do you want to know what i've been doing? i made a clever script to scan my colorscheme for the palette, then convert those into ANSI codes, then took some rust code and applied the ANSI codes to resemble the syntax highlighting. i am going to add a check for term width so it doesn't add blank lines
a screenshot of a neovim window alongside a terminal window. the terminal window shows some very pretty looking rust code, and the nvim window shows the same, but much more ugly, with a bunch of variables representing colors mixed in.

"noooooo, go away space face"
another screenshot from that episode. there's a guy in a space suit with a distorted face, who seems to be fighting off another distorted face, which is just floating around.

also i remember this episode of x files, which for some reason my parents let me watch. btw the caption for this reads 'The episode was derided by one critic for its "pretty decidedly unscary" graphics.'

oh ok maybe AI can create art
a comment by a claude-powered mod on r/ClaudAI. the post reads

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 800 comments.

Looks like OP struck a major nerve. The consensus in this thread is a resounding "YES, this is our life now and it's soul-crushing." The pity party is in full swing, and here's the gist:

The Death of Pride: The biggest complaint is the complete loss of any "sense of victory" or satisfaction. Since everyone assumes Claude did the work, there's no pride in shipping, even if you engineered it. It's just... business as usual.

The Rise of the Meat Proxy: You're not an engineer anymore, you're an "organic vessel designed to press enter." Or, as one user so poetically put it, you're just a condom between Claude and your production server getting fucked. Your only real job is to be the warm body they can blame when the AI slop inevitably breaks.

It's a Management Problem: A strong counter-argument is that this is a culture and management failure, not an AI failure. Good teams use AI as a powerful tool but still require a human to be responsible, understand the output, and do the actual thinking. Bad management just sees "code go brrr" and demands more, creating a "slopacalypse" of tech debt.

Consulting is a Sham: A lot of consultants are chiming in, saying their job is now just using AI to generate reports for clients who use AI to read them. It's an endless loop of AI talking to AI.

So yeah, most of you feel like a background character in a sci-fi dystopia, while a handful of you are either thriving by using AI responsibly or are just really excited to watch the whole thing burn.

honestly just fuck off gemini. nobody likes you. (i googled it and this was the only result, aside from the wikipedia entry for 'love')
a screenshot of gemini results for the quote which reads "sowing my teeth back into my head" is a painful, clever twist on the famous 1989 song 'sowing the seeds of love' by the band tears for fears. it sounds like you had a nasty dental accident or a brutal experience at the dentist. then a header "why the quote fits" with bullet points 1) the original song: it is a bright, upbeat pop tune about peace, love and growing positive things. 2) your version: it swaps the happy gardening metaphor for a violent, shocking image of jaw trauma 3) the contrast: the massive gap between a cheesy 80s synth pop chorus and losing your teeth makes the dark humor work. gemini then goes on to ask if i had a sports injury or a bad dental visit before asking if i need emergency care.

i used kmonad to bind a new keyboard layer to space, to hopefully make my keyboard a little more ergonomic for rust. there is a 250ms hold time which just writing this makes me think it was a bad idea that i will reverse soon.
a crude ascii representation of a keyboard with underscores for a lot of the keys. on the top row i've replaced all the keys with numbers, and on the home row i've added punctuation that's used a lot in rust, like the ampersand for borrows, brackets, all that stuff.

can you believe i used to be terrified of using closures? now i'm using them as a crutch! i'm pretty sure i know how to improve this.. i mean, a few come to mind just looking at it, but my brain is fried. it's hot and i haven't really woke up yet.
some awful rust code, which was written under the philosophy "first make it work". the function basically iterates over a vec and collects elements that match a search term, but then it checks if the new vec is exactly one element, then iterates over that to see if the element matches some other condition. it's not my finest hour but i had only been up an hour after writing it.

it's a screen shot from a film but that's the point i don't know. in this shot, the guy is sat sort of half smiling, in a dimly lit room. he's wearing a denim jacket and a shirt. his hair is longish, covering his ears, like a ramone on his day off.

let's play "who said this" was it a tory govt in 2012 or a labour govt in 2026 spoiler this exact quote? it's the latter.
The system inherited from the previous Government encouraged more people to stay on benefits without support to move into work.

Reforms coming into force today will change that, tackling perverse incentives by introducing a lower Universal Credit health element rate of £217.26 per month for new claimants, compared to the higher rate of £429.80.

i started using a formatter to make my code pretty (and i guess readable), but i guess i need to adjust something because, for eg...
a screenshot of some rust code, it's the same thing but twice - a variable assigned to the return of a function, with an "or else" closure running the same function on a different dir. the first one has the comment "i don't like formatters because they do stuff like this", where the line is broken after the equal sign, and "instead of something like this" where the line is broken evenly, just before the "or else" closure.

i have two rust projects open, 3 files from each. that's me actively trying to stress my memory out. usually i'd use bat to open up a file from a second project, because it would eat all of my memory and a big nibble on my swap. this is amazing. i love this.

an update on that project i'd given up on (i seem to get bursts of OOH I KNOW WHAT TO DO at 6am). i figured out how to print the logo and have the text next to it. it was actually the easiest problem of this entire project.
a screenshot of a neofetch clone that i've been working on while i learn rust. it prints out a bunch of information next to an ascii logo for the distro i'm running (endeavourOS). the layout is a bit bodged. there's a header and colour chart that look like they aren't related to the thing because of reasons described in the thread.

Chris @reallychris.bsky.social · 23/01/2026
i am plodding along with my neofetch clone. i managed to sort the padding out, and i made it so user can use their own colour blocks. the default is three spaces " " but in the config you can pass nerd font glyphs or even words.
a screenshot of my neofetch clone in written in rust. it shows some basic information because i've only set up a few modules. those are OS, kernel and DE. also i've set up a color chart. in the first run the 16 colors are displayed in two rows of rectangles, in the second, they are displayed by printing the word "cheese" in the different colours.

happy to report my second rust project is finished and actually quite useful (just as useful as the thing i was already using) (e is a function in my fish config to run nvim $argv if the file passes utf-8 check)
cli readout in a rust project's src folder. the first command is "e ~/wallpaper/4k-keyboard.jpg" which returns an error code 1 with "Can I Vim It: file isn't utf-8. the second command is "e main.rs" which successfully runs with the message "can i vim it: yes you can"

a front page of the observer i think, it's a black and white picture of starmer who is holding his right fist up in a barely convincing boxing gesture with the text "gloves off", and bullet points "the greens are nuts, reform is tearing us apart, rayner's coming back and i love the job" and "keir starmer tells rachel sylvester why he plans to fight on"

Chris @reallychris.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
i finished my first rust project! it does the thing, and nobody can take that away from me. oddly enough the thing that hurt most was getting String and &str mixed up pretty much every time i used either. compared with bash for fun. i'll really feel that extra 20ms eh.
command line readout for identical memory widgets. the first in a sensible language for such a use case, bash, and the second is in rust. both print out the exact pango-formatted string which is basically an icon and bar that represents the percentage used for both memory and swap. the bash one takes 29ms to run and the rust one is 5ms.

the guy standing up to talk at town meeting meme. it's a guy looking quite defiant standing up while everybody looks at him. i've put the previous post "'self' is the instance of rectangle" as the caption. no other context is given to explain what this means. and that's the way i would like things to remain at this time.

ok do you want some #UnixPorn? i don't usually show off because i'm usually quite function over form but for the first time ever i think i've managed to be both. i have two instances of vlc because i wanted to some cpu usage in the graph, but my potato barely makes a fuss. i love linux.
a screenshot of a floating window on my hyprland desktop. the terminal is showing the output of a fastfetch command, which is the endeavourOS logo and a bunch of info about my lenovo v15 laptop. the OS, linux kernel version (6.12), shell (fish) and other stuff like AMD ryzen 5 3500u cpu, 2.5gb out of 8gb ram used.the same, but it's a full screen window showing neovim, with a python project that looks actually quite clean and well written, which is unusual for me. specifically the code shows an if statement looking for a config file, and a couple of functions to assign key binds based on letters of the strings that are passed to them.

i looked it up, the planet i saw yesterday was jupiter, and the other planet wasn't a planet, it was probably pollux, which is my new favourite star. i ruled stars out because where i am stars rarely make it through when it's cloudy.
a screen shot of a website i'll link to in replies. it's a picture of the sky roughly 24 hours ago with the moon and a few bright dots around it, one of which is jupiter slighly lower than the moon and another is the star pollux off to the left. there's also a bit of information about pollux which is basically just wikipedia, which reads "Pollux is the brightest star in the constellation of Gemini. It has the Bayer designation β Geminorum, which is Latinised to Beta Geminorum and abbreviated Beta Gem or β Gem. This is an orange-hued, evolved red giant located at a distance of 34 light-years"

i finished my clever python colour scheme picker. it basically reads a dir for preset waybar themes i made, builds a colour chart with a function i'm really proud of, displays them in rofi and then applies the chosen one to everything. i won't use it, ever. i'm too used to "default"

a rofi menu showing a few color schemes, and in the background there's a neovim window showing some very shoddy python code, and a lower terminal pane showing the output of the script which is basically just a long list of pango mark up tags that define the colours in the list

oh ok fucking forget i mentioned it then
google search results for "why doesn't 'reckless' start with a w". the top result is a reddit post in r/etimology titled "why is it wreck, wrecked, and then reckless?". the gist of the answer is that reckless comes from the old verb reck, which means to take the head off something, so reckless is not related to wreck.
