There were 65 armed conflicts involving states in 2025, the most since WW2, according to the Uppsala Conflict Data Program. Around the Red Sea, peace deals in Yemen and Ethiopia are faltering, regional powers are competing for ports on both coasts and the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since February, while the US and Europe step back and foreign aid is cut.
