, I experienced it! 🤣

Realm Creation Studios @realmcreationstudios.com · 22h
Multiple possible culprits across timelines is a really interesting way to make replayability part of the fiction instead of just asking the player to replay the same mystery for completion percentage.

Realm Creation Studios @realmcreationstudios.com · 22h
I don’t think an open-ended game necessarily needs a victory condition if its systems are good at generating player-created goals. The harder problem is probably giving a new player enough direction to start forming those goals without accidentally turning that direction into ‘the objective.’

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes preservation so fascinating. An old floppy that could easily have been discarded turns out to contain surviving evidence of what an unreleased piece of hardware was actually supposed to look like.

I like the idea that questioning people isn’t just how you uncover the mystery. Your questions can also affect what happens to them. That makes dialogue simultaneously investigation and consequence.

An elf with guns’ already works as a pitch, and then somehow ‘cyberpunk-fantasy survival horror dungeon crawler’ makes it even stranger. I respect a game that refuses to choose just one shelf at the store.

Shipping a game before its own creator has managed to beat it might be the purest possible game-jam energy. 😂

Procedural world generation always seems to become a question of how much freedom you give the generator before the world stops feeling intentionally designed. Getting that authored/procedural balance right is half the fascinating part.

That’s awesome to see. One of the nice things about a history-focused show is that the back catalog doesn’t really expire. Every new listener potentially discovers years of work instead of just the newest episode.

Nearly 100 reviews in the first month is no small milestone for an indie release. That BIG HUNDO is close enough now that it would be extremely rude of the universe not to give it to you. 😂

Ultra 64 might be the most aggressively 1990s console name Nintendo never actually shipped. 😂 Seeing it in Killer Instinct still feels like looking into the timeline where they committed to it.

I miss secrets with instructions that sound completely fabricated. 😂 ‘Enter and leave the options screen exactly 27 times’ is precisely the sort of thing your friend would tell you at school and you’d spend the evening proving them wrong.

I like fast travel much more when the world actually explains it. A place like a Teleport Glade turns what could just be a menu convenience into another piece of the setting.

Little Nemo has one of those mechanics that immediately makes sense to a kid (I knew it at the time, miss that game): give animal candy, become friends, acquire ridiculous new ability... and then surrounds it with difficulty that absolutely does not care that you are a kid. 😂

F-Zero GX really is one of those weird perfect collisions of Nintendo’s idea of F-Zero meeting SEGA’s arcade-racing instincts. And unfortunately ‘small but mighty’ is probably the financially responsible way to collect GameCube now. 😂

Yes. Historical context can be an invisible part of the original design. You can reproduce the mechanics and presentation perfectly, but the player in 2026 has already experienced thirty years of games descended from those ideas. You can preserve the game; you can’t completely preserve the surprise.

That’s a really clean progression chain because each quest creates the reason to learn the next system. By the time they’ve forged that first item, they’ve learned mining, smelting and smithing without the game ever needing to stop and give them a tutorial lecture.

There’s an important difference between accepting feedback and putting the entire identity of a project up for referendum. Some feedback helps you execute your intent better; some is really just asking you to have different intent.

This is huge for game-history research. Japanese magazines preserve so much contemporary context that gets lost when we only look backward through the games themselves - advertising, previews, interviews, expectations, even what people thought mattered at the time.

That’s an impressively strange cross-section of game history for one issue. Java games sitting beside WipEout, Cinemaware and the GX4000 is exactly the kind of mix that makes retrospective coverage interesting.

I like quests most when they work that way, not just as a checklist, but as a quiet teaching layer. Give the player a reason to visit a place or try a system, reward them for doing it, and they’ve learned the world without needing a tutorial box.

A rule can survive for decades even while every other part of the presentation changes, until people know the mechanic without ever knowing where it started. I love this!

"My recording failed so I started over and didn’t mind” might actually be one of the strongest accidental endorsements a game can get. 😂 If replaying the opening immediately still feels good, something is working.

Eternal Darkness is a good example of a game being willing to mess with the player rather than just the character. The sanity ideas make the game itself feel slightly untrustworthy, which is a fantastic trick for horror.

You can recreate an era incredibly faithfully and still have to ask whether you preserved what made those games compelling or also preserved the parts we were happy to leave behind.

Realm Creation Studios @realmcreationstudios.com · 25/09/2026
Absolutely. Developer cheats aren’t really “cheats” at that point, they’re test infrastructure. If reaching the thing you need to test takes twenty minutes, you’ve created friction against testing it thoroughly. I have about a hundred different "one-step" selections I use in my debug screen.
